Sickle cell trait (SCT) has long been considered a benign carrier state with malarial protection, but carriers can be affected by increased venous thromboembolism, exercise-related injury, renal complications and very rarely a fatal renal malignancy. Renal medullary carcinoma is a very rare and aggressive renal tumor described almost exclusively in sickle cell trait. A review of the current literature provides clues to this link and describes trends expected in these cases.

Introduction The 2020 American Heart Association's (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) curriculum focuses on cardiac arrest resuscitation with one or two rescuers, providing only limited opportunities to develop higher-level skills such as leadership, communication, and debriefing. This mixed-methods pilot study evaluated whether supplementing the traditional Heartcode BLS course with a high-fidelity teamwork simulation session improved mastery of these higher-level skills. Methods Twenty-four first-year medical students completed the pilot training during sessions offered in February and May of 2023.

Thalamic neuromodulation has emerged as a treatment option for drug-resistant epilepsy (DRE) with widespread and/or undefined epileptogenic networks. While deep brain stimulation (DBS) and responsive neurostimulation (RNS) depth electrodes offer means for electrical stimulation of the thalamus in adult patients with DRE, the application of thalamic neuromodulation in pediatric epilepsy remains limited. To address this gap, the Neuromodulation Expert Collaborative was established within the Pediatric Epilepsy Research Consortium (PERC) Epilepsy Surgery Special Interest Group.

Cerebellar strokes have high morbidity and mortality due to bleeding or edema, leading to increased pressure in the posterior fossa. This retrospective cohort study analyzed three outcomes following a cerebellar stroke: in-hospital mortality, length of hospital stay, and total hospitalization costs. It uses data from the National Inpatient Sample (NIS) and aims to identify the predictors of outcomes in cerebellar stroke patients, including 464,324 patients, 18 years of age and older, hospitalized between 2010 and 2015 in US hospitals with cerebellar strokes.

Purpose Of Review: In this article, we underscore the importance of identifying risk factors and monitoring pulmonary hypertension patients for signs of arrhythmias, as this proactive approach can reduce morbidity and mortality.
Recent Findings: Atrial fibrillation is the most prevalent among cardiac arrhythmias and is associated with an increased risk of stroke, morbidity, and mortality. Smoking, obesity, hypertension, a sedentary lifestyle, and diabetes mellitus are some of the modifiable risk factors for atrial fibrillation.

Background: The estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and kinetic estimated glomerular filtration rate (KeGFR) have not been compared, with urinary measured creatinine clearance (mCrCl) or serum cystatin C (CysC) eGFR, soon after kidney transplantation (KTx) with prompt primary function. This study aims to compare post-KTx, urinary mCrCl, and eGFR CysC with eGFR and KeGFR.
Methods: Post-KTx, urine was collected every 12 hours from 25 of the 34 consenting subjects to calculate mCrCl and compare with Modification of Diet in Renal Disease (MDRD)-4, Jelliffe eGFR, Cockcroft-Gault creatinine clearance (CrCl), and KeGFR by Chen and Brater formulae.

Background: The advent of liquid biopsies presents a novel, minimally invasive methodology for the detection of disease biomarkers, offering a significant advantage over traditional biopsy techniques. Particularly, the analysis of cell-free RNA (cfRNA) has garnered interest due to its dynamic expression profiles and the capability to study various RNA species, including messenger RNA (mRNA) and long non-coding RNA (lncRNA). These attributes position cfRNA as a versatile biomarker with broad potential applications in clinical research and diagnostics.

Hyponatremia, though common in women with preeclampsia, has not been well studied. Our primary objectives are to assess the clinical characteristics and emergency therapy applied to subjects diagnosed with preeclampsia. We hypothesize that hyponatremia present in preeclamptic patients with severe features is associated with greater use of emergency hypertensives, antenatal steroids, and cesarean delivery.

As health care attempts to bridge the gap between evidence and practice, the concept of the learning health system (LHS) is becoming increasingly relevant. LHS integrates evidence with health systems data, driving health care quality and outcomes through updates in policy, practice, and care delivery. In addition, LHS research is becoming critically important as there are several initiatives underway to increase research capacity, expertise, and implementation, including attempts to stimulate increasing numbers of LHS researchers.

Humans naturally integrate signals from the olfactory and intranasal trigeminal systems. A tight interplay has been demonstrated between these two systems, and yet the neural circuitry mediating olfactory-trigeminal (OT) integration remains poorly understood. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), combined with psychophysics, this study investigated the neural mechanisms underlying OT integration.

Prolonged hospital stays can significantly impede patients' recovery, negatively affecting anything from physical health via issues like hospital-acquired infections and increased complications due to immobility to psychological health. Several studies investigated the psychosocial impact of prolonged hospital stays, revealing a variety of patient perspectives, such as feeling uncertain and frustrated about their conditions, which can erode their trust in healthcare providers. Delayed discharges not only affect patients but also have multifaceted effects on healthcare providers, potentially reducing physician efficiency and contributing to higher rates of burnout among healthcare professionals.
