Background & Aims: As life expectancy increases, an increasing older population may require surgery with perioperative nutritional management. While little is known about the combined effect of age and stress on amino acid metabolism during enteral nutrition, we hypothesized that blood amino acid bioavailability may be influenced not only by the characteristics of the ingested protein but also by intestinal ageing and splanchnic sequestration of amino acids. Plasma amino acid kinetics were thus evaluated in aged and adult rats receiving continuous enteral nutrition before and after standardized surgical stress.

Background: Improved therapeutic options are needed for patients with relapsed or relapsed and refractory multiple myeloma. Subcutaneous bortezomib has replaced intravenous bortezomib as it is associated with a more favourable toxicity profile. We investigated the activity and safety of three different dosing regimens of oral panobinostat in combination with subcutaneous bortezomib and oral dexamethasone for this indication.

Background & Aims: Dietary amino acid (AA) requirements increase after a surgical stress while the systemic AA availability from the diet decreases with age, due to splanchnic sequestration. While immune-enhancing diets (IEDs) have been recommended for the nutritional management of surgical patients, the systemic bioavailability of their AA supply has not been evaluated in elderly surgical patients. This was determined in surgically-stressed IED-fed aged rats.

Background: Dry eye disease (DED) is characterized by a loss of homeostasis of the tear film. It goes along with ocular symptoms, in which ocular surface inflammation and damage play etiological roles. High-mobility group box 1 protein (HMGB1) is a pro-inflammatory protein found in the tear fluid during conjunctivitis, blepharitis and DED.

Background: Liver transplantation (LT) is a high-risk surgery associated with significant hemodynamic changes requiring advanced hemodynamic monitoring. Pulmonary Artery Catheter (PAC) is still considered as a gold-standard for Cardiac Index (CI) measurement during LT despite association with an increased risk of complications. Noninvasive impedance cardiography (ICG) could be an interesting alternative tool for CI monitoring.

We aimed to study the association between three different methods of assessing the amount of amniotic fluid (subjective method (SM), deepest vertical pocket (DVP) and amniotic fluid index (AFI)) and estimated fetal weight (EFW) (in percentile or Z-score) after adjustment on maternal-fetal parameters. We performed a nationwide cross-sectional study through the French network of obstetric sonographers using the "flash" study method and including low-risk singleton pregnancies from 18-40 weeks. Crude and adjusted odds ratio were computed after stratification upon 2 and 3 trimester of pregnancy.

In the quest for personalized medicine, only a few biological parameters are routinely used to select patients prior to the initiation of anticancer targeted therapies, including mTOR inhibitors. Identifying biological factors that may predict efficacy or resistance to mTOR inhibitors represents an important challenge since rapalogs may exert antitumor effects through multiple mechanisms of action. Despite the fact that no such a factor is currently available, several molecular patterns are emerging, correlating with sensitivity and/or resistance to rapalogs.
