In the course of epizootological research on Lyme borreliosis in domestic and farm animals, the serological evidence for the occurrence of this zoonosis in cattle was screened. An ELISA showed that 25.2% of cattle from seven geographical areas in Slovakia were positive for anti-Borrelia IgG antibodies.

The karyotype of Acanthocephalus lucii(Müller, 1776), a parasite of perch, consists of six autosomal biarmed chromosomes and two subtelocentric sex X chromosomes in females or one X in males. The sex determining mechanism is of the XX-X0 type. Most of the acanthocephalans (85%) exhibit small supernumerary metacentric B chromosomes, the number of which varies from one to five.

Benzimidazole carbamates (mebendazole, albendazole and fenbendazole) are the most commonly used anthelmintic drugs for the treatment of larval toxocariasis (Toxocara canis) in paratenic hosts. However, the bioavailability of these drugs for tissues is very low due to their extremely low solubility, resulting in the administration of relatively high doses over a long period. To overcome this problem, neutral, negatively or positively charged and stabilized liposome drug carriers were examined in the chronic phase of T.

Spermiogenesis of the pseudophyllidean tapeworm Eubothrium crassum has been described by the aid of transmission electron microscopy for the first time. Initially, early spermatids form a distal cytoplasmic protrusion, a differentiation zone containing a small electron-dense, apically oriented region. Out of this region, two centrioles with rootlets develop.

The karyotype of a European bird nasal schistosome, Trichobilharzia regenti Horák, Kolárová et Dvofák, 1998, was determined. The chromosome set comprises eight pairs, seven of which are autosomes and one sex pair consisting of ZZ in males and ZW in females. The Z is the largest chromosome of the set, having a submeta-metacentric location of centromere, while the W is a small metacentric chromosome.

Variability in Echinococcus granulosus is very important epidemiologically since strain characteristics may influence local patterns of transmission of hydatid disease. To classify the genotype presented in pig protoscoleces of the Slovak territory, a DNA-based approach has been used. Nucleotide sequences for a 471 bp region of the mitochondrial NADH dehydrogenase 1 (ND1) gene revealed a substantial affinity of isolates examined to the G7 genotype.

The phagocytic ability of polymorphonuclear leukocytes, the metabolic activity of peritoneal macrophages, the proliferative response of T- and B-cells, and the production of specific anti-Toxocara antibodies were studied in paratenic hosts with experimental larval toxocarosis after treatment with the immunomodulator muramyldipeptide for 119 days. Peroral infection of mice with 2,500 Toxocara canis eggs partially reduced the numbers of cells and inhibited the activity of all cellular immune-response parameters studied. During most of the experiment the greatest suppression was recorded for the peritoneal-macrophage metabolic activity.
