November 2024

Department of Thoracic Surgery, Yancheng No. 1 People's Hospital, Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing University Medical School, The First People's Hospital of Yancheng, Yancheng 224000, Jiangsu Province, China.

Article Synopsis
  • The text discusses the role of tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) in enhancing the effectiveness of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) for treating colorectal cancer.
  • It highlights that while ICIs can activate immune responses against tumors, the effectiveness varies among patients based on the interactions between TAMs and the tumor environment.
  • By understanding and manipulating TAMs, researchers hope to overcome resistance to ICIs and improve treatment outcomes for colorectal cancer patients.

Center for Medical Research and Innovation, Shanghai Pudong Hospital & Department of Pharmaceutical Analysis, School of Pharmacy, Fudan University, Shanghai 201203, China; Innovative Center for New Drug Development of Immune Inflammatory Diseases, Fudan University, Shanghai 201203, China. Electronic address:

Exosomes, emerging as ideal non-invasive biomarkers for disease diagnosis and monitoring, have seldom been explored based on metabolite levels. In this study, we designed and synthesized a pH-responsive phase-transition bifunctional affinity nanopolymer (pH-BiAN) that could efficiently and homogeneously separate exosomes from urine. Specifically, poly-4-vinylpyridine (P4VP) was chosen as the pH-responsive polymer and simultaneously modified with two exosome-affinity components CD63 aptamer and distearoyl phosphoethanolamine (DSPE) through a one-step amide reaction at room temperature.

Background: To analyze the characteristics of blood metabolites within 24 h after birth in preterm infants with bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) and to identify biomarkers for predicting the occurrence of BPD.

Methods: Dried blood spots (DBS) were collected at birth from preterm infants with gestational age (GA) of less than 32 weeks in the cohort. The infants were divided into the BPD group and non-BPD group based on whether they eventually developed BPD.

Numerous studies have attempted to identify potential biomarkers for early detection of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) in preterm infants using metabolomics techniques. However, the presence of consistent evidence remains elusive. Our study aimed to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis to identify differences in small-molecule metabolites between BPD and non-BPD preterm infants.

Objective: Lung cancer, along with various other cancers, is characterized by increased glucose metabolism. The maximum standardized uptake value (SUVmax), derived from positron emission tomography-computed tomography (PET-CT), serves as an indicator of glucose metabolic activity in tumor lesions. This study aimed to evaluate the correlation between body mass index (BMI) and SUVmax in individuals with lung cancer.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to explore how a specific rim-like enhancement pattern seen on ultrasound affects the treatment success of microwave ablation in patients with colorectal liver metastasis (CRLM).
  • It involved analyzing data from 50 patients evaluated using contrast-enhanced ultrasound before undergoing microwave ablation, with radiologists categorizing the enhancement patterns.
  • Results showed that patients with the rim-like enhancement pattern had significantly higher rates of cancer progression post-ablation, indicating this pattern is a potential risk factor for treatment outcomes.

Purpose: We investigated whether homoharringtonine (HHT) added to venetoclax plus azacitidine (VA) could improve outcomes and counteract the negative effects of genetic patterns in patients with relapsed/refractory acute myeloid leukemia (RR-AML).

Experimental Design: A multicenter retrospective cohort study of the response and genetic patterns of response to the VA plus HHT (VAH) versus the VA regimens as salvage treatment in patients with RR-AML was performed. The endpoints were the rates of composite complete remission, measurable residual disease, event-free survival, overall survival, and relapse between VAH and VA groups.

Miniature Robots for Battling Bacterial Infection.

ACS Nano

November 2024

College of Chemistry and Environmental Engineering, Shenzhen University, Shenzhen 518055, P. R. China.

Micro/nanorobots have shown great promise for minimally invasive bacterial infection therapy. However, bacterial infections usually form biofilms inside the body by aggregation and adhesion, preventing antibiotic penetration and increasing the likelihood of recurrence. Moreover, a substantial portion of the infection happens in those hard-to-access regions, making delivery of antibiotics to infected sites or tissues difficult and exacerbating the challenge of addressing bacterial infections.

Local immunoinflammatory events instruct skeletal stem cells (SSCs) to repair/regenerate bone after injury, but mechanisms are incompletely understood. We hypothesized that specialized Tregs are necessary for bone repair and interact directly with SSCs through organ-specific messages. Both in human patients with bone fracture and a mouse model of bone injury, we identified a bone injury-responding Treg subpopulation with bone-repair capacity marked by CCR8.

Early diagnosis of liver cancer and appropriate treatment options are critical for obtaining a good prognosis. However, due to technical limitations, it is difficult to make an early and accurate diagnosis of liver cancer, and the traditional imaging model is relatively simple. Therefore, we synthesized multifunctional diagnostic/therapeutic nanoparticles, UMFNPs/Ce6@MBs, loaded with ultra-small manganese ferrite nanoparticles (UMFNPs) and chlorin e6 (Ce6).
