Multimodal Approach of Pulmonary Artery Intimal Sarcoma: A Single-Institution Experience.

Introduction: Pulmonary artery sarcoma (PAS) is a rare tumor, whose therapeutic approach is mainly based on surgery, either pneumonectomy or pulmonary endarterectomy (PEA). The prognosis reported in published series is very poor, with survival of 1.5 months without any kind of treatment.

No-Hypersignaling Principle.

Unlabelled: Green GABA (GGABA) and Oolong GABA (OGABA) teas are relatively new varieties of tea, whose chemical composition and functional properties are largely under-studied, despite their promising health capacities. Post stroke depression (PSD) is a complication of stroke with high clinical relevance, yielding increasing mortality and morbidity rates, and a lower response to common therapies and rehabilitation.

Methods: Two chemically characterized commercial samples of GGABA and OGABA were investigated for effects on mood following oral administration using a mouse model of PSD, through common validated tests including the Despair Swimming Test and Tail Suspension Test.

Feasibility of allogeneic stem-cell transplantation after azacitidine bridge in higher-risk myelodysplastic syndromes and low blast count acute myeloid leukemia: results of the BMT-AZA prospective study.

Background: Allogeneic stem-cell transplantation (HSCT) is the only curative treatment in myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS). Azacitidine (AZA) is increasingly used prior to HSCT, however in Europe it is only approved for patients who are not eligible for HSCT.

Patients And Methods: We conducted a phase II multicenter study to prospectively evaluate the feasibility of HSCT after treatment with AZA in 70 patients with a myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), 19 with acute myeloid leukemia (AML), and 8 with chronic myelomonocytic leukemia (CMML).

Enantioselective Modulatory Effects of Naringenin Enantiomers on the Expression Levels of miR-17-3p Involved in Endogenous Antioxidant Defenses.

Naringenin is a flavanone present in citrus fruit as a mixture of chiral isomers. The numerous biological properties attributed to this compound include antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities, even though the molecular mechanisms of these remain unknown. This study aims to evaluate the effects of racemic and enantiomeric naringenin on the expression levels of miR-17-3p, miR-25-5p and relative mRNA targets, to elucidate the mechanisms underlying these antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

Effects of Tea and Coffee Consumption on Cardiovascular Diseases and Relative Risk Factors: An Update.

Background: Tea and coffee are the second and third most consumed beverages after water, respectively. The high consumption of these beverages is due to the sensorial properties and effects on psychological and physiological functions, induced by caffeine and many other bioactive components responsible for the protective effects on human health generally ascribed to these beverages.

Methods: The goal of this review article is to collect the scientific data obtained from clinical trials published in the last five years on the role of tea and coffee consumption against cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) and CVD risk factors such as hypertension, hyperglicemia, and hyperlipidaemia.

Biological Activities of Essential Oils: From Plant Chemoecology to Traditional Healing Systems.

Essential oils are complex mixtures of hydrocarbons and their oxygenated derivatives arising from two different isoprenoid pathways. Essential oils are produced by glandular trichomes and other secretory structures, specialized secretory tissues mainly diffused onto the surface of plant organs, particularly flowers and leaves, thus exerting a pivotal ecological role in plant. In addition, essential oils have been used, since ancient times, in many different traditional healing systems all over the world, because of their biological activities.

Daidzein and its Effects on Brain.

Among naturally occurring isoflavones, soy isoflavones are an important class with various biological activities. Due to their phytoestrogenic structure, their effects on the brain are profound thus making the neurobiological effects of these compounds an active area of research. One such compound is daidzein, which has been reported to affect various neurobiological regulatory mechanisms such as behavior, cognition, growth, development and reproduction.

Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement Using Transaortic Access: Experience From the Multicenter, Multinational, Prospective ROUTE Registry.

Objectives: The Registry of the Utilization of the TAo-TAVR approach using the Edwards SAPIEN Valve (ROUTE) was established to assess the effectiveness and safety of the use of transaortic (TAo) access for transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) procedures (NCT01991431).

Background: TAVR represents an alternative to surgical valve replacement in high-risk patients. Whereas the transfemoral access route is used commonly as the first-line approach, transapical access is an option for patients not suitable for transfemoral treatment mainly due to anatomic conditions.

Del Nido cardioplegia in the setting of minimally invasive aortic valve surgery.

The purpose of this study is to report our experience with del Nido cardioplegia (DNC) in the setting of minimally invasive aortic valve surgery. A Peculiar Formula of Essential Amino Acids Prevents Rosuvastatin Myopathy in Mice.

