Portal vein tumor thrombus (PVTT) is very common and it plays a major role in the prognosis and clinical staging of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). We have published the first version of the guideline in 2016 and revised in 2018. Over the past several years, many new evidences for the treatment of PVTT become available, especially for the advent of new targeted drugs and immune checkpoint inhibitors which have further improved the prognosis of PVTT.

Untargeted metabolomics reveals the role of AQP9 in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease in a mice model.

Int J Biol Macromol

October 2022

Department of Human Anatomy and Histology and Embryology, School of Basic Medical Sciences, Peking University Health Science Center, Beijing 100191, China. Electronic address:

Previous studies have shown that AQP9 plays an important role in energy metabolism in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Recently, metabolomic analyses were used to determine the slight changes in metabolic profiles and helped to understand the disease progression, therapeutic intervention of NAFLD. A mouse model of NAFLD was established with a high-fat diet (HFD), and Aqp9 knockout mice were constructed.

Article Synopsis
  • Microwell arrays are useful for creating uniform tumor spheroids for cancer drug screening, but traditional culture plates limit oxygen supply, affecting spheroid viability.
  • A new device made from polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) allows better oxygen flow, resulting in larger and healthier hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) spheroids with improved growth and lower cell death.
  • Spheroids grown in PDMS also show increased resistance to the cancer drug doxorubicin and enhanced angiogenesis, making them a better model for studying early-stage HCC and drug testing.

Time-restricted feeding (TRF), a feasible form of intermittent fasting, has been proven to benefit metabolic health in animal models and humans. TRF restricts the daily feeding window to 3 to 12 h for eating ad libitum, with fasting for the rest of the day. To our knowledge, specific guidance on the appropriate time period for eating during TRF has not yet been promoted.

Purpose: Thyroid hormone withdrawal (THW) inevitably induced hypothyroidism in patients with differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC), and we aimed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of a novel recombinant human thyroid-stimulating hormone (rhTSH, ZGrhTSH) as an alternative of THW in China.

Methods: Totally, 64 DTC patients were enrolled with 24 in the dose-escalation cohort equally grouped into 0.9 mg × 1 day, 0.

Antitumour effects of apatinib in progressive, metastatic differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC).

Endocrine

October 2022

Division of Nuclear Medicine, Department of Biomedical Imaging and Image-guided Therapy, Medical University of Vienna, Vienna, Austria.

Purpose: Management of progressive, metastatic radioactive iodine refractory differentiated thyroid cancer (RAIR-DTC) has been a great challenge due to its poor prognosis and limited treatment options. Recently, apatinib, an orally anti-angiogenic tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) is reported to be useful for treatment of progressive RAIR-DIC. The aim of this study was to evaluate the antitumour effect of apatinib and the combination therapy with radioactive iodine (RAI) in patients with progressive metastatic DTC.

June 2022

Beijing Key Laboratory of Molecular Targeted Diagnosis and Therapy in Nuclear Medicine, Department of Nuclear Medicine, Peking Union Medical College Peking Union Medical College (PUMC) Hospital, Chinese Academy of Medical Science and Peking Union Medical College (PUMC), Beijing, China.

Background: This is a pilot study of radiomics based on Ga-NOTA-PRGD2 [NOTA-PEG4-E[c(RGDfK)]2)] and F-FDG PET/CT to (i) evaluate the diagnostic efficacy of radiomics features of Ga-NOTA-PRGD2 PET in the differential diagnosis of benign and malignant pulmonary space-occupying lesions and (ii) compare the diagnostic efficacy of multi-modality and multi-probe images.

Methods: We utilized a dataset of 48 patients who participated in Ga-NOTA-PRGD2 PET/CT and F-FDG PET/CT clinical trials to extract image features and evaluate their diagnostic efficacy in the differentiation of benign and malignant lesions by the Mann-Whitney U test. After feature selection with sequential forward selection, random forest models were developed with tenfold cross-validation.

Background: Associating liver partition and portal vein ligation for staged hepatectomy (ALPPS) has become increasingly popular during the past few decades, and its indications have extended from patients with normal liver to post-chemotherapy patients and even patients with cirrhosis. However, few studies have assessed the publications in relation to ALPPS.

Methods: Web of Science was searched to identify studies related to ALPPS published from 2012 to 2021.

Chinese expert consensus on conversion therapy for hepatocellular carcinoma (2021 edition).

Hepatobiliary Surg Nutr

April 2022

Department of Liver Surgery and Transplantation, Liver Cancer Institute, Zhongshan Hospital, Fudan University, Shanghai, China.

Recent advances in systemic and locoregional treatments for patients with unresectable or advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) have resulted in improved response rates. This has provided an opportunity for selected patients with initially unresectable HCC to achieve adequate tumor downstaging to undergo surgical resection, a 'conversion therapy' strategy. However, conversion therapy is a new approach to the treatment of HCC and its practice and treatment protocols are still being developed.

Department of Liver Surgery, Peking Union Medical College (PUMC) Hospital, PUMC & Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, Beijing, China.

Time-restricted feeding (TRF) improves metabolic health. Both early TRF (eTRF, food intake restricted to the early part of the day) and mid-day TRF (mTRF, food intake restricted to the middle of the day) have been shown to have metabolic benefits. However, the two regimens have yet to be thoroughly compared.

Endocr Pract

March 2022

Department of Nuclear Medicine, Peking Union Medical College (PUMC) Hospital, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and PUMC, Beijing, China; Beijing Key Laboratory of Molecular Targeted Diagnosis and Therapy in Nuclear Medicine, Beijing, China. Electronic address:

Objective: To assess the impact of serine/threonine-protein kinase B-Raf (BRAF) V600E and telomerase reverse transcriptase (TERT) promoter mutations in patients with distant-metastatic differentiated thyroid cancer (DM-DTC) based on thyroglobulin (Tg) response to radioactive iodine (RAI) therapy.

Methods: The BRAF and TERT mutations in primary tumors or metastatic lymph nodes of 114 patients with DM-DTC were retrospectively examined. RAI avidity was evaluated using a posttreatment iodine-131 whole-body scan.

The albumin-to-γ-glutamyltransferase ratio (AGR), a novel inflammation-related index, has been reported to have prognostic importance in several malignancies but not yet in gallbladder cancer (GBC). This study intended to assess the prognostic value of AGR in GBC and to develop a nomogram based on AGR for predicting overall survival (OS) in GBC patients after surgery. Medical records of 140 qualified GBC patients between July 2003 and June 2017 were retrospectively analyzed.
