Stored ewe's milk lump cheese is a local product that can be a source of autochthonous beneficial microbiota, especially lactic acid bacteria. The aim of this study was to show the antimicrobial potential of LP17L/1 isolated from stored ewe's milk lump cheese. LP17L/1 is a non-hemolytic, non-biofilm-forming strain, susceptible to antibiotics.

Slovak ewe's milk lump cheese is produced from unpasteurized ewe's milk without any added culture. Because of the traditional processing and shaping by hand into a lump, this cheese was given the traditional specialty guaranteed (TSG) label. Seventeen staphylococci isolated from 54 Slovak local lump cheeses made from ewes' milk were taxonomically allotted to five species and three clusters/groups involving the following species: (5 strains), (3 strains), (one strain) (5 strains) and (3 strains). Five different species were determined. The aim of the study follows two lines: basic research in connection with staphylococci, and further possible application of the bacteriocins.

Better understanding of interactions among belowground and aboveground components in biotopes may improve our knowledge about soil ecosystem, and is necessary in environment assessment using indigenous soil organisms. In this study, we proposed that in disturbed biotopes, vegetation play important role in the buffering of contamination impact on soil communities and decrease the ecological pressure on soil biota. To assess the effects of these interactions we compared nematode communities, known for their bioindication abilities, from four types of disturbed and undisturbed biotopes (coniferous forest, permanent grassland, agricultural field, clearings), where the main stress agent was represented by long-term acidic industrial emissions containing heavy metals (As, Cd, Cu, and Pb).

In order to investigate the prevalence and life cycle of apicomplexan parasites, small mammals were live-trapped with modified Sherman traps in Southern Hungary between 2010 and 2012. The aim of this study was to evaluate the anticancer effect of atranorin (ATR) on murine 4T1 breast carcinoma cells and compare its sensitivity with normal mammary epithelial NMuMG cells in vitro. Anti-tumor and hepatoprotective activity of ATR-therapy was examined on mouse model of 4T1-induced cancer disease. ATR significantly reduced clonogenic ability of carcinoma 4T1 cells at the concentration of 75 μM, but clonogenicity of normal NMuMG cells was not affected by any of ATR concentrations tested.

Climate and environmental conditions in the Eastern Slovak Lowland are ideally suitable for the occurrence of vector-borne diseases. Ascaris roundworm isolates from Japan and central Europe were examined by sequencing analyses to better understand geographically induced nucleotide variation and genotype distribution according to host. Three well-supported clusters (denoted as A, B, C) were identified by generating cox1 sequences of mtDNA from these regions. Among 5 pig isolates collected in eastern Honshu, Japan, in 2010, 3 carried DNA characteristics for cluster A and 2 corresponded with the characteristics of cluster B.

Intrauterine embryonic development in the caryophyllidean tapeworm Khawia sinensis has been investigated using transmission electron microscopy and cytochemical staining with periodic acid-thiosemicarbazide-silver proteinate for glycogen. Contrary to previous light microscopy findings that reported the release of non-embryonated eggs of K. sinenesis to the external environment, the present study documents various stages of embryonation (ovoviviparity) within the intrauterine eggs of this cestode.

Spermiogenesis of the monozoic cestode Caryophyllaeus laticeps (Pallas, 1781) (Caryophyllidea: Caryophyllaeidae), a parasite of Abramis brama (Pisces: Cyprinidae), has been investigated by means of transmission electron microscopy and cytochemical staining with periodic acid-thiosemicarbazide-silver proteinate for glycogen. The process of spermatozoon formation corresponds in the basic pattern to that of Khawia armeniaca as described by Bruňanská and Poddubnaya (Parasitol Res 99:449-454, 2006). The dense material at the early stages of spermiogenesis, an intercentriolar body, the formation of a free flagellum and flagellar bud, the penetration of the nucleus into the spermatid body when the fusion of the free flagellum with the median cytoplasmic process has started, and a complete proximodistal fusion have been determined.

Tapeworms (Cestoda, Platyhelminthes) are a highly diversified group of parasites that can have significant veterinary importance as well as medical impact as disease agents of human alveococcosis, hydatidosis, taeniosis/cysticercosis/neurocysticercosis, hymenolepidosis or diphyllobothriasis. Because of their great diversity, there has been keen interest in their phylogenetic relationships to other obligate parasitic platyhelminthes, as well as within the group itself. Recent phylogenetic analyses of cestodes, however, have focused on morphological, molecular, life cycle, embryology and host-specificity features and conspicuously omitted inclusion of karyological data.

The invasive monozoic tapeworm Atractolytocestus huronensis, a specific parasite of common carp, was originally found and described in the North American continent. It has been introduced to Europe and reported in several countries in the last 15 years, as well. In the current study, tapeworms from one North American (USA) and five European localities (United Kingdom/UK, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, and Romania) were subjected to molecular analyses in order to determine the level of intrapopulation and intraspecific molecular variation and to assess interrelationships among American and European populations of the parasite.

The giant liver fluke, Fascioloides magna, a liver parasite of free-living and domestic ruminants of Europe and North America, was analysed in order to determine the origin of European populations and to reveal the biogeography of this originally North American parasite on the European continent. The variable fragments of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (cox1; 384bp) and nicotinamide dehydrogenase subunit I (nad1; 405bp) were used. Phylogenetic trees and haplotype networks were constructed and the level of genetic structuring was evaluated using population genetic tools.