Aims: Myopathy, characterized by mitochondrial oxidative stress, occurs in ∼10% of statin-treated patients, and a major risk exists with potent statins such as rosuvastatin (Rvs). We sought to determine whether a peculiar branched-chain amino acid-enriched mixture (BCAAem), found to improve mitochondrial function and reduce oxidative stress in muscle of middle-aged mice, was able to prevent Rvs myopathy.

Results: Dietary supplementation of BCAAem was able to prevent the structural and functional alterations of muscle induced by Rvs in young mice.

Post-Stroke Depression Modulation and in Vivo Antioxidant Activity of Gallic Acid and Its Synthetic Derivatives in a Murine Model System.

Gallic acid (3,4,5-trihydroxybenzoic acid, GA) is a plant secondary metabolite, which shows antioxidant activity and is commonly found in many plant-based foods and beverages. Recent evidence suggests that oxidative stress contributes to the development of many human chronic diseases, including cardiovascular and neurodegenerative pathologies, metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes and cancer. GA and its derivative, methyl-3-O-methyl gallate (M3OMG), possess physiological and pharmacological activities closely related to their antioxidant properties.

Successful Repair of a Bicuspid Pulmonary Autograft Valve Causing Early Insufficiency After a Ross Procedure.

The Ross procedure is an excellent option in terms of long-term outcomes for young patients requiring aortic valve replacement. We report the case of a 49-year-old woman who presented with worsening dyspnea and episodes of presyncope in the context of a patient-prosthesis mismatch, 13 years after mechanical aortic valve replacement. She underwent a Ross procedure despite the pulmonary valve being bicuspid at intraoperative examination.

Two Years Follow up of Domain Specific Cognitive Training in Relapsing Remitting Multiple Sclerosis: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

Cognitive rehabilitation in multiple sclerosis (MS) has been reported to induce neuropsychological improvements, but the persistence of these effects has been scarcely investigated over long follow ups. Here, the results of a multicenter randomized clinical trial are reported, in which the efficacy of 15 week domain specific cognitive training was evaluated at 2 years follow up in 41 patients. Included patients were randomly assigned either to domain specific cognitive rehabilitation, or to aspecific psychological intervention.

A Rare Cause of Lower Extremity Ulcers: Prolidase Deficiency.

Prolidase deficiency is an autosomal recessive disorder, which is associated with chronic skin ulcers, a characteristic facial appearance, mental retardation, and recurrent infections. This study describes 4 patients with recurrent leg ulcerations and abnormal facies who were first clinically suspected of prolidase deficiency and then biochemically confirmed. Two siblings and 2 other patients were admitted to our clinic at different times, and they had some common features such as chronic leg and foot ulcers recalcitrant to treatment, consanguineous parents, facial dysmorphism, mental retardation, and widespread telangiectasias.

Antidepressive-like effects and antioxidant activity of green tea and GABA green tea in a mouse model of post-stroke depression.

Scope: Growing evidence suggests that oxidative stress plays a role in the development of chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease and some psychiatric disorders. Tea consumption exerts beneficial effects against damage induced by cerebral ischemia-reperfusion in ischemic stroke and depressive symptoms in depression. The aim of this study was to evaluate, in vivo, the protective activity of green tea (GT) and GABA green tea (GGT) against post-stroke depression (PSD), a common consequence of stroke.

Clinical dissection of childhood occipital epilepsy of Gastaut and prognostic implication.

Background And Purpose: Our aim was to describe the clinical and electrical features and the long-term evolution of childhood occipital epilepsy of Gastaut (COE-G) in a cohort of patients and to compare long-term prognosis between patients with and without other epileptic syndromes.

Methods: This was a retrospective analysis of the long-term outcome of epilepsy in 129 patients with COE-G who were referred to 23 Italian epilepsy centres and one in Austria between 1991 and 2004. Patients were evaluated clinically and with electroencephalograms for 10.

Missing strings of residues in protein crystal structures.

A large fraction of the protein crystal structures deposited in the Protein Data Bank are incomplete, since the position of one or more residues is not reported, despite these residues are part of the material that was analyzed. This may bias the use of the protein crystal structures by molecular biologists. Here we observe that in the large majority of the protein crystal structures strings of residues are missing.

Sutureless Aortic Valve Replacement in the Setting of Triple-Valve Surgery.

Sutureless aortic valve replacement is an emerging alternative to standard aortic valve replacement in high-risk surgical patients. We present our surgical technique for sutureless aortic valve replacement in patients undergoing triple-valve surgery. This procedure has been performed in six patients with excellent clinical and echocardiographic results.
