During the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Methods Sub-Group of the WHO COVID-19 Social Science Research Roadmap Working Group conducted a rapid evidence review of rapid qualitative methods (RQMs) used during epidemics. The rapid review objectives were to (1) synthesize the development, implementation, and uses of RQMs, including the data collection tools, research questions, research capacities, analytical approaches, and strategies used to speed up data collection and analysis in their specific epidemic and institutional contexts; and (2) propose a tool for assessing and reporting RQMs in epidemics emergencies. The rapid review covered published RQMs used in articles and unpublished reports produced between 2015 and 2021 in five languages (English, Mandarin, French, Portuguese, and Spanish).

Eltrombopag has been previously shown to be effective in reversing azacitidine-mediated thrombocytopenia. This was further investigated in the SUPPORT trial, a phase III study assessing the efficacy/safety of eltrombopag plus azacitidine in patients with intermediate- to high-risk myelodysplastic syndromes and thrombocytopenia. The results did not support a clinical benefit for the addition of eltrombopag to azacitidine.

Metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) is a complex disorder that is implicated in dysregulations in multiple biological pathways, orchestrated by interactions between genetic predisposition, metabolic syndromes and environmental factors. The limited knowledge of its pathogenesis is one of the bottlenecks in the development of prognostic and therapeutic options for MAFLD. Moreover, the extent to which metabolic pathways are altered due to ongoing hepatic steatosis, inflammation and fibrosis and subsequent liver damage remains unclear.

Despite widespread investigation into the incidence of acute myocardial infarction during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic and associated lockdown, no study has examined the situation's impact on blood pressure (BP) levels. Measurements of BP and heart rate (HR) were obtained from persons living in the Paris urban area using connected home BP monitors (accessible to patients and health providers through a secured server). Three time periods of e-health recordings were compared: during the pandemic before the lockdown, during the lockdown, and the same time period in 2019.

Ultraviolet disinfection robots to improve hospital cleaning: Real promise or just a gimmick?

Antimicrob Resist Infect Control

February 2021

Department of Infection Control and Hospital Epidemiology, Medical University of Vienna, Waehringer Guertel 18-20, 1090, Vienna, Austria.

The global COVID-19 pandemic due to the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 has challenged the availability of traditional surface disinfectants. It has also stimulated the production of ultraviolet-disinfection robots by companies and institutions. These robots are increasingly advocated as a simple solution for the immediate disinfection of rooms and spaces of all surfaces in one process and as such they seem attractive to hospital management, also because of automation and apparent cost savings by reducing cleaning staff.

Laboratoire de Transfert des Leucémies, EA3518, Institut de Recherche Saint Louis, University of Paris, Paris, France; Hematology Department, Hôpital Avicenne (Assistance Publique-Hôpitaux de Paris and University Paris XIII), Bobigny, France. Electronic address:

Patients with FLT3-ITD mutated (FLT3-ITD+) Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML), have frequently relapsed or refractory disease and FLT3-ITD+ inhibitors have limited efficacy. Rho kinases (ROCK) are constitutively activated by FLT3-ITD+ in AML via PI3 kinase and Rho GTPase. Upon activation by ROCK, LIM kinases (LIMK) inactivate cofilin by phosphorylation which affects cytoskeleton dynamics, cell growth and apoptosis.

Label Noise Cleaning with an Adaptive Ensemble Method Based on Noise Detection Metric.

Sensors (Basel)

November 2020

Laboratory of Information Processing and Transmission, L2TI, Institut Galilée, University Paris XIII, 93430 Paris, France.

Real-world datasets are often contaminated with label noise; labeling is not a clear-cut process and reliable methods tend to be expensive or time-consuming. Depending on the learning technique used, such label noise is potentially harmful, requiring an increased size of the training set, making the trained model more complex and more prone to overfitting and yielding less accurate prediction. This work proposes a cleaning technique called the ensemble method based on the noise detection metric (ENDM).

Introduction: While drug prescription should be based on established recommendations stemming from clinical trials but in pediatrics, many drugs are used without marketing authorization. Consequently recommendations are often based on clinical experience and the risk of inappropriate prescription (IP) is high. A tool for detecting IP in pediatrics-called POPI (Pediatrics: Omission of Prescriptions and Inappropriate prescriptions)-has been developed in France.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines how laparoscopic liver resection (LLR) affects the quality of surgical care and long-term outcomes for patients with early-stage hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).
  • Out of 425 patients studied, those who underwent LLR were more likely to achieve "textbook outcomes," indicating a higher quality of care compared to those who had open liver resections (OLR).
  • The results suggest that better surgical quality, associated with the laparoscopic method, leads to improved disease-free survival rates in HCC patients.
