The development of innovative nanosystems opens new perspectives for multidisciplinary applications at the frontier between materials science and nanomedicine. Here we present a novel hybrid nanosystem based on cytocompatible inorganic SiC/SiOx core/shell nanowires conjugated via click-chemistry procedures with an organic photosensitizer, a tetracarboxyphenyl porphyrin derivative. We show that this nanosystem is an efficient source of singlet oxygen for cell oxidative stress when irradiated with 6 MV X-Rays at low doses (0.

Background: The aim of this study was to compare 7-year rates of all-cause death, cardiac death, myocardial infarction, target vessel revascularization, and stroke in a large cohort of octogenarians with left main coronary artery or multivessel disease, treated with coronary artery bypass grafting or percutaneous coronary intervention.
Methods: Two propensity score-matched cohorts of patients undergoing revascularization procedures at regional public and private centers of Emilia-Romagna, Italy, from July 2002 to December 2008 were used to compare long-term outcomes of percutaneous coronary intervention (947 patients) and coronary artery bypass grafting (441 patients).
Results: There were no significant differences between groups in 30-day mortality.

Myocardial infarction (MI), a leading cause of death around the world, displays a complex pattern of inheritance. When MI occurs early in life, genetic inheritance is a major component to risk. Previously, rare mutations in low-density lipoprotein (LDL) genes have been shown to contribute to MI risk in individual families, whereas common variants at more than 45 loci have been associated with MI risk in the population.

Background: The management of acute calculous cholecystitis still offers room for debate in terms of diagnosis, severity scores, treatment options and timing for surgery.
Material And Methods: A systematic review about the treatment of acute cholecystitis has been completed. The recommendations of recent guidelines have also been examined taking into account the results of the review.

Skin and soft tissue infections (SSTIs) encompass a variety of pathological conditions ranging from simple superficial infections to severe necrotizing soft tissue infections. Necrotizing soft tissue infections (NSTIs) are potentially life-threatening infections of any layer of the soft tissue compartment associated with widespread necrosis and systemic toxicity. Successful management of NSTIs involves prompt recognition, timely surgical debridement or drainage, resuscitation and appropriate antibiotic therapy.

Introduction: The Tailgut cyst (cystic hamartoma) is an uncommon congenital disease of presacral retrorectal space and is embryologically part of some forms of enteric cysts. It is a benign malformation, although cases have been described in neoplastic degeneration.
Presentation Of Case: A caucasian 24 year old female presented shortly after childbirth with hypogastric abdominal discomfort associated with rectal tenderness, bleeding and moderate urinary symptoms for about three weeks.

Objectives: There are limited reliable data on the long-term survival of patients operated upon with double-valve surgery (DVS) in the literature. In this study, in-hospital mortality and 5-year survival were determined and the potential risk factors for increased mortality were identified and discussed.
Methods: This is a report of an observational retrospective study of 1167 patients undergoing concomitant aortic and mitral valve surgery from 2002 to 2011.

Background: Citrate has anticoagulative properties and favorable effects on inflammation, but it has the potential hazards of inducing hypocalcemia. Bicarbonate dialysate (BHD) replacing citrate for acetate is now used in chronic haemodialysis but has never been tested in postdilution online haemodiafiltration (OL-HDF).
Methods: Thirteen chronic stable dialysis patients were enrolled in a pilot, short-term study.

One of the main problems in transplant surgery is the preservation of the organ during the cold ischemic time. The interrupted blood supply triggers a cascade of biological modifications resulting in cell death, which predisposes to discharge of a large quantity of toxic metabolites at the moment of organ reperfusion. Many approaches have been studied to prevent the toxic processes.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to analyse factors predicting the diagnostic accuracy of computed tomography (CT)-guided transthoracic fine-needle aspiration (TTFNA) for solid noncalcified, subsolid and mixed pulmonary nodules, with particular attention to those responsible for false negative results with a view to suggesting a method for their correction.
Materials And Methods: From January 2007 to March 2010, we retrospectively reviewed the CT images of 198 patients of both sexes (124 males and 74 females; mean age, 70 years; range age, 44-90) used for the guidance of TTFNA of pulmonary nodules. Aspects considered were: lesion size and density, distance from the pleura, and lesion site.

Background And Aim Of The Work: Displaced acetabular fractures are complex lesions which may cause severe consequences if not appropriately treated. The results are linked to the quality of the articular reduction. Anatomical reduction, through surgical treatment with rigid internal fixation, should be considered to obtain an early mobilization, reduce long term osteoarthritis evolution and make the acetabular cavity suitable to eventually recive a total hip prosthesis.

Cleaning and disinfection of the root canal system are some of the most important goals in endodontic therapy. The aim of this preliminary study is to assess the effectiveness of Er:YAG laser fiber in removing the smear layer produced during root canal walls instrumentation. Forty-eight single-rooted teeth were prepared with manual and rotary Ni-Ti instruments, in addition to 2.

The aim of this study was to assess outcomes following open reduction and internal fixation in complex fractures of the distal humerus. Between 2000 and 2006, 34 patients were operated for complex fractures of the distal humerus. Bone fixation was obtained with a reverse Y-shaped reconstruction plate in 13 cases and with double plating in 21 cases.

The persistent hypoglossal artery is a rare perseverance of an embryonic vessel connecting the anterior and posterior circulations and is generally considered an incidental finding. This report describes a patient with a basilar dependence on a persistent hypoglossal artery visualized at CT angiography. The pertinent findings and clinical implications of this anomalous vessel are discussed.

Tibial plateau fractures are complex injuries which, if not adequately treated, can lead to invalidating sequelae. They constitute on average about 1% of all fractures, and up to 8% in patients over 65 years, and can be caused by both high- and low-energy trauma. Unlike in younger subjects, treatment of tibial plateau fractures in the elderly is not univocal and depends on the patient's functional needs, bone quality and systemic comorbidities.

The presence in the serum of specific autoantibodies, such as antinuclear antibodies (ANA), anti-double-stranded DNA (anti-dsDNA), and antiextractable nuclear antigens (anti-ENA), is one of the diagnostic criteria for autoimmune rheumatic disease, and the requests for these tests in the last few years have grown remarkably. A guideline for reducing clinically inappropriate requests in autoantibody testing (ANA, anti-dsDNA, anti-ENA) has been applied in the Parma Hospital since 2007. The results for the period January-December 2007 were compared to those of the previous period January-December 2006, and a significant reduction in the number of anti-dsDNA (23.

We describe a case of listerial rhombencephalitis in a previously healthy 37-year-old woman. The diagnosis was based on the clinical findings, results of cerebrospinal fluid analysis, blood culture and MR imaging. The specific treatment was started after culture results were available, and the patient made a full clinical recovery.
