BMC Public Health

May 2024

Department of Cardiology, Kailuan General Hospital, No.57 Xinhua East Road, Tangshan, 063000, Hebei Province, China.

Background: The optimal multimorbidity measures for predicting disability trajectories are not universally agreed upon. We developed a multimorbidity index among middle-aged and older community-dwelling Chinese adults and compare its predictive ability of disability trajectories with other multimorbidity measures.

Methods: This study included 17,649 participants aged ≥50 years from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Survey 2011-2018.

Microsimulation model simulates individuals and estimates transition probabilities within the population using individual participant data. This approach could deal with the heterogeneous characteristics among the people or personal history of diseases and may be relevant in addressing cost-effectiveness problems of screening for complex conditions in epidemiology. This paper introduces the general principles, basic steps involved in implementation, analytic methods, and other related issues of the microsimulation model.

Purposes: We aimed to clarify the real-world status of breast cancer surgery and the cost in China.

Methods: This cross-sectional survey relied on data obtained from the hospitalization summary reports (HSRs) in 77 top-ranked (grade 3A) hospitals in China to analyze breast cancer patients who underwent surgery between January 2015 and December 2015. The surgery and cost were mainly evaluated.

Article Synopsis
  • This study focused on how different ways of measuring multimorbidity affect mortality rates in older Chinese adults.
  • Data was collected from over 13,000 participants aged 65 and older between 2002 and 2018, analyzing factors like condition counts and patterns.
  • It was found that those with multimorbidity had a higher risk of death, and trajectory-based measures were more effective for predicting mortality than simpler count or pattern measures.

[Predicting prolonged length of intensive care unit stay machine learning].

Beijing Da Xue Xue Bao Yi Xue Ban

December 2021

Advanced Institute of Information Technology, Peking University, Hangzhou 311200, China.

Objective: To construct length of intensive care unit (ICU) stay (LOS-ICU) prediction models for ICU patients, based on three machine learning models support vector machine (SVM), classification and regression tree (CART), and random forest (RF), and to compare the prediction perfor-mance of the three machine learning models with the customized simplified acute physiology score Ⅱ(SAPS-Ⅱ) model.

Methods: We used medical information mart for intensive care (MIMIC)-Ⅲ database for model development and validation. The primary outcome was prolonged LOS-ICU(pLOS-ICU), defined as longer than the third quartile of patients' LOS-ICU in the studied dataset.

Post-radical-hysterectomy (RH) patients suffer from a series of problems resulting from neurovascular injury, such as bladder dysfunction, which reduce their quality of life. We have designed this study to evaluate the efficacy of transcutaneous electrical stimulation (TENS) on patient rehabilitation after RH for early cervical cancer. A total of 97 patients were enrolled in a randomized-controlled trial (from January 2015 to December 2019) involving 7 medical centers nationwide.

Association of Longitudinal Patterns of Habitual Sleep Duration With Risk of Cardiovascular Events and All-Cause Mortality.

JAMA Netw Open

May 2020

National Institute on Drug Dependence and Beijing Key Laboratory of Drug Dependence, Peking University, Beijing, China.

Article Synopsis
  • The study explores the long-term patterns of self-reported sleep duration and their connection to cardiovascular events (CVEs) and overall mortality, highlighting that single self-reported measures may not fully capture the impact on health.
  • Participants included 52,599 Chinese adults, with sleep duration tracked over four years (2006-2010) to determine associations with CVEs and mortality between 2010-2017.
  • Four sleep duration trajectory patterns were identified: normal stable, normal decreasing, low increasing, and low stable, each indicating differing risks for health outcomes based on sleep duration changes over time.

Background: Health information exchange (HIE) is frequently cited as an important objective of health information technology investment because of its potential to improve quality, reduce cost, and increase patient satisfaction. In this paper we examine the status and practices of HIE in six countries, drawn from a range of higher and lower income regions.

Methods: For each of the countries represented - China, England, India, Scotland, Switzerland, and the United States - we describe the state of current practice of HIE with reference to two scenarios: transfer of care and referral.

Electronic address:

Aims: Evidence concerning the impact of ambient particulate matter (PM) on mental health is just emerging and inconsistent. Air pollution with high PM levels has been frequently reported in China, however, no Chinese study has determined the association between PM exposures and anxiety hospitalizations. We examined the potential association between PM concentrations and anxiety admissions in 26 Chinese cities from January 2014 to December 2015.

Ambient fine particulate matter is associated with increased emergency ambulance dispatches for psychiatric emergencies.

Environ Res

October 2019

Peking University Medical Informatics Center, Peking University, Beijing, 100191, China. Electronic address:

Aims: As a top ambient pollutant in urban area, fine particulate matter (PM) has been associated with the occurrence and deterioration of many medical conditions, while limited studies have observed the association with psychiatric conditions. This study aimed to investigate the association between short-term PM exposure and psychiatric emergency events, and further explored the variation by age, sex and seasonal patterns, which have been suggested to be associated with both psychiatric risk and pollutant toxicity.

Methods: We used time-series analysis to investigate the association between short-term exposure of PM and emergency ambulance dispatches for psychiatric emergencies (EPE) (n = 158634) in Beijing, one of the top polluted cities in China during the study period between 2008 and 2014.

There is little evidence that acute exposure to fine particulate matter (PM) impacts the rate of hospitalization for congestive heart failure (CHF) in developing countries. The primary purpose of the present retrospective study was to evaluate the short-term association between ambient PM and hospitalization for CHF in Beijing, China. A total of 15,256 hospital admissions for CHF from January 2010 to June 2012 were identified from Beijing Medical Claim Data for Employees and a time-series design with generalized additive Poisson model was used to assess the obtained data.
