Background: The incidence of synchronous and metachronous multiple primary lung cancers (MPLCs) has been increasing recently. The new multidisciplinary classification of lung adenocarcinoma and TNM Classification of Lung Cancer (7(th) edition, 2009), have improved the understanding of MPLC. Most researchers recommend that surgical therapy should be actively pursued if the patient's physical condition and lung function permit it and if a complete cure can be achieved.

Neoadjuvant chemotherapy is being increasingly accepted as an effective treatment of resectable colorectal liver metastases (CRLM), but it may also damage the hepatic parenchyma. We performed a meta-analysis to compare the outcomes of patients who received neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NEO) prior to hepatic resection with hepatic resection without neoadjuvant chemotherapy (SG). Eligible trials were identified from Embase, PubMed, the Web of Science and the Cochrane library.

Background: Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutations, including a known exon 19 deletion (19 del) and exon 21 L858R point mutation (L858R mutation), are strong predictors of the response to EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitor (EGFR-TKI) treatment in lung adenocarcinoma. However, whether patients carrying EGFR 19 del and L858R mutations exhibit different responsiveness to EGFR-TKIs and what are the potential mechanism for this difference remain controversial. This study aimed to investigate the clinical outcomes of EGFR-TKI treatment in patients with EGFR 19 del and L858R mutations and explore the genetic heterogeneity of tumors with the two mutation subtypes.

This study aims to scan the 5'-upstream regulatory region of the p21 gene to identify all putative functional single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and to evaluate the contribution of p21 variants to oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) in the Chinese Han population. Common SNPs were identified, and both locus-based and haplotype-based association tests were used to evaluate the potential risk of these p21 gene polymorphisms for ESCC. Immunohistochemistry assay was further performed to detect the P21 protein expression in ESCC specimens.

The presentation, pathology, and prognosis of pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (PNETs) in Asian patients have not been studied in large cohorts. We hypothesized that the clinicopathological features of PNETs of Chinese patients might be different from those of US patients. The objectives of this study were to address whether PNETs in Chinese patients exhibit unique clinicopathological features and natural history, and can be graded and staged using the WHO/ENETS criteria.

As a genome guardian, p53 maintains genome stability by arresting cells for damage repair or inducing cell apoptosis to eliminate the damaged cells in stress response. Several nucleolar proteins stabilize p53 by interfering Mdm2-p53 interaction upon cellular stress, while other mechanisms by which nucleolar proteins activate p53 remain to be determined. Here, we identify NAT10 as a novel regulator for p53 activation.

Background: At present, there are two main types of lung cancer xenograft models: those derived from stable cell lines, and patient-derived xenograft models established by surgically resected tissues. However, these animal models may not reflect the biological and genetic characteristics of advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). We utilized bronchoscopy-guided biopsy tissues of NSCLC patients to establish xenograft models and analyzed their histopathologic and genotypic fidelity with parental tumors.

Aims: Metallothionein 2A (MT2A) and nuclear factor-kappaB (NF-κB) are both involved in carcinogenesis and cancer chemosensitivity. We previously showed decreased expression of MT2A and IκB-α in human gastric cancer (GC) associated with poor prognosis of GC patients. The present study investigated the effect of diallyl trisulfide (DATS), a garlic-derived compound, and docetaxel (DOC) on regulation of MT2A in relation to NF-κB in GC cells.

Both 5-methylcytosine (5mC) and its oxidized form 5-hydroxymethylcytosine (5hmC) have been proposed to be involved in tumorigenesis. Because the readout of the broadly used 5mC mapping method, bisulfite sequencing (BS-seq), is the sum of 5mC and 5hmC levels, the 5mC/5hmC patterns and relationship of these two modifications remain poorly understood. By profiling real 5mC (BS-seq corrected by Tet-assisted BS-seq, TAB-seq) and 5hmC (TAB-seq) levels simultaneously at single-nucleotide resolution, we here demonstrate that there is no global loss of 5mC in kidney tumors compared with matched normal tissues.

Background: Obesity has become a major health problem in contemporary society and it is closely related to many chronic diseases, so it is an important issue for measuring adiposity accurately and predicting its future. Prevention and treatment of overweight and obesity has become one of the key prevention and treatment of metabolic disorders.
Objective: In this study, we compared the ability of the four anthropometric indicators (body mass index, waist circumstance, waist-height ratio, waist-to-hip ratio) to identify metabolic disorders (hypertension, hyperlipidaemia, hyperglycemia and hyperuricemia) by receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analyses and to provide evidence for clinical practice.

Background: EGFR mutation is a strong predictor of efficacy of epidermal growth factor receptor tyrosine kinase inhibitor (EGFR-TKIs) therapy in advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). However, around 20-30 % of EGFR-mutated cases showed no response to EGFR-TKIs, suggesting that other determinants beyond EGFR mutation likely exist. This study analyzed the role of microRNAs (miRNAs) in primary resistance to EGFR-TKIs in advanced NSCLC patients with EGFR mutation.

To give an overview of contemporary experimental research using Chinese medicine (CM) for the treatment of cancer. As an integral part of mainstream medicine in the People's Republic of China, CM emphasizes improvements in holistic physical condition instead of merely killing tumor cells, which is consistent with the current medical model that advocates patient-oriented treatment. Great progress has been made in experimental research, and the principle aspects include anti-tumor angiogenesis, inducing apoptosis and differentiation, reversing multidrug resistance, and improving immune function.

Retinoblastoma protein (RB) plays critical roles in tumor suppression and is degraded through the proteasomal pathway. However, E3 ubiquitin ligases responsible for proteasome-mediated degradation of RB are largely unknown. Here we characterize a novel RB E3 ubiquitin ligase (NRBE3) that binds RB and promotes RB degradation.
