Background: Ciliary neurotrophic factor (CNTF), mainly known for its neuroprotective properties, belongs to the IL-6 (interleukin-6) cytokine family. In contrast to IL-6, the effects of CNTF on the vasculature have not been explored. Here, we examined the role of CNTF in AngII (angiotensin II)-induced hypertension.

Background: There is higher prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) in burn patients after hospital discharge; however, the cause remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the lasting impacts of severe burns on the kidneys and to explore potential treatments.
Methods: The study examined the effects of burning on healthy mice and adenine-induced CKD mice.
Background: There is a lack of evidence regarding the association between plasma phenylacetylglutamine levels and lesion severity and clinical prognosis in patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) with multivessel coronary disease (MVCD). This study aims to investigate the potential of phenylacetylglutamine as a biomarker for major adverse cardiovascular events (MACEs) of patients with STEMI and MVCD.
Methods And Results: Clinical data and blood samples were collected from 631 patients with STEMI and MVCD, who underwent primary percutaneous coronary intervention.

Objectives: This study aims to explore the effect of improving clinical efficiency by replacing traditional impression workflow with centralized digital impression workflow.
Methods: The department of prosthodontics in Center of Stomatology, Peking University Shenzhen Hospital has improved the clinical workflow by replacing the traditional impression made by doctors using impression materials for each patient with a centralized digital impression made by one technician for all patients in the department. This cross-sectional study recorded the chairside time required for impression taking in patients undergoing single posterior zirconia full crown restoration before clinical process improvement; the time required for centralized digital impression production; the comfort level of patients; and the adjacency relationship, occlusal contact relationship, and time required for prostheses adjusting (i.

Fibrotic remodeling of nucleus pulposus (NP) leads to structural and mechanical anomalies of intervertebral discs that prone to degeneration, leading to low back pain incidence and disability. Emergence of fibroblastic cells in disc degeneration has been reported, yet their nature and origin remain elusive. In this study, we performed an integrative analysis of multiple single-cell RNA sequencing datasets to interrogate the cellular heterogeneity and fibroblast-like entities in degenerative human NP specimens.

Introduction: Novel fluid biomarkers for tracking neurodegeneration specific to Alzheimer's disease (AD) are greatly needed.
Methods: Using two independent well-characterized cohorts (n = 881 in total), we investigated the group differences in plasma N-terminal tau (NT1-tau) fragments across different AD stages and their association with cross-sectional and longitudinal amyloid beta (Aβ) plaques, tau tangles, brain atrophy, and cognitive decline.
Results: Plasma NT1-tau significantly increased in symptomatic AD and displayed positive associations with Aβ PET (positron emission tomography) and tau PET.

Bacterial skin diseases are a category of inflammatory skin conditions caused by bacterial infections, which impose a significant global disease burden. However, they have not been well assessed or predicted on a global scale. It is necessary to update the estimates and forecast future trends of the global burden of bacterial skin diseases to evaluate the impact of past healthcare policies and to provide guidance and information for new national and international healthcare strategies.

Introduction: Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) is one of the most common and significant complications of preterm birth. It ultimately leads to a decrease in the quality of life for preterm infants and impacts their long-term health. Early prediction and timely intervention are crucial to halting the development of BPD.

Given its significant impact on patients, caregivers and healthcare resources, preventing delirium in patients in the ICU is of paramount importance. This is the first randomised-controlled trial designed to evaluate the effects of a virtual reality-based sensory stimulation intervention on preventing delirium in ICU patients.

The dysfunction of the endothelial lining in lesion-prone areas of the arterial vasculature significantly contributes to the pathobiology of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. Recent studies suggested that UDP-glucose pyrophosphorylase 2 (UGP2) plays a role in cell proliferation and survival. This study investigates the anti-apoptotic and anti-atherogenic effects of UGP2 both in vitro and in vivo.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFOsteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative joint disease that affects the entire joint and has been a huge burden on the health care system worldwide. Although traditional therapy and targeted cartilage cell therapy have made significant progress in the treatment of OA and cartilage regeneration, there are still many problems. Mesenchymal stem cells from various tissues are the most studied cell type and have been used in preclinical and clinical studies of OA, because they are more widely available, have a greater capacity for in expansion, and have anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties compared to autologous chondrocytes.

Background: Preeclampsia is a major challenge for obstetricians due to its severe impacts on maternal and fetal health. Lysine lactylation (Kla) derived from lactate is a novel type of post-translational modification which has been confirmed to affect the malignant progression of diseases as an epigenetic modifier. However, the systemic lactylome profiling of preeclampsia is still unclear.

Aim: The aim of this systematic review is to present the pooled estimated prevalence and risk factors for cognitive impairment (CI) in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
Background: Patients with COPD suffer from progressive and irreversible airflow limitation, resulting in continuous impairment of lung function, which in addition to causing lesions in the lungs, often accrues to other organs as well. In recent years, a growing number of cross-sectional and longitudinal studies have shown that hypoxia is an important factor in causing CI and that there is an important link between them, but the assessment of co-morbid neurocognitive impairment and dysfunction is often overlooked.

Background: The rising incidence of kidney stones underscores the imperative to devise effective preventive measures. While a robust association between cardiovascular disease (CVD) and kidney stones exists, the current research landscape lacks investigations between cardiovascular health (CVH) and kidney stones. This study aims to explore the association between CVH, assessed by Life's Essential 8 (LE8), and kidney stones, with the role of blood lipids and insulin resistance in this relationship.

Previous studies on the correlation between serum selenium and hypertension have yielded inconsistent results. Our previous analysis of participants from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2011-2018 indicated that elevated serum selenium concentrations were associated with an increased risk of metabolic abnormalities in obese individuals, with the primary effect being on blood pressure in males. The aim of this study was to further elucidate the relationship between serum selenium and the risk of hypertension in obese males.
