The ability to accurately quantify biological age could help monitor and control healthy aging. Epigenetic clocks have emerged as promising tools for estimating biological age, yet they have been developed from heterogeneous bulk tissues, and are thus composites of two aging processes, one reflecting the change of cell-type composition with age and another reflecting the aging of individual cell-types. There is thus a need to dissect and quantify these two components of epigenetic clocks, and to develop epigenetic clocks that can yield biological age estimates at cell-type resolution.

Synthetic biology is rapidly evolving into a data-intensive science that increasingly relies on massive data sets; one of its applications is the evaluation of the economic viability of fermentation processes. However, the key economic indicators, namely titer, rate, and yield (TRY), which respectively reflect the downstream processing, reactor size, and raw material costs, are not well captured in bioinformatics databases. In this paper, we present BioTRY, an intuitive and user-friendly tool that contains >5,000 biochemicals and >3,800 strains, along with over 52,000 corresponding TRY entries with original references.

Ketogenic diet-induced bile acids protect against obesity through reduced calorie absorption.

The low-carbohydrate ketogenic diet (KD) has long been practiced for weight loss, but the underlying mechanisms remain elusive. Gut microbiota and metabolites have been suggested to mediate the metabolic changes caused by KD consumption, although the particular gut microbes or metabolites involved are unclear. Here, we show that KD consumption enhances serum levels of taurodeoxycholic acid (TDCA) and tauroursodeoxycholic acid (TUDCA) in mice to decrease body weight and fasting glucose levels.

Therefore, comprehensive cosmetic ingredients bioinformatics platform (CCIBP) was developed here, which is a unique comprehensive cosmetic database providing information on regulations, physicochemical properties, and human metabolic pathways for cosmetic molecules from major regions of the world, whilst also correlating plant information in natural products. CCIBP supports formulation analysis, efficacy component analysis, and also combines knowledge of synthetic biology to facilitate access to natural molecules and biosynthetic production.

Developmental trajectories of gene expression may reverse in their direction during ageing, a phenomenon previously linked to cellular identity loss. Our analysis of cerebral cortex, lung, liver, and muscle transcriptomes of 16 mice, covering development and ageing intervals, revealed widespread but tissue-specific ageing-associated expression reversals. Cumulatively, these reversals create a unique phenomenon: mammalian tissue transcriptomes diverge from each other during postnatal development, but during ageing, they tend to converge towards similar expression levels, a process we term vergence followed by nvergence (DiCo).
