Cancer has emerged as a leading cause of death throughout the world. Peptides are a novel class of anticancer agents that can specifically target cancer cells with low toxicity to normal tissues and thus, offer new opportunities for future cancer treatment. On the other hand, Ciprofloxacin, an antibiotic, also known to its anticancer property for enabling cell cycle arrest and creating double strand breaks in nucleic acid can trigger apoptosis of cancer cells.

Anthocyanins exhibit antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities via a multitude of biochemical mechanisms. However, the signaling pathways involved in the actions of anthocyanins against chronic inflammation are not fully understood. The effects of berry-rich anthocyanin supplements (320 mg/day) for four weeks were examined on features of metabolic syndrome components and the expression of PPAR-γ, Nrf2, and NF-κB dependent genes in MetS and healthy subjects.

Background: Vitamin status and inflammatory mechanisms may be related to menstrual cycle abnormalities. We investigated the associations between serum fat soluble vitamin (vitamins A and E) concentrations and biomarkers of inflammation and antioxidant status with menstrual characteristics, primary dysmenorrhea (PD) and premenstrual syndrome (PMS) in healthy adolescents.

Methods: A total of 897 adolescent girls either suffering from PMS (n = 134), PD (n = 322), PMS and PD (n = 293) or healthy adolescents (n = 148) were recruited.

Identification of Novel 1,3,5-Triphenylbenzene Derivative Compounds as Inhibitors of Hen Lysozyme Amyloid Fibril Formation.

Int J Mol Sci

November 2019

Section of Biochemical Sciences, Department of Biomedical, Experimental and Clinical Sciences, University of Florence, I-50134 Florence, Italy.

Deposition of soluble proteins as insoluble amyloid fibrils is associated with a number of pathological states. There is a growing interest in the identification of small molecules that can prevent proteins from undergoing amyloid fibril formation. In the present study, a series of small aromatic compounds with different substitutions of 1,3,5-triphenylbenzene have been synthesized and their possible effects on amyloid fibril formation by hen egg white lysozyme (HEWL), a model protein for amyloid formation, and of their resulting toxicity were examined.

Background: Gamete cryopreservation is an inseparable part of assisted reproductive technology, and vitrification is an effective approach to the cryopreservation of oocytes. The aim of this study was to investigate vitrification effects on the expression levels of mitochondrial transcription factor A (Tfam) and mitochondrial-encoded cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (Cox1) in mouse metaphase II oocytes.

Methods: Oocytes were selected by simple random sampling and distributed amongst five experimental groups (control [n=126], docetaxel [n=132], docetaxel+cryoprotectant agent [CPA] [n=134], docetaxel+vitrification [n=132], and vitrification [n=123]).

Evaluation of Human Anti IgG Polyclonal Antibody Production Conjugated with Peroxidase in Egg Yolk.

Iran J Public Health

July 2019

Department of Microbiology, Faculty of Advanced Science and Technology, Tehran Medical Sciences, Islamic Azad University, Tehran, Iran.

Background: Egg yolk is a rich and accessible source of yolk immunoglobulin (Y immunoglobulin). Presently, polyclonal antibodies from mammalian sources are used for diagnosis. Antibody production from egg yolk gives a higher yield and turnover than that from lab animals, and invasive methods such as phlebotomy and causing stress to the animals are not required.

The interaction ability of bovine serum albumin (BSA) with 2,6-divanillylidenecyclohexanone (DVH) as a stable curcumin derivative was investigated using fluorescence and circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy techniques under simulative physiological conditions (pH = 7.2). Following the obtained results of binding studies, bovine serum albumin nanoparticles (BSANPs) were synthesized and characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), filed emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), atomic force microscope (AFM) and dynamic light scattering (DLS).

Mastitis, an inflammatory response of mammary glands to invading bacteria, is one of the most economically costly diseases affecting dairy animals. Escherichia coli can be introduced as a major etiological agent of bovine mastitis in well-managed dairy farms. It is of great significance to understand the regulatory mechanisms by which the disease can be controlled.

The demands for genotyping techniques with acceptable precision, accuracy, cost-effectiveness in high throughput formats made driving forces for continuous development of novel technologies. A wide range of mutation detection techniques based on polymerase chain reaction (PCR) have been introduced. The best alternatives were the isothermal amplification technologies that those did not require a thermal cycler.

Background: Pulmonary thromboembolism (PTE) is a serious and life-threatening condition. Diagnosis of PTE can be challenging in emergency departments, as there is no absolutely reliable biomarker for the diagnosis of PTE. Copeptin (COP) is a new biomarker, which may be valuable in the diagnosis of PTE; however, its role has not been well studied.

Electrospun triple-layered PLLA/gelatin. PRGF/PLLA scaffold induces fibroblast migration.

J Cell Biochem

July 2019

Department of Tissue engineering and Applied Cell Sciences, School Advanced Technologies in Medicine, Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences, Tehran, Iran.

The function of fibroblast cells in wounded areas results in reconstruction of the extra cellular matrix and consequently resolution of granulation tissue. It is suggested that the use of platelet-rich plasma can accelerate the healing process in nonhealing or slow-healing wounds. In this study, a simple and novel method has been used to fabricate an electrospun three-layered scaffold containing plasma rich in growth factor with the aim of increasing the proliferation and migration of fibroblast cells in vitro.

Differential expression of S1P receptor subtypes in human bladder transitional cell carcinoma.

Clin Transl Oncol

September 2019

Department of Clinical Biochemistry, Faculty of Medical Sciences, Tarbiat Modares University, Tehran, Iran.

Purpose: Sphingosine 1 phosphate (S1P), S1P receptors (S1PRs) and their signaling pathways play an important role in the fate of cancer cells. The expression pattern of S1PR subtypes (S1PR1-S1PR5) may alter in cancer development stages, depending on the origin and the pathologic features of tumors. The present study aimed to examine the relationship between plasma S1P levels and the expression of S1PR subtypes in bladder tumors.
