Ann Phys Rehabil Med

November 2024

Health and Social Research Center, University of Castilla La Mancha, Edificio Melchor Cano, Campus Universitario, s/n. 16071, Cuenca, Spain; Universidad Politécnica y Artística del Paraguay. 14 de Mayo. Asunción, Paraguay.

Background: Although aerobic training leads to physiological improvements in people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), measured by the VO2 peak, there is no evidence as to which type of physical exercise intervention is the most effective in improving the VO peak or max.

Objective: A network meta-analysis (NMA) was performed to determine the effects of different physical interventions on oxygen uptake in people with COPD.

Methods: A literature search was performed from database inception to February 2024.

Article Synopsis
  • Global childhood cancer survival rates vary based on regional factors, and understanding treatment decisions for advanced cancer in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) is essential.
  • A study involving pediatric oncologists in LMICs identified multiple contextual factors that influence decisions regarding treatment, including when non-curative options might be considered and how "poor prognosis" is defined.
  • Findings reveal that decision-making practices in LMICs are inconsistent and complicated, highlighting the need for clearer frameworks and further research on the preferences and challenges faced by healthcare professionals in these regions.

Hypertension is responsible for more than two million deaths due to cardiovascular disease annually in Latin America (LATAM), of which one million occurs before 70 years of age. Hypertension is the main risk factor for cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, affecting between 20 and 40% of LATAM adults. Since the publication of the 2017 LASH hypertension guidelines, reports from different LATAM countries have confirmed the burden of hypertension on cardiovascular disease events and mortality in the region.

Molecular Testing of Environmental Samples as a Potential Source to Estimate Parasite Infection.

Trop Med Infect Dis

September 2024

Escuela de Medicina, Universidad Internacional del Ecuador UIDE, Quito 170411, Ecuador.

We discuss the potential usefulness of molecular testing of soil, dust, and water samples to detect medically important parasites, and where such testing could be used to supplement stool sampling in humans. A wide variety of parasites including protozoa and helminths, many of which are zoonotic, have an important infection reservoir in the environment. In some cases, this environmental period is essential for further parasite development.

B Cell and Antibody Responses in Bovine Tuberculosis.

Antibodies (Basel)

October 2024

Instituto de Agrobiotecnología y Biología Molecular (IABIMO) INTA-CONICET, N. Repetto and De los Reseros, Hurlingham 1686, Buenos Aires, Argentina.

The development of vaccines and effective diagnostic methods for bovine tuberculosis requires an understanding of the immune response against its causative agent, . Although this disease is primarily investigated and diagnosed through the assessment of cell-mediated immunity, the role of B cells and antibodies in bovine tuberculosis has been relatively undervalued and understudied. Current evidence indicates that circulating -specific antibodies are not effective in controlling the disease.

[Rocabado-penning skull-cervical posture in orthodontic patients].

Rev Cient Odontol (Lima)

September 2024

Facultad de Odontología, Universidad Nacional de Concepción. Concepción, Universidad Nacional de Concepción Facultad de Odontología Universidad Nacional de Concepción Concepción Paraguay

Introduction: The standing balance of the skull on the spine in its cervical portion is a factor of consideration for the diagnosis of cranio-mandibular disorders and alterations in patients of all ages without distinction, that is, it is essential to conceive an accurate diagnosis in children and adults. However, over time, this element had not been taken into account in the differential diagnosis protocol, despite the fact that biomechanical alterations and dysfunctions in both hard and soft tissues are evidenced in a lateral skull teleradiography, essentially requested to initiate treatment.

Objective: To describe the cranio-cervical posture with the Rocabado-Penning analysis, in patients who come for consultation at the Instituto Latinoamericano de Estudios Superiores (ILES).

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) have been implicated in human disorders, from cancers to infectious diseases. Targeting miRNAs or their target genes with small molecules offers opportunities to modulate dysregulated cellular processes linked to diseases. Yet, predicting small molecules associated with miRNAs remains challenging due to the small size of small molecule-miRNA datasets.

Programa de Pós-Graduação em Geociências, Instituto de Geociências, Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil.

Osteohistological evidence is widely used to infer paleobiological traits of fossil vertebrates, such as ontogeny and growth rates. Mesosaurs, an enigmatic group of aquatic reptiles from the early Permian, are the most well-known Paleozoic amniotes from Africa and South America. Their fossils are abundant in South America, ranging from the central-west region of Brazil to the southernmost areas, as well as parts of Paraguay and Uruguay.

Neurorights in the Constitution: from neurotechnology to ethics and politics.

Philos Trans R Soc Lond B Biol Sci

December 2024

Psychiatry Department, Interdisciplinary Center for Neurosciences, Medicine School, Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, Diagonal Paraguay 362, Santiago de Chile 8330074, Chile.

Neuroimaging technologies such as brain-computer interfaces and neurofeedback have evolved rapidly as new tools for cognitive neuroscience and as potential clinical interventions. However, along with these developments, concern has grown based on the fear of the potential misuse of neurotechnology. In October 2021, Chile became the first country to include neurorights in its Constitution.

Mechanisms of brain self-regulation: psychological factors, mechanistic models and neural substrates.

Philos Trans R Soc Lond B Biol Sci

December 2024

Department of Physiology and Biophysics, Washington National Primate Research Center, University of Washington, Seattle, WA, USA.

While neurofeedback represents a promising tool for neuroscience and a brain self-regulation approach to psychological rehabilitation, the field faces several problems and challenges. Current research has shown great variability and even failure among human participants in learning to self-regulate target features of brain activity with neurofeedback. A better understanding of cognitive mechanisms, psychological factors and neural substrates underlying self-regulation might help improve neurofeedback's scientific and clinical practices.

Introduction: Minimally invasive surgery (MIS) has become standard of care in many high-income countries, but its adoption in low- and middle-income countries (LICs/MICs) has been impeded by resource- and training-related barriers. We hypothesized that trainees in MICs perform MIS procedures less often, and that as procedure complexity increases, the rate of MIS decreases.

Methods: A 22-question survey, distributed to representative leaders across Latin America, collected country-specific graduating trainee case requirements and volumes for four index procedures (cholecystectomy, appendectomy, inguinal hernia repair, colectomy) using MIS or open surgery (OS).

The eighth workshop of the Worldwide Network for Blood and Marrow Transplantation (WBMT) was held in Islamabad, Pakistan, from September 22 to 23, 2022, aiming to foster hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) activity in the World Health Organization (WHO) Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMRO). Participating countries, including Pakistan, Oman, Iran, and Saudi Arabia, reported increased HSCT in the last few years, whereas others from the EMRO and beyond, including Qatar, United Arab Emirates, Nepal, and Bangladesh, started HSCT recently and have developed HSCT programs with excellent results. During educational sessions and open dialog, participating teams and international experts from the WBMT shared their experience and discussed minimum essential requirements for establishing and expanding HSCT in emerging countries, indications for HSCT training and dissemination of knowledge, stem cell donor selection and safety, quality assurance in transplant centers, and the value and importance of transplant outcome databases.
