The approval of Epidiolex, an anti-epileptic drug containing cannabidiol (CBD) as its active component, has brought hope to patients with refractory epilepsy. However, the anti-seizure effect of full-spectrum hemp extract (HE), a CBD-enriched hemp oil, remains unclear. In this study, we investigated the anti-seizure effect of HE using drug-induced seizure models.

Research on geographic and socioeconomic disparities of NO attributed mortality burden is limited. This study aims to quantify the geographic and socioeconomic differences in the association between long-term exposure to NO and mortality burden in China. We estimated the all-cause mortality burden of adults over 16 years old attributable to NO exposure above 10 µg/m for 231 Chinese cities from 2015 to 2019, and geographic and socioeconomic differences .

Objective: Despite smoking being a significant risk factor in the occurrence and progression of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), no comprehensive analysis has been conducted to determine the potential benefits of smoking cessation for patients with established COPD or identify specific indicators that may be improved. The aim of our meta-analysis was to elucidate the positive impact of smoking cessation on COPD.
Methods: We conducted a comprehensive search of PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, CNKI, Wan Fang and VIP databases to identify studies that met our eligibility criteria from inception up to 1, May 2024.

The interception of blood-borne bacteria in the liver defines the outcomes of invasive bacterial infections, but the mechanisms of this antibacterial immunity are not fully understood. This study shows that natural antibodies (nAbs) to capsules enable liver macrophage Kupffer cells (KCs) to rapidly capture and kill blood-borne encapsulated bacteria in mice. Affinity pulldown with serotype-10A capsular polysaccharides (CPS10A) of Streptococcus pneumoniae (Spn10A) led to the identification of CPS10A-binding nAbs in serum.

Liver metastasis is the primary factor contributing to unfavorable prognosis in colorectal cancer (CRC). Although N-glycosylation is implicated in metastasis, there is a notable paucity of comprehensive studies addressing the N-glycosylation proteomics associated with liver metastasis in CRC. In this study, N-glycosylated proteins and N-glycosylation sites of differential expression between primary lesions and paired liver metastatic lesions are identified.

Three-dimensional structured illumination microscopy (3D-SIM) provides excellent optical sectioning and doubles the resolution in all dimensions compared with wide-field microscopy. However, its much lower axial resolution results in blurred fine details in that direction and overall image distortion. Here we present 4Pi-SIM, a substantial revamp of IS that synergizes 3D-SIM with interferometric microscopy to achieve isotropic optical resolution through interference in both the illumination and detection wavefronts.

Safeguarding replication fork stability in transcriptionally active regions is crucial for precise DNA replication and mutation prevention. Here, we discover the pervasive existence of replication fork-associated RNA-DNA hybrids (RF-RDs) in transcriptionally active regions of human cells. These hybrids function as protective barriers, preventing DNA2-mediated nascent DNA degradation and replication fork collapse under replication stress.

With a multitude of HCC mouse models available, choosing the one that most closely resembles human HCC can be challenging. This study addresses this gap by conducting a comprehensive transcriptomic similarity analysis of widely used HCC mouse models. In this study, RNA-seq was performed on a model induced by double knockout of P53 and Pten via CRISPR/Cas9 in HBV-transgenic mice.

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) poses a serious threat to both public health and animal food safety, thereby highlighting the demands for rapid, sensitive, and easy-to-use detection. This study aimed to develop a One-Pot assay using CRISPR/Cas13a for detecting HEV RNA, suitable for point-of-care testing (POCT) in resource-limited settings. CRISPR/Cas13a combined with reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and reverse transcription recombinase-aided amplification (RT-RAA) was applied to a One-Pot assay device.

Background: Several nutrients have been found to be associated with the prevalence of myopia, and the role of dietary patterns in influencing myopia risk has recently garnered significant attention. We aim to explore the relationship between the Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII) and refractive status in adolescents.
Methods: Data from 7,331 participants were analyzed from the 2005-2008 US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES).

Significance: A data-based calibration method with enhanced depolarization contrast in polarization-sensitive optical coherence tomography (PS-OCT) was developed and demonstrated effective for detecting melanin content in the eye.
Aim: We aim to mitigate the dependence between the measured depolarization metric and the intensity signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for improved visualization of depolarizing tissues, especially in low SNR regions, and to demonstrate the enhanced depolarization contrast to evaluate melanin presence.
Approach: A function for calibrating the depolarization metric was experimentally derived from the young albino guinea pig, assuming depolarization free in the retina.

Endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) plays a crucial role in the treatment of abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) in the clinic, but the aneurysm remains in the patient's body after surgery, continuing to pose a risk of progression. Cycloastragenol (CAG) is proven to be an effective anti-AAA drug, and its vascular protective effects can be further improved when the hydrophobic CAG is encapsulated into nano-sized formulations to enhance its bioavailability. In this context, this study developed an extravascular patch hydrogel loaded with CAG nanostructured lipid carriers and a hydrophilic drug of doxycycline hydrochloride (DOX).

Mammals suffer permanent hearing impairment from the loss of auditory hair cells due to their inability to regenerate. In contrast, lower vertebrates exhibit extraordinary capacity for hair cell regeneration and hearing restoration, but the mechanisms remain unclear. Here we characterize the single-cell atlas of Xenopus laevis inner ear and perform a comprehensive comparison with mouse model.

Postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) is common in the aged population and associated with poor clinical outcomes. Irisin, an endogenous molecule that mediates the beneficial effects of exercise, has shown neuroprotective potential in several models of neurological diseases. Here we show that preoperative serum level of irisin is reduced in dementia patients over the age of 70.

Periodontitis, an infectious disease of periodontal tissues caused by oral bacterial biofilms, is characterized by reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation and immune microenvironment imbalance. Multifunctional nanozymes, leveraging their physiochemical properties and enzymatic activities, offer promising antibacterial and anti-inflammatory strategies for managing periodontitis. In particular, Prussian blue nanozymes (PBzymes) exhibit exceptional ROS control due to their robust catalytic activity, diverse antioxidant functions, and high biocompatibility.
