The food recovery hierarchy (FRH) is an important concept widely used worldwide as a guideline for food waste management policies. It consists of different options for food waste management hierarchically organized, in which source reduction is the most preferable option, followed by food donation, feeding animals, industrial use, composting, energy recovery, and landfilling. The most common approaches used in the literature to validate the FRH concept consider both, a user-side and donor-side perspectives.

Considering the importance of alternative methodologies to animal experimentation, we propose an organoid-based biological model for in vitro blood vessel generation, achieved through co-culturing endothelial and vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs). Initially, the organoids underwent comprehensive characterization, revealing VSMCs (α-SMA + cells) at the periphery and endothelial cells (CD31 cells) at the core. Additionally, ephrin B2 and ephrin B4, genes implicated in arterial and venous formation respectively, were used to validate the obtained organoid.

Background: Biochemical events provoked by oxidative stress and advanced glycation may be inhibited by combining natural bioactives with classic therapeutic agents, which arise as strategies to mitigate diabetic complications. The aim of this study was to investigate whether lycopene combined with a reduced insulin dose is able to control glycemia and to oppose glycoxidative stress in kidneys of diabetic rats.
Methods: Streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats were treated with 45 mg/kg lycopene + 1 U/day insulin for 30 days.

Understanding the complex mechanisms involved in diseases caused by or related to important genetic variants has led to the development of clinically useful biomarkers. However, the increasing number of described variants makes it difficult to identify variants worthy of investigation, and poses challenges to their validation. We combined publicly available datasets and open source robust bioinformatics tools with molecular quantum chemistry methods to investigate the involvement of selectins, important molecules in the cell adhesion process that play a fundamental role in the cancer metastasis process.

The aberrant activation of HER2 has a pivotal role in bone metastasis implantation and progression in several tumor types, including prostate cancer (PC). Trastuzumab and other anti-HER2 therapies, such as lapatinib, have been used in human breast cancer HER2 positive. Although HER2 overexpression has been reported in PC, anti-HER2 therapy response has revealed conflicting results.

Background: Here, we evaluated whether the histone lysine demethylase 5B (JARID1B), is involved in osteogenic phenotype commitment of periodontal ligament cells (PDLCs), by considering their heterogeneity for osteoblast differentiation.
Materials And Methods: Epigenetic, transcriptional, and protein levels of a gene set, involved in the osteogenesis, were investigated by performing genome-wide DNA (hydroxy)methylation, mRNA expression, and western blotting analysis at basal (without osteogenic induction), and at the 3rd and 10th days of osteogenic stimulus, in vitro, using PDLCs with low (l) and high (h) osteogenic potential as biological models.
Results: h-PDLCs showed reduced levels of JARID1B, compared to l-PDLCs, with significant inversely proportional correlations between RUNX2 and RUNX2/p57.

Osteopontin (OPN) is a protein synthesized by a large number of cells, and its overexpression has been associated with the development and prognosis of cancer. OPN overexpression has been claimed to be a marker for the development of bone metastasis in human cancers, but no prior research has investigated the association between OPN expression and the metastasis of canine mammary gland tumors (MGTs) and prostate cancer (PC). Therefore, we investigated OPN expression in MGTs and PC samples from 50 canine patients with or without metastasis (bone vs.
