Department of Occupational and Environmental Health, School of Public Health, Peking University, Beijing100191, China Key Laboratory of Epidemiology of Major Diseases (Peking University), Ministry of Education, Beijing100191, China.

To assess the influence of extreme temperature events on the mortality risk of nervous system diseases in residents of Jiangsu Province and identify patients with nervous system diseases who are susceptible to extreme temperature events. Acase-crossover design was used to investigate the cumulative lagged effects of extreme temperature events on the mortality risk of nervous system disease in local residents by using the data on causes of death from nervous system diseases in Jiangsu from 2014 to 2020 with conditional logistic regression model. The final definition of extreme temperature events was established using Akaike information criterion.

Article Synopsis
  • The text discusses ongoing challenges in achieving health equity globally and specifically within China, highlighting significant health inequalities despite efforts to promote equity.
  • It employs various statistical methods to analyze health indicators like life expectancy and mortality rates across different provinces in China, revealing notable improvements but also persistent inter-regional disparities, particularly between the East and West.
  • The analysis indicates that while differences in health status are converging over time, socioeconomic factors play a critical role in influencing these health disparities, with inter-regional differences being the primary contributor to overall health inequality.

Article Synopsis
  • - Over 2.2 billion people worldwide experience vision impairment, and more than 1.5 billion have hearing impairment, which significantly impacts both individuals and society, prompting research into their relationship with cognitive impairment, dementia, and depression.
  • - Using data from two large studies (HRS and CHARLS), researchers found that increased levels of visual and hearing impairments are correlated with a higher risk of developing cognitive issues, dementia, and depressive symptoms among middle-aged and older adults.
  • - The study suggests a need for better access to sensory care to support the visual and auditory health of older adults, despite limitations like reliance on subjective assessments for diagnosing cognitive and emotional conditions.

Oil palm contributes to various global needs as one of the most productive oil crops, but there exist ongoing concerns regarding its yield reductions and associated environmental impacts resulting from land conversion. This is the first detailed report investigating the nonlinear threats to estate-level oil palm yields posed by El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) in the equatorial Pacific Ocean, a major driver of climate variability. Using the Malaysian Palm Oil Board administrative records on monthly performances reported by oil palm estates through the e-submissions portal spanning from January 2015 to June 2023, we focused on elucidating the impacts of ENSO on fresh fruit bunch yield, oil extraction rate, and oil yield.

El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) has been shown to relate to the epidemiology of childhood infectious diseases, but evidence for whether they increase child deaths is limited. Here, we investigate the impact of mothers' ENSO exposure during and prior to delivery on child mortality by constructing a retrospective cohort study in 38 low- and middle-income countries. We find that high levels of ENSO indices cumulated over 0-12 lagged months before delivery are associated with significant increases in risks of under-five mortality; with the hazard ratio ranging from 1.
