Introduction: Neurological defects in children with cerebral palsy (CP) not only affect their motor skills but also lead to bladder and bowel problems. Although most children with CP have achieved urinary control, more than 50% of cases experience lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS). Common LUTS complaints observed in CP include delayed toilet training, urinary incontinence, increased frequency of urination, urgency, urinary hesitancy, and recurrent urinary tract infections.

Classic bladder exstrophy represents the most severe end of all human congenital anomalies of the kidney and urinary tract and is associated with bladder cancer susceptibility. Previous genetic studies identified one locus to be involved in classic bladder exstrophy, but were limited to a restrict number of cohort. Here we show the largest classic bladder exstrophy genome-wide association analysis to date where we identify eight genome-wide significant loci, seven of which are novel.

Previously genome-wide association methods in patients with classic bladder exstrophy (CBE) found association with ISL1, a master control gene expressed in pericloacal mesenchyme. This study sought to further explore the genetics in a larger set of patients following-up on the most promising genomic regions previously reported. Genotypes of 12 markers obtained from 268 CBE patients of Australian, British, German Italian, Spanish and Swedish origin and 1,354 ethnically matched controls and from 92 CBE case-parent trios from North America were analysed.

Purpose: Premature delivery is a major complication of in utero myelomeningocele repair. The prematurity rate in MOMS (Management of Myelomeningocele Study) was 79%, with a mean gestational age at birth of 34 weeks. We speculated that prematurity could also influence urological outcome in patients operated on prenatally for myelomeningocele.

Background: The bladder exstrophy-epispadias complex (BEEC) represents the severe end of the congenital uro-rectal malformation spectrum. Initial studies have implicated rare copy number variations (CNVs), including recurrent duplications of chromosomal region 22q11.21, in BEEC etiology.

Aims: Frequency Volume Charts (FVC) are recommended for the evaluation of enuretic patients. Although this is a good instrument for the assessment of functional bladder capacity, it is known that patient compliance could introduce problems. Therefore, we assessed whether uroflowmetry and post-void residual volume could replace FVC recordings in specific cases, by comparing the bladder capacity as measured by FVC or uroflowmetry.

Aims: To determine the ability of Peristeen® transanal irrigation system to reduce symptoms of neurogenic bowel dysfunction (NBD) in patients using the validated neurogenic bowel dysfunction scoring system for the pediatric population.
Methods: Patients 3-21 years with NBD whose current bowel program was unsuccessful were given the Neurogenic Bowel Dysfunction (NBoDS) score sheet before initiating Peristeen®, and at 2 weeks, 2 months, and 6 months after. All patients were started on Peristeen® with tap water (20 ml/kg) per daily irrigation.

Aims: Reference values of Frequency Volume Chart (FVC) and uroflowmetry parameters for adolescent and adult enuresis patients are lacking. In this study, we aim to describe those parameters, in order to interpret findings from FVCs and uroflowmetries in those patients.
Methods: Retrospective, descriptive cohort study, concerning 907 patients aged 11 years and older, suffering from enuresis of at least one wet night per fortnight, treated in a secondary/tertiary centre, between 2003 and 2013.

Bladder exstrophy-epispadias complex (BEEC), the severe end of the urorectal malformation spectrum, has a profound impact on continence as well as sexual and renal functions. It is widely accepted that for the majority of cases the genetic basis appears to be multifactorial. Here, we report the first study which utilizes genome-wide association methods to analyze a cohort comprising patients presenting the most common BEEC form, classic bladder exstrophy (CBE), to identify common variation associated with risk for isolated CBE.

Objectives: To assess the results of secondary endopyelotomies (SEP) that were performed in our center in children who had earlier failed pyeloplasty.
Methods: Eleven secondary endopyelotomies were done between 2005 and 2010 in 10 patients (5 boys and 5 girls, mean age 6.8 years), with a follow-up time of >6 months.

A rabbit model was used for the evaluation of a collagen-based biomatrix of small intestinal submucosa (SIS, COOK) in comparison to a biochemically reconstructed biomatrix for bladder tissue regeneration. Rabbits underwent partial cystectomy and cystoplasty with SIS patch graft or with a biochemically defined collagen biomatrix. The grafts of the regenerated bladder wall were harvested at different intervals and tissue regeneration was evaluated.

Primary splenic tumors in children are rare and usually benign. We report the case of a 7-year-old boy with a splenic mass that initially resembled an infectious process. Histopathologic examination of a specimen obtained using sonographically guided Tru-cut needle biopsy, performed after angiography, revealed an inflammatory pseudotumor of the spleen, an extremely rare benign lesion.

Laser tissue welding is a relatively new technique, which was initially described only about 30 years ago. Over the past 10 years, the implementation of protein solders has redefined the field. Alternative methods of wound closure and of tissue approximation have been quickly accepted in clinical medicine.

A foreign body in the bladder is a well-recognized, although rare, cause of urinary tract infections. We describe a 15-year-old girl who presented with abdominal pain and recurrent urinary tract infections. On analysis, a forceps was found, with the two legs of the instrument separately perforating both the back wall of the bladder and the trigone, with the top of the forceps lying in the vagina, covered with a large calculus.

Objective: Current medical therapy for congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) attributable to a complete 21-hydroxylase deficiency is not optimal. Difficulties in adequate adrenal androgen suppression are common, causing short adult stature, infertility, and hyperandrogenism. We report the use of laparoscopic bilateral adrenalectomy as a definitive therapy for this condition and argue that it is superior to conventional medical therapy in selected patients.

Purpose: Laparoscopic techniques have enabled less invasive surgery in pediatric urology. We report our experience with laparoscopic nephrectomy, nephroureterectomy and heminephroureterectomy in 26 children, and evaluate our series to establish the safety and efficacy of such procedures for benign disease.
Materials And Methods: Laparoscopic procedures were done in 15 girls and 11 boys 4 months to 11 years old (mean age 37) during a 23-month period.

Laparoscopy has been recognized as the modality of choice for the treatment of many diseases in urology, gynecology, and general surgery. Although laparoscopy is minimally invasive, the most frequent complications are associated with entry through the abdominal wall. The Hasson (open) technique was developed to minimize the complications by entering the abdomen under direct vision.

We present a rare complication causing severe infravesical obstruction after hypospadias repair after an initially successful double-faced island flap repair. The obstruction was caused by partial dissection of the epithelium of the urethral wall, comparable to intima dissection in an aortic aneurysm. To our knowledge, this type of urethral obstruction after a hypospadias repair has not been reported before.
