Myeloma or Kahler-Bozzolo disease represents around 1% of all malignant tumors and 10% of the haematological variety; it is a B-lymphocellular malignant neoplasia which originates from plasma cells that produce monoclonal immunoglobulin, infiltrating in and destroying the adjacent bone tissue. Myeloma may be distinguished at radiological imaging in four distinct types: single osseous lesions (solitary plasmacytoma), diffused skeletal effects (myelomatosis), diffused osteopenia and sclerosing myeloma. It is known that initial osteolysis may not be shown through radiographic examination or CT; the lysis only becomes evident when there is a bone loss of over 50%, usually in the presence of a > or = 0.

Multidetector computed tomography arthrography of the shoulder: diagnostic accuracy and indications.

Acta Radiol

June 2008

Department of Clinical Sciences, Section of Radiological Sciences, University of Parma, Parma Hospital, Parma, Italy.

Background: The presence of subcutaneous implants, such as permanent defibrillators, is an absolute contraindication to the use of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Moreover, MRI is unadvisable in subjects with metallic hardware near the area of study, as artifacts generated by such materials distort image quality.

Purpose: To evaluate the diagnostic accuracy and indications of arthrography with multidetector computed tomography arthrography (arthro-MDCT) of the shoulder in patients with absolute or relative contraindications to MRI and in patients with periarticular metal implants using diagnostic arthroscopy as the gold standard.

Functional long-term outcome of the shoulder after antegrade intramedullary nailing in humeral diaphyseal fractures.

Chir Organi Mov

May 2008

Orthopaedics, Traumatology and Functional Rehabilitation Unit Department of Surgical Sciences, University of Parma Parma Hospital, Via Gramsci 14, 43100, Parma, Italy.

Intramedullary nailing is one of the most commonly used surgical treatments for humeral diaphyseal fractures. Once an intramedullary fixation technique has been selected, the choice between antegrade or retrograde approach remains controversial. Forty patients with humeral diaphyseal fracture treated with Seidel antegrade intramedullary nailing through an "danterior deltoid incision" (ADI) were evaluated after an average period of 62 months.

Introduction: Pancreas divisum is a congenital anatomical anomaly characterized by the lack of fusion of the ventral and dorsal parts of the pancreas during the eighth week of fetal development. This condition is found in 5% to 14% of the general population. In pancreas divisum, the increased incidence of acute and chronic pancreatitis is caused by inadequate drainage of secretions from the body, tail and part of the pancreatic head through an orifice that is too small.

Complications during minimally invasive knee surgery.

J Orthop Traumatol

June 2007

Orthopaedics Department, City of Parma Hospital, Piazza Athos Maestri, I-43100, Parma, Italy.

Since their advent, minimally invasive surgical techniques have achieved good results in knee arthroplasty, earning the approval of many orthopaedic surgeons. The advantages offered by this type of surgery are the respect of the extensor system, early functional recovery and reduced pain. As always in surgery, in order to obtain such results, various problems have been tackled, some of which have now been overcome thanks to the new instruments that are better suited to restricted incisions, whereas others still cause significant complications.

Acta Radiol

November 2006

Department of Clinical Sciences, Section of Radiological Sciences, University of Parma, Parma Hospital, Parma, Italy.

Numerous cases of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) have been reported in the literature following closed chest injuries, due to post-traumatic dissection or thrombosis of a coronary artery. In the follow-up of AMI, wall thickness during diastole and systole provides important information on heart viability. Multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) is currently the only noninvasive instrumental investigation which provides an appreciable assessment of the coronary arteries, as well as heart wall thickness measurements.

Section of Radiological Sciences, Department of Clinical Sciences, University of Parma, Parma Hospital, Parma, Italy.

Despite the efforts that have been made at an international level to identify and control cardiovascular risk factors, cardiopathies and, in particular, coronary artery disease (CAD), remain the principal cause of death in Europe and the United States. These data confirm the importance and necessity of noninvasive, reliable diagnostic imaging of early CAD. Coronary angiography is still the hinge, around which all instrumental and laboratory investigations turn, for cardiac ischaemia today.

Role of surgical reduction of condylar fractures in the management of panfacial fractures.

Br J Oral Maxillofac Surg

October 2000

Department of Maxillofacial Surgery, Parma Hospital, Parma, Italy.

We present nine panfacial fractures that were treated during a two-year period in which the first step in treatment was reduction of condylar fractures. There was no evidence of dental or skeletal alterations and measurement of the mandibular ramus and radiographic examination show that posterior facial height as well as projection and width of the inferior lower third of the face, was restored. The correct timing of surgical intervention and the use of rigid fixation allows the restoration of the morphological and functional nature of the face after panfacial fractures.
