The 2023 American Burn Association Research and Advocacy Summit: Our Roadmap.

Research is one of the American Burn Association's (ABA) strategic priorities. Advocacy is required not only to promote burn research, but also, the ABA's other strategic priorities (Prevention, Quality, and Education). The ABA convened a two-day Research and Advocacy (R&A) Summit in September 2023, to develop a roadmap for the organization's research and advocacy efforts.

A National Mandate for Thermal Fuses for Home Oxygen Users is Cost-Effective in the Prevention of Burn Morbidity, Mortality, and Property Loss.

Smoking while using home oxygen leads to explosions, which cause cutaneous burns, death, and loss of property. Thermal fuses interrupt the propagation of ignited oxygen lines and reduce the risk of injury. Prior to mandating thermal fuses for all home oxygen users in the United States, cost-effectiveness analysis should be performed.

The risks of sedation and pain control during burn resuscitation: Increased opioids lead to over-resuscitation and hypotension.

Introduction: Pain management and sedation are necessary in severely burned persons. Balancing pain control, obtundation, and hemodynamic suppression can be challenging. We hypothesized that increased sedation during burn resuscitation is associated with increased intravenous fluid administration and hemodynamic instability.

Pilot randomized clinical trial of virtual reality pain management during adult burn dressing changes: Lessons learned.

Opioids are the most frequently used pain medications by US burn centers to control severe procedural pain during wound care. Concerns for long-term opioid use have prompted the exploration of non-pharmaceutical interventions, such as virtual reality (VR), for procedural pain management. The primary objective of this pilot study was to evaluate the feasibility and efficacy of VR pain alleviation treatment in reducing adult burn patients' perceived pain during burn dressing changes.

American Burn Association Strategic Quality Summit 2022: Setting the Direction for the Future.

The American Burn Association (ABA) hosted a Burn Care Strategic Quality Summit (SQS) in an ongoing effort to advance the quality of burn care. The goals of the SQS were to discuss and describe characteristics of quality burn care, identify goals for advancing burn care, and develop a roadmap to guide future endeavors while integrating current ABA quality programs. Forty multidisciplinary members attended the two-day event.
