Previous studies have shown that the combined effect of fetal hypoxia and maternal stress hormones predetermines tendency to nicotine addiction in adulthood. This study in rats aimed to investigate the effect of prenatal severe hypoxia (PSH) on acetylcholine metabolism in the developing brain, as well as on expression of acetylcholine receptors and in both the developing brain and adult brain structures following nicotine consumption. In the developing brain of PSH rats, no changes were found in the activity of choline acetyltransferase (ChAT) and acetylcholinesterase (AChE) or disturbances in the acetylcholine levels.

(1) Background: Neurological deficits associated with coronavirus disease (COVID-19) exacerbate respiratory dysfunction, necessitating rehabilitation strategies that address both. Previous studies have demonstrated that spinal cord transcutaneous stimulation (scTS) can facilitate the excitation of respiratory spinal neural networks in patients with post-COVID-19 syndrome. This study evaluates the efficacy of combining scTS with respiratory training (RT) to improve respiratory function in individuals with post-COVID-19 pulmonary deficits; (2) Methods: In this before-after, case-controlled clinical trial, five individuals with post-acute COVID-19 respiratory deficits participated in two interventional programs: 10 daily sessions of respiratory training (RT), followed by 10 daily sessions of scTS combined with RT (scTS + RT).

Acomys cahirinus (referred to as "acomys" in this article) is a precocial rodent, born well-developed and mobile, capable of feeding independently and escaping predators shortly after birth. Notable for its advanced regenerative abilities and menstrual cycle, acomys serves as a unique model for studying diverse aspects of physiology and neuroscience, including developmental and regenerative neuroscience. Despite its significance, only sporadic and unsystematic data on the structure and development of the acomys brain are available.

To study the para- and transcellular permeability of columnar epithelium and follicle-associated epithelium of Peyer's patches in the rat intestine, LPS was applied from the mucosal side to simulate the action of endotoxins from gram-negative bacteria of gut microbiota. LPS did not affect transepithelial resistance or sodium fluorescein permeability, but increased the levels of claudin-3 and claudin-4 in enterocytes, suggesting strengthening of the paracellular intestinal barrier. Transcellular permeability was evaluated by electron microscopy based on the number of vesicular structures in the cytoplasm of different cell types.

Rat strains differ in physiology, behavior, and recovery after central nervous system injury. To assess these differences, we compared the gross and local anatomy and neuromorphology of the lumbar spinal cord of the Wistar and Dark Agouti (DA) strains. The key findings include (i) distinct spatial relationships between vertebrae and spinal segments in the two strains; (ii) Wistar rats have larger volumes of spinal cord gray and white matter; (iii) DA rats have smaller total neuronal populations, thus indicating an expectation of smaller local neuronal populations; (iv) this expectation was confirmed for interneurons expressing calbindin 28 kDa.

The effect of stress in pregnant female Wistar rats on the behavior and lipid peroxidation (LP) in the neocortex, hippocampus and hypothalamus in the female F2 generation during the ovarian cycle was investigated. We subjected pregnant females to daily 1-hour immobilization stress from the 15th to the 19th days of pregnancy. Spatial learning, memory, and reactivity of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenocortical system (HPA axis) were studied in adult male rats, whose mothers during pregnancy were subjected to acute moderate normobaric hypoxia, or repeated injections of buspirone, an agonist of type 1A serotonergic receptors (5HT1A), or their combination. Prenatal treatment with buspirone in rats with prenatal hypoxia impaired learning ability during the first day of 5-day training. A decrease in the effectiveness of long-term memory in comparison with short-term memory was revealed in two groups of rats: prenatal treatment with buspirone in combination with hypoxia and injection of physiological saline without hypoxia.
