Purpose: The services defined as complementary and alternative medicine/healthcare (CAM) are used to varying degrees according to the nature of the health problem, and musculoskeletal disorders, in particular, often lead to the use of CAM. Chronic pain is often cited as a reason for using CAM, and it is also the cardinal symptom of patients with back pain referred for specialist care. However, previous studies do not consider the heterogeneity of back pain when examining the use of CAM.

May 2024

Department of Radiology, Kolding Hospital- Part of Lillebaelt Hospital, Kolding, Denmark; Department of Radiology, Vejle Hospital - Part of Lillebaelt Hospital, Vejle, Denmark; Department of Regional Health Research, University of Southern Denmark, Odense, Denmark.

Article Synopsis
  • Radiographer-led reporting was introduced in the UK to tackle reporting backlogs, but motivations for pursuing postgraduate education in this field are not well understood.
  • An online survey involving 239 radiographers from several European countries showed that factors like increased knowledge and job satisfaction were key motivators, while concerns like reduced patient contact were less influential.
  • The results indicate that motivations can vary by gender and country, highlighting the need for more research, as the sample size may not fully represent all reporting radiographers.

An adult-based genetic risk score for liver fat associates with liver and plasma lipid traits in children and adolescents.

Liver Int

August 2023

Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Basic Metabolic Research, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen, Copenhagen, Denmark.

Background & Aims: Genome-wide association studies have identified steatogenic variants that also showed pleiotropic effects on cardiometabolic traits in adults. We investigated the effect of eight previously reported genome-wide significant steatogenic variants, individually and combined in a weighted genetic risk score (GRS), on liver and cardiometabolic traits, and the predictive ability of the GRS for hepatic steatosis in children and adolescents.

Approach & Results: Children and adolescents with overweight (including obesity) from an obesity clinic group (n = 1768) and a population-based group (n = 1890) were included.

Background Lectin-like oxidized low-density lipoprotein (ox-LDL) receptor-1 is a scavenger receptor for oxidized low-density lipoprotein. In adults, higher soluble lectin-like ox-LDL receptor-1 (sLOX-1) levels are associated with cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and obesity, but a similar link in pediatric overweight/obesity remains uncertain. Methods and Results Analyses were based on the cross-sectional HOLBAEK Study, including 4- to 19-year-olds from an obesity clinic group with body mass index >90th percentile (n=1815) and from a population-based group (n=2039).
