Serological techniques are frequently used to detect parasite status and to monitor epidemiology and disease prevalence in important reservoir hosts of zoonotic diseases. Small mammals present the most important link in the epidemiological chain in the spread of trichinellosis. In experimental studies, high infective doses are used to provoke strong immune response of laboratory animals.

Five horse farms located in eastern Slovakia were investigated for the presence of benzimidazole-resistant strongyles by faecal egg count reduction test and egg hatch assay. Coprocultures were prepared for each farm from faecal samples taken pre- and post-treatment and harvested larvae were molecularly examined with a Reverse Line Blot assay. Faecal egg count reduction values ranged from 0 to 52.

In Slovakia, monitoring the prevalence of Trichinella spp. in wildlife was performed since 2000 in the main reservoir animals, the red fox (Vulpes vulpes) and wild boar (Sus scrofa), using artificial digestion method as recommended by International Commission on Trichinellosis. The results of investigation performed in 5270 red foxes showed that Trichinella infection is widespread across Slovakia and prevalence increased significantly from 4.

Neosporosis is considered to be a contributing risk factor for abortions in dairy cows and other farm animals and has negative economic impact on their breeding. In respect of the rapid spread of neosporosis in herds throughout the world, our aim was to detect the prevalence of anti-Neospora antibodies in cows post-abortion (PA) (PA Group n=716) and in cows without any reproduction problems (Control Group n=247) on large breeding farms from Eastern Slovakia. The overall mean seropositivity in PA Group (20.

Alveolar echinococcosis, caused by the metacestode Echinococcus multilocularis, is a zoonosis of public health significance. Apart from red foxes, other carnivore species can also serve as definitive hosts of this parasite. This study aimed to determine the occurrence of E.

Mesocestoides vogae tetrathyridia infection in mice causes hepatocyte injury, hepatic granulomatous inflammmation, liver fibrosis and chronic peritonitis manifested with portal hypertension. To reduce the detrimental effect of parasites on the host liver, the effect of the anthelmintic drug praziquantel (PZQ) in combination with natural products silymarin (an antioxidant) and beta-glucan (an immunomodulator) was investigated. The therapeutic effect of drugs was assessed by means of aminotransferase (alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST)) activities, content of albumin, total proteins and hyaluronic acid (HA) in sera of ICR mice infected with M.

Phylogenetic relationships of all genera of the order Caryophyllidea, possibly the earliest branching group of true tapeworms (Platyhelminthes: Eucestoda) and the only one that is monozoic, have been assessed for the first time. Results of this cladistic analysis, inferred from 30 unweighted morphological characters, are only partly congruent with the existing classification, which consists of four families based on the position of the inner longitudinal muscles in relation to the internal genital organs. Whereas all but five genera of the Caryophyllaeidae form a monophyletic clade, members of the Capingentidae are split, occurring within six unrelated groups.

Due to anaerobic conditions, low temperature, low C:N ratio and changes in physical and chemical properties of organic waste, less than 64% of A. suum eggs remained viable after 150 days of stabilisation.

Anthelmintic activity of benzimidazole carbamate anthelmintics is low against dormant Toxocara canis larvae during late infections in paratenic hosts. The present study was conducted to examine the efficacy of pure fenbendazole, or drug incorporated into sterically stabilized liposomes (SL-FBZ) administered to T. canis-infected mice alone and after its co-administration with the immunomodulator (1-->3)-beta-D-glucan against larvae localized in muscles and brains.

Comparisons were made during a course of infection and changes in both EHT and LDT were monitored to measure the correlation between resistance and susceptibility in different parasite stages (eggs and larvae). In addition, mixed doses of known numbers of susceptible and BZ-resistant H.

A detailed study was performed in five ecologically different regions of eastern Slovakia with more profound regard to eco-geographical and anthropogenic influences to natural fox habitat.
Material And Methods: In total of 689 red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) hunted in selected regions in 2005/2006 was examined using artificial digestion method.

Background: Trichinellosis is a zoonosis caused by nematode worms of the genus Trichinella and acquired through the consumption of raw or undercooked meat or meat products that harbour parasite larvae. The present report was designed to evaluate the course and circumstances surrounding the trichinellosis outbreak that occurred due to consumption of pork from a backyard pig in the southwest area of Slovakia in 2001.
Patients And Methods: Patients suspected of acquiring infection were serologically examined by ELISA, sera of patients with symptoms of clinical trichinellosis were additionally tested by Western Blot.

In Europe, spirochetes within the Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato complex are transmitted by Ixodes ricinus ticks. Specific associations are described between reservoir hosts and individual genospecies. We focused on green lizard (Lacerta viridis) as a host for ticks and potential host for borreliae.
