The word "elective" refers to medications and procedures undertaken by choice or with a lower grade of prioritization. Patients usually use elective medications or undergo elective procedures to treat pathologic conditions or for cosmetic enhancement, impacting their lifestyle positively and, thus, improving their quality of life. However, those interventions can affect the homeostasis of the tear film and ocular surface.

Background: The symptomatic (swelling and pain) salivary gland obstructions are caused by sialolithiasis and salivary duct stenosis, negatively affecting quality of life (QOL), with almost all candidates for clinical measures and minimally invasive sialendoscopy. The impact of sialendoscopy treatment on the QOL has been little addressed nowadays. The objective is to prospectively evaluate the impact of sialendoscopy on the quality of life of patients undergoing sialendoscopy due to benign salivary obstructive diseases, measured through QOL questionnaires of xerostomia degree, the oral health impact profile and post sialendoscopy satisfaction questionnaires.

In Brazil, gastric cancer is the third most common type of cancer among men and fifth among women, with an estimated 13360 new cases among men and 7870 among women each year during the 2020-2022 period. This study presents reflections and attempts to add knowledge to the theme of quality of life (QoL) in patients with gastric adenocarcinoma and describes some of its characteristics in three regions of Brazil, with an evaluation of the disease's impacts in various dimensions of life, as reported by the patients themselves. We performed a narrative review of the literature and a data analysis of studies on QoL in Brazilian patients treated for gastric adenocarcinoma from three different cities in three geographic regions: Brasília (the midwest), Jaú (the southeast), and Macapá (the north).

Introduction: Amniotic fluid "sludge" has been associated with an increased rate of spontaneous preterm delivery before 35 weeks, a higher frequency of clinical and histologic chorioamnionitis in a high-risk population. Only one study evaluating the use of antibiotics in the presence of amniotic fluid "sludge" showed reduced rates of spontaneous preterm birth at <34 weeks. The objective of this study was to evaluate routine antibiotic treatment in the presence of amniotic fluid "sludge" for prevention of preterm delivery.

The increasing number of patients looking for eye care or cosmetic procedures involving the eyes, together with a better understanding of the pathophysiological mechanisms of dry eye disease (DED), have led to the need for a specific report about iatrogenic dry eye within the TFOS DEWS II. Topical medications can cause DED due to their allergic, toxic and immuno-inflammatory effects on the ocular surface.

Hypocapnia and endothelial dysfunction might impair microvascular cerebral blood flow (CBF) and cerebrovascular reactivity to CO (CVR). Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is characteristically associated with chronic alveolar hyperventilation and microvascular endothelial dysfunction. We therefore determined CBF (pre-frontal blood flow index (BFI) by the indocyanine green-near infrared spectroscopy methodology) during hypocapnia and hypercapnia in 25 PAH patients and 10 gender- and age-matched controls.

Introduction: Studies to understand the vocal profile of a population are important to plan collective health measures. The prevalence of vocal symptoms can be indicative of vocal disorder and must be investigated to support measures to prevent vocal diseases.
Aim: To characterize vocal symptoms in college students and their possible causes, and to analyze the association between hoarseness, vocal fatigue, phlegm, and burning in the throat with the possible causes mentioned.

Background: Antioxidant nutrient intake and the lesser formation of free radicals seem to contribute to chronic diseases. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the intake profile of the main dietary antioxidants in a representative sample of the adult Brazilian population and discuss the main consequences of a low intake of these micronutrients on overall health.
Methods: The sample comprised 2344 individuals aged 40 years or older from 150 cities and was based on a probabilistic sample from official data.

Impaired O(2) delivery relative to O(2) demands at the onset of exercise might influence the response profile of muscle fractional O(2) extraction (≅Δ[deoxy-Hb/Mb] by near-infrared spectroscopy) either by accelerating its rate of increase or creating an "overshoot" (OS) in patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). We therefore assessed the kinetics of O(2) uptake [Formula: see text] Δ[deoxy-Hb/Mb] in the vastus lateralis, and heart rate (HR) at the onset of heavy-intensity exercise in 14 females with PAH (connective tissue disease, IPAH, portal hypertension, and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome) and 11 age- and gender-matched controls. Patients had slower [Formula: see text] and HR dynamics than controls (τ[Formula: see text] = 62.

This study aimed to investigate the clinical usefulness of an anthropometrically based method for estimating leg lean volume (LLV) in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) who presented or not with nutritional depletion. We prospectively evaluated a group of forty-eight patients (thirty-eight males) with moderate to severe COPD (Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung disease stages II-IV) who underwent a 6 min walking test and knee isokinetic dynamometry. Leg lean mass (muscle mass plus bone) was determined by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) with derivation of its respective volume: these values were compared with those obtained by the truncated cones method first described by Jones and Pearson in 1969.

Background: Acoustic rhinometry indirectly calculates cross-sectional areas of the nose at various locations from the nostrils and the total volume of the nasal cavity. These parameters are calculated from an area-distance curve displayed by the device.
Methods: Seventy-seven adults between the ages of 20 and 40 years who had no nasal complaints were examined by acoustic rhinometry and fiberoptic nasal endoscopy in an attempt to compare and correlate areas of nasal narrowing detected by these two methods.

Objective: The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of partially hydrolyzed guar gum (PHGG) dietary fiber towards intestinal iron absorption, for dietary intake and on the growth of rats with iron deficiency anemia in comparison to those fed on a diet with cellulose and without dietary fiber.
Materials And Methods: Male Wistar rats (n=24) weaned at 21 days were fed with AIN93-G diet without iron for 2 weeks in order to induce iron deficiency anemia. At 36 days old, the anemic rats were divided into three groups: (1) PHGG group-100g of PHGG per kg of diet; (2) Cellulose group-100g of cellulose per kg of diet; (3) Control group-diet without dietary fiber.

Background: Aerobic training has a number of well known beneficial effects in both normal and asthmatic children. However, the impact of training on the clinical management of the underlying bronchial asthma remains controversial, particularly in the most severe patients.
Methods: Clinical evaluation, spirometric tests, symptom limited maximum exercise testing, and exercise challenge tests were performed in a group of children with stable moderate to severe asthma.
