Background: Recent studies have shown that elective induction of labor versus expectant management after 39 weeks of pregnancy result in lower incidence of perinatal complications, while the proportion of cesarean deliveries remains stable, or even decreases. Still, evidence regarding collateral consequences of the potential increase of induction of labor procedures is still lacking. Also, the results of these studies must be carefully interpreted and thoroughly counter-balanced with women's thoughts and opinions regarding the active management of the last weeks of pregnancy.

Introduction: Hyperammonemic encephalopathy (HAE) is a serious adverse effect of valproate semisodium, which is facilitated by the potential for drug interaction. However, despite frequent co-prescription of valproate semisodium and lithium, the role of this combination in the occurrence of HAE has not been defined in the literature. This case report concerns the occurrence of HAE concomitant with the initiation of lithium in a 29-year-old patient who had been placed on valproate semisodium for a schizoaffective disorder.

Introduction: Effective male contraceptive options are condoms and vasectomy. Vasectomy should not be considered a reversible method of contraception even if vasovasostomy can be offered to men to restore fertility after vasectomy. Therefore, there is a real questioning among urologists concerning cryopreservation before vasectomy.

Semi-automated versus manual embryo vitrification: inter-operator variability, time-saving, and clinical outcomes.

J Assist Reprod Genet

December 2021

Department of Reproductive Medicine, Paule de Viguier Hospital, Toulouse University Hospital, 330 Avenue de Grande Bretagne, 31059, Toulouse, France.

Purpose: Does semi-automated vitrification have lower inter-operator variability and better clinical outcomes than manual vitrification?

Methods: Retrospective analyses of 282 patients whose embryos had been cryopreserved, manually with Irvine®-CBS® (MV) or semi-automatically vitrified with the GAVI® method (AV) (from November 2017 to September 2020). Both techniques were performed during the same period by 5 operators. Inter-operator variability was statistically analyzed between operators who performed the vitrification and those who performed the warming process to compare the intact survival rate (% embryos with 100% intact blastomeres) and the positive survival rate (at least 50% intact blastomeres).

Objective: To assess the cost-effectiveness of vaginal misoprostol (PGE1; 25 μg) compared with a slow-release dinoprostone (PGE2) pessary (10 μg) for labor induction due to an unfavorable cervix at term.

Methods: We used data from an open-label multicenter, randomized non-inferiority trial that recruited women for whom labor was induced for medical reasons. The incremental cost-effectiveness ratio was assessed from the payer's perspective, with the focus on inpatient care costs and using the cesarean deliveries avoided (CDA) rate as the primary analysis and the rate of vaginal delivery within 24 h (VD24) as the secondary analysis.

Regulatory measures and public concerns regarding bisphenol A (BPA) have led to its replacement by a variety of alternatives in consumer products. Due to their structural similarity to BPA, these alternatives are under surveillance, however, for potential endocrine disruption. Understanding the materno-fetal transfer of these BPA-related alternatives across the placenta is therefore crucial to assess prenatal exposure risks.

Preeclampsia (PE) is a multifactorial pregnancy disease, characterized by new-onset gestational hypertension with (or without) proteinuria or end-organ failure, exclusively observed in humans. It is a leading cause of maternal morbidity affecting 3-7% of pregnant women worldwide. PE pathophysiology could result from abnormal placentation due to a defective trophoblastic invasion and an impaired remodeling of uterine spiral arteries, leading to a poor adaptation of utero-placental circulation.
