Drug Extravasation in a Tertiary Referral Children Hospital: A Prospective Cohort Study.

Extravasation injuries are prevalent in pediatric hospitals and often result in tissue damage and extended hospital stays. However, limited data exist regarding risk factors for extravasation in children. This study aimed to identify these risk factors in pediatric patients receiving intravenous (IV) therapy.

Eleven years of experience with endoscopic and open surgery for craniosynostosis and risk factors for undesirable outcome.

Objective: This study reports the authors' experience with surgical interventions for nonsyndromic craniosynostosis. They assessed open surgery and minimally invasive endoscopic suturectomy in terms of periprocedural outcomes and related risk factors for postoperative complications and reoperation. This study aimed to provide insights toward surgical approach decisions and lay the groundwork for future prospective studies in this field.

Prevalence of traditional atherosclerotic risk factors in newly diagnosed colorectal and breast cancer patients.

Due to the shared risk factors between cardiovascular disease (CVD) and certain cancers such as breast cancer (BC) and colorectal cancer (CRC), our study aimed to assess the CVD risk factors among newly diagnosed patients with BC and CRC. The study utilized baseline data from the ongoing Cardiovascular Events in Breast and Colorectal Cancers (CIBC) cohort study conducted in Isfahan since 2019. Only patients who had recently been diagnosed with BC or CRC and had not undergone any treatment were included in the study.

Cardiovascular Complications in Children Post COVID-19: A Systematic Review.

Cardiovascular involvements are one of the most important and threatening problems of SARS-CoV-2 infection and can cause a wide range of clinical manifestations in children. Therefore, a review of previous studies is necessary to prevent the occurrence of cardiovascular complications and reduce the risk of mortality in this age group of patients. To investigate the cardiovascular complications in children with COVID-19, international authoritative databases including PubMed, Scopus, Embase, Web of Science, Google Scholar, and Persian databases were searched using the main concepts, all articles were published between January 2020 and November 2022.

Randomized Trial of Pulsatile and Nonpulsatile Flow in Cyanotic and Acyanotic Congenital Heart Surgery.

Background: The study objective was to determine the impact of cardiopulmonary bypass perfusion modalities on cerebral hemodynamics and clinical outcomes in congenital cardiac surgery patients stratified by acyanotic versus cyanotic heart disease.

Methods: A total of 159 pediatric (age <18 years) cardiac surgery patients were prospectively randomized to pulsatile or nonpulsatile cardiopulmonary bypass and stratified by type of congenital heart disease: acyanotic versus cyanotic. Intraoperative cerebral gaseous microemboli counts and middle cerebral artery pulsatility index were assessed.

Background: Nursing students' safe medication administration is a crucial aspect of ensuring patient safety. Clinical simulation is a novel teaching method applied to reduce factors threatening medication safety in the education of nursing students. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to conduct a review study in this field.

Preliminary Results of Iran Premature Coronary Artery Disease (IPAD study) and Implementation of IPAD Biobank: A Case-Control Study.

Background: Iran Premature Coronary Artery Disease (IPAD) is one of the first and largest studies of its kind in Asia that investigates different aspects of premature coronary artery disease (PCAD) in different ethnic groups in multiple cities. In this paper, we aim to describe the IPAD biobank establishment and present some preliminary results of the IPAD study.

Methods: This case-control study was conducted on patients with documented angiography from different ethnicities in more than ten cities of Iran (males aged 60 years and below and females aged 70 years and below).

The 18 International Conference on Pediatric Mechanical Circulatory Support Systems and Pediatric Cardiopulmonary Perfusion was held in Milwaukee, WI, USA, on May 9 and 10, 2024. The conference was hosted by the Herma Heart Institute of Children's Wisconsin at the Pfister Hotel in downtown Milwaukee. This communication provides the highlights of the proceedings.

Breaking the taboo of using the nursing process: lived experiences of nursing students and faculty members.

Background: Despite the numerous advantages of the nursing process, nursing students often struggle with utilizing this model. Therefore, studies suggest innovative teaching methods to address this issue. Teaching based on real clinical cases is considered a collaborative learning method that enhances students' active learning for the development of critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Effects of balloon pulmonary valvuloplasty on longitudinal changes in right ventricular strain and strain rate in pediatric pulmonary stenosis.

Background: Balloon Pulmonary Valvuloplasty (BPV) is a procedure for Pulmonary Stenosis (PS) treatment. In this study, right ventricle (RV) performance was determined through 2D-Speckle Tracking Echocardiography (2D-STE).

Methods: The study involved 25 diagnosed children with PS undergoing BPV and 25 normal children.

Background: There is a high mortality rate in cyanotic patients with congenital heart disease (CHD) due to cardiovascular complications. The cardiovascular prognosis is negatively affected by endothelium dysfunction, increased arterial stiffness, and impaired vascular system. This study aimed to determine carotid intimal mean thickness (CIMT) and flow-mediated dilatation (FMD) in a group of children with cyanotic CHD (CCHD).

Quantification and Correlation Analysis of Species with Diabetes-Related Amino Acids in Individuals with Prediabetes and Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus.

The relationship between gut microbiota and diabetes-related amino acids significantly impacts insulin resistance and obesity. We aimed to quantify two species and their correlation with branched-chain amino acids, aromatic amino acids, and glutamate in prediabetes (preDM) and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Fecal samples were collected from 68 participants, including 21 with T2DM, 23 with preDM, and 24 with normal glycemic tolerance (NGT).

Echocardiographic estimation of pulmonary arterial and right atrial pressures in children with congenital heart disease: a comprehensive prospective study and introduction of novel equations.

Background: Pediatric pulmonary hypertension (PH) is characterized by a mean pulmonary arterial pressure exceeding 20 mmHg. There is limited research on the suitability of adult-based methods for estimating PH in pediatric populations. Using established formulas for adults, this study aimed to evaluate the correlation between echocardiographic estimates of systolic, diastolic, and mean pulmonary arterial pressures, and mean right atrial pressures in children with congenital heart disease (CHD).

The Impact of Self-Care Recommendations with and without Tilt-Training on Quality of Life in Children and Adolescents with Vasovagal Syncope: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

Background: Syncope is among the most common paroxysmal disorders in children and adolescents. Vasovagal syncope is the most common syncope in children and adolescents. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of self-care recommendations with and without tilt training on the Quality of Life (QoL) of children and adolescents with syncope.

The association between soft drinks consumption and risk of mental disorders among Iranian adults: The LIPOKAP study.

Objective: With rising demand for soft drinks (SDs) in low-income countries, studies examining mental disorders in relation to SDs are rather scarce. Therefore, we aimed to explore this association in a sample of Iranian adults.

Methods: This cross-sectional study was carried out within the framework of the multi-centric LIPOKAP project, with 1970 Iranian healthy adults.

Key Clinical Message: Infections in infantile hemangiomas (IHs) are generally limited, and only few cases have been reported. The rapid expansion of an ulcerated IH should raise concern for possible complications to monitor and provide immediate therapeutic interventions. This case highlights the importance of prompt treatment in large segmental IHs to prevent ulceration and related complications, including bleeding and superinfection.

Exposure to occupational air pollution and vascular endothelial dysfunction in workers of the steel industry in Iran.

Air pollution is recognized as a risk factor for cardiovascular diseases; however, the precise underlying mechanisms remain unclear. This study investigated the impact of occupational air pollution exposure on endothelial function in workers within the steel industry. Specifically, we examined male employees in the coke-making division of the Isfahan Steel Company in Iran, as well as those in administrative roles with no known history of cardiovascular risk.
