Background: There is a lack of empirical evidence on the level of cultural adaptation required for psychological interventions developed in Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich, and Democratic (WEIRD) societies to be effective for the treatment of common mental disorders among culturally and ethnically diverse groups. This lack of evidence is partly due to insufficient documentation of cultural adaptation in psychological trials. Standardised documentation is needed in order to enhance empirical and meta-analytic evidence.

Worse off by waiting for treatment? The impact of waiting time on clinical course and treatment outcome for depression in routine care.

J Affect Disord

February 2023

Department of Clinical Psychological Science, Faculty of Psychology & Neuroscience, Maastricht University, Maastricht, the Netherlands.

Background: Long-term untreated major depressive disorder (MDD) is associated with a less favorable clinical course. Waiting time, defined as the interval between diagnostic workup and treatment initiation, may be clinically relevant given the prolongation of the pre-existing duration of untreated MDD. However, it is currently unknown whether and to what extent waiting time affects treatment course in routine outpatient care.

Background: People with severe mental illness (SMI) often suffer from long-lasting symptoms that negatively influence their social functioning, their ability to live a meaningful life, and participation in society. Interventions aimed at increasing physical activity can improve social functioning, but people with SMI experience multiple barriers to becoming physically active. Besides, the implementation of physical activity interventions in day-to-day practice is difficult.

Department of Biological Psychology, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, Van der Boechorststraat 7-10, 1081 BT, Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

This study introduces and illustrates the potential of an integrated multi-omics approach in investigating the underlying biology of complex traits such as childhood aggressive behavior. In 645 twins (cases = 42%), we trained single- and integrative multi-omics models to identify biomarkers for subclinical aggression and investigated the connections among these biomarkers. Our data comprised transmitted and two non-transmitted polygenic scores (PGSs) for 15 traits, 78,772 CpGs, and 90 metabolites.

Ketamine is increasingly prescribed for treatment-resistant depression (TRD), often as add-on to regular antidepressants. Augmentation of ketamine to monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) is advised against, as this practice might increase blood pressure or cause serotonin syndrome. Despite the potential relevance for patients, little is known about actual side effects of combined use.

Momentary effects of Temstem, an app for voice-hearing individuals: Results from naturalistic data from 1048 users.

Internet Interv

December 2022

Department of Clinical, Neuro- and Developmental Psychology, Amsterdam Public Health Research Institute, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, Van der Boechorststraat 7, 1081 BT Amsterdam, Netherlands.

Background: Temstem is a mobile application developed in cooperation with voice-hearing persons to help them cope with distressing voices. After psychoeducation about voice hearing, Temstem offers two functions: Silencing is a mode designed to inhibit voice activity through the processing of incompatible language; the Challenging mode introduces dual tasking (as used in eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing) designed to reduce the emotionality and vividness of a voice memory. Two different language games, Lingo Tapper and Word Link, are provided, containing both functions.

Objective: Up to 37% of bariatric surgery patients suffer from insufficient weight loss or weight regain and mental health symptoms in the longer term. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) may be an effective adjunct intervention to optimize patients' psychological functioning and weight loss results. To examine the value of adding preoperative CBT to bariatric surgery, three- and five-year follow-up data are presented.

Prevalence and prediction of dropout during depression treatment in routine outpatient care: an observational study.

Eur Arch Psychiatry Clin Neurosci

August 2023

Department of Clinical Psychological Science, Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience, Maastricht University, Maastricht, The Netherlands.

Efficacious treatments are available for major depressive disorder (MDD), but treatment dropout is common and decreases their effectiveness. However, knowledge about prevalence of treatment dropout and its risk factors in routine care is limited. The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of and risk factors for dropout in a large outpatient sample.

Cognitive trajectories during and after electroconvulsive therapy in patients with MDE: Taking different perspectives.

Cognitive function during an ECT care pathway is mainly investigated at the group level by analyzing mean cognitive test scores over time. However, there are important inter-individual differences, with some patients experiencing residual invalidating cognitive deficits. This study provides a nuanced examination of cognitive functioning during and after ECT by combining three approaches for data analysis.

Background: Culture is inevitably linked with the experience, interpretation and course of what modern biomedicine understands to be psychotic symptoms. However, data on psychoses in low- and middle-income countries are sparse. Our previous study showed that psychotic and mood-related experiences, symptoms and disorders are common among individuals who had received the ancestral calling to become a traditional health practitioner (THP) in rural KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.

Article Synopsis
  • * A review of various studies found that maintenance ketamine treatments (through different delivery methods) can help sustain its antidepressant effects with few significant side effects reported.
  • * More research is needed, particularly long-term and well-designed studies, to better understand the safety and effectiveness of maintenance ketamine and its role in regular clinical practice.

Cost-Effectiveness of Positive Memory Training (PoMeT) for the Treatment of Depression in Schizophrenia.

Int J Environ Res Public Health

September 2022

School of Psychology and Clinical Language Sciences, University of Reading, Whiteknights, Reading RG6 6AL, UK.

The Positive Memory Training (PoMeT) trial demonstrated reduced depression symptoms at 3 months for schizophrenia, but its longer-term outcome and cost impacts remain unknown. This study is a within-trial cost-utility analysis with quality-adjusted life years (QALYs) as outcome based on health-related quality of life (HRQoL) measurement and secondary outcome analyses of capability well-being. The incremental cost-effectiveness of PoMeT was compared to Treatment As Usual only (TAU) over 9 months from the 'health and social' care and 'societal' perspectives.

Preterm infants are at risk of developing social-emotional and behavioural difficulties. To understand the experiences of their caregivers in day-to-day life, parents (at 2 and 10 years) and teachers (at 10 years) completed a behavioural questionnaire and answered two open-ended questions addressing their concerns and the most positive aspects regarding their child and/or pupil (born <32 weeks gestation). Their answers were analyzed using thematic content analysis.

Objectives: The aim of this review is to establish the effectiveness of psychological relapse prevention interventions, as stand-alone interventions and in combination with maintenance antidepressant treatment (M-ADM) or antidepressant medication (ADM) discontinuation for patients with remitted anxiety disorders or major depressive disorders (MDD).

Methods: A systematic review and a meta-analysis were conducted. A literature search was conducted in PubMed, PsycINFO and Embase for randomised controlled trials (RCTs) comparing psychological relapse prevention interventions to treatment as usual (TAU), with the proportion of relapse/recurrence and/or time to relapse/recurrence as outcome measure.
