Article Synopsis
  • - Vision is crucial for animal survival, and different vertebrate species have evolved their visual systems based on their environments and habitats.
  • - The giant panda has a unique vertically oriented visual streak and forward-facing eyes, indicating it has a specially adapted binocular visual system.
  • - Mathematical simulations support the idea that the panda processes visual information differently, which could help us understand its visual adaptation and evolution as a distinct species.

Purpose: To investigate the potential causal associations between the use of sun/ultraviolet (UV) protection and ease of skin tanning and the risk of pseudoexfoliation glaucoma (PXG) in European populations.

Methods: Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with the use of sun/UV protection and ease of skin tanning were selected from the UK Biobank genome-wide association study database consisting of 498,751 European participants. SNPs of PXG were obtained from the FinnGen study including 3424 PXG cases and 326,434 controls.

TFOS Lifestyle: Impact of lifestyle challenges on the ocular surface.

Ocul Surf

April 2023

Department of Ophthalmology, New Zealand National Eye Centre, The University of Auckland, Auckland, New Zealand.

Many factors in the domains of mental, physical, and social health have been associated with various ocular surface diseases, with most of the focus centered on aspects of dry eye disease (DED). Regarding mental health factors, several cross-sectional studies have noted associations between depression and anxiety, and medications used to treat these disorders, and DED symptoms. Sleep disorders (both involving quality and quantity of sleep) have also been associated with DED symptoms.

Article Synopsis
  • Severe eye injuries that cause no light perception usually mean a bad chance of seeing again, and doctors might need to remove the eye.
  • New surgical techniques have made it better for patients with these serious injuries, but there are still no clear rules on when and how to perform the surgery.
  • To help, experts created guidelines with 16 recommendations to improve how doctors diagnose and treat these severe eye injuries.

Alcohol addiction often compromises vision by impairing the visual pathway, particularly the retina and optic nerve. Vision decline in alcoholics consists of a sequential transition from reversible functional deterioration of the visual pathway to irreversible clinical vision degeneration or vision loss. Thus, the control of alcoholic vision decline should focus on prevention before permanent damage occurs.

With the compiling studies on the autoimmune pathogenesis in the developing of Sjögren's syndrome, the functional importance of T follicular helper cells (Tfh) and T follicular regulatory cells (Tfr) was investigated, including our recent findings, among which various techniques for detecting Tfh and Tfr cells in Sjögren's syndrome have been reported. In this chapter, we describe detailed methods for the effective detection of Tfh and Tfr cells in mice with experimental Sjögren's syndrome (ESS), a mouse model with evident salivary hypofunction, increased serum levels of autoantibodies, and histopathological changes in the salivary glands. We provide representative detections of surface markers, cytokines, and transcription factors of Tfh and Tfr cells by flow cytometry and ELISpot assay.

Background: Anti-VEGF agent ranibizumab has been extensively used as a standard treatment for wet AMD. We investigated whether traditional Chinese medicine could serve as a complementary therapy for this disease.

Methods: 144 patients with neovascular age-related macular degeneration received either intravitreal ranibizumab treatment as needed plus placebo or intravitreal ranibizumab treatment as needed plus an FDA approved traditional Chinese patent medicine named ZQMT.

Backgrounds: To evaluate the response of persistent ground glass nodules (GGNs) in patients with lung adenocarcinoma treated with platinum-based chemotherapy on computed tomography (CT).

Methods: We retrospectively studied patients with GGNs that met the following criteria: (I) GGNs found in patients with lung adenocarcinoma, which persist for more than 3 months; (II) patients treated with platinum-based (cisplatin or carboplatin) chemotherapy for at least 2 cycles; (III) ground glass proportion ¡Ý50%. For each patient, if more than two CTs satisfied the inclusion criteria, then the baseline and last CTs were used for analysis, defined as CT1 and CT2.

Background: Descemet's stripping automated endothelial keratoplasty (DSAEK) surgery offers a more standardized approach and reliable method to create corneal grafts with an instrument such as a microkeratome. With the development of Descemet's membrane endothelial keratoplasty, an excellent clinical outcome is seen in the treatment of corneal endothelial dysfunctions, which indicates that thinner corneal graft results in better clinical outcome. With the recent development of the femtosecond laser, ultrathin corneal graft preparation has become possible.

In the article, the development of medical treatment for eye injuries in the mainland of China was reviewed. According to the data provided in Eye Injury Vitrectomy Study (EIVS), 27% of 72 eyes with no light perception (NLP) gained recovery in term of antomy and visual function. Vitrectomy initiated at more than 4 weeks after open eye injury is an independent risk factor for developing PVR.

Purpose: To report the results and complications of scleral buckling for the treatment of rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) using 25-gauge chandelier endoillumination.

Methods: A total of 61 patients (61 eyes) with RRD were treated with scleral buckling. For the sclera buckling procedure, a 25-gauge chandelier was inserted through the pars plana for intra-ocular illumination, and retinal tears were identified and treated with episcleral cryotherapy under surgical microscope.

Dose response and time course of manganese-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging for visual pathway tracing in vivo.

Neural Regen Res

July 2016

Department of Ophthalmology, Beijing Tsinghua Changgung Hospital, Tsinghua University Medical Center, Beijing, China; Peking University Eye Center, Peking University Third Hospital, Key Laboratory of Vision Loss and Restoration, Ministry of Education, Beijing, China.

Axonal tracing is useful for detecting optic nerve injury and regeneration, but many commonly used methods cannot be used to observe axoplasmic flow and synaptic transmission in vivo. Manganese (Mn(2+))-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MEMRI) can be used for in vivo longitudinal tracing of the visual pathway. Here, we explored the dose response and time course of an intravitreal injection of MnCl2 for tracing the visual pathway in rabbits in vivo using MEMRI.

T-helper1/T-helper2 cytokine imbalance in the iris of patients with glaucoma.

PLoS One

March 2016

Department of Ophthalmology, Peking University Third Hospital, Peking University Eye Center, Beijing, China.

The mechanistic study of glaucoma pathogenesis has shifted to seeking to understand the effects of immune responses on retinal ganglion cell damage and protection. Cytokines mediate the biological effects of the immune system, and our previous study revealed an imbalance of T-helper (Th) 1-derived and Th2-derived cytokines in the serum of patients with glaucoma. In this study, we collected irises from normal individuals and patients with primary open-angle closure (POAG) or chronic angle-closure glaucoma (CACG).
