Purpose: There are limited data about the outcome of old intensive care (ICU) patients suffering from Covid-19 in the post-vaccination era. This study distinguishes the pre- and post-acute illness living conditions of ICU survivors from non-survivors.
Methods: This prospective international multicenter study included 642 old (≥ 70 years) ICU patients, including data ranging from pre-illness condition to functional 90-days follow-up.

Purpose: To collect and analyze radiation dose-related data as part of international cooperation; to define diagnostic reference levels (DRL) for 24 X-ray projections in plain radiography (DX) considering anatomical region, clinical task, and procedural technique; and to harmonize the exposure practice across country borders.
Methods: A multicenter study was performed in Austria, Germany, Italy, and Switzerland in 2022-23 to provide dose-related data. Healthcare facilities were asked to provide processed data from their dose management systems.

Objective: Emergency surgery for acute bowel obstruction (ABO) is a common and occasionally technically demanding procedure, requiring both surgical skill and strategic planning. The risk entailed in teaching residents during ABO surgery has not been defined or investigated in detail to date. It is the aim of this study to reveal whether surgery for ABO, performed by resident surgeons under supervision, is safe and feasible.

Introduction: Many extremely small preterm infants need to be intubated and mechanically ventilated during their intensive care stay. Animal studies indicate that lung compliance can deteriorate rapidly under conventional ventilation. This study investigated whether this presumed deterioration in compliance actually occurs in extremely small preterm infants.

Lesional focal epilepsy (LFE) is a common and severe seizure disorder caused by epileptogenic lesions, including malformations of cortical development (MCD) and low-grade epilepsy-associated tumors (LEAT). Understanding the genetic etiology of these lesions can inform medical and surgical treatment. We conducted a somatic variant enrichment mega-analysis in brain tissue from 1386 individuals who underwent epilepsy surgery, including 599 previously unpublished individuals with ultra-deep ( > 1600x) targeted panel sequencing.

Background: Endovascular thrombectomy (EVT) is the standard of care for patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS) and intracranial vessel occlusion. Tandem occlusions (TO) comprise 20% of all anterior circulation AIS and are related to a poorer prognosis. The optimal EVT treatment strategy remains controversial.

Introduction: Platelet function testing using serial VerifyNow P2Y12 platelet reactivity units (PRUs) is established for guiding clopidogrel antiplatelet therapy in cerebral aneurysm stenting procedures. However, for ticagrelor, the impact of serial PRU testing and the identification of safe PRU ranges remains unexplored.
Methods: Flow diversion stenting ( = 232) and stent-assisted coiling procedures ( = 83) performed 05/2017-12/2021 were reviewed.

Heart failure (HF) remains a major therapeutic and diagnostic challenge nowadays. Albeit, acute decompensated HF is associated with several clinical signs such as dyspnea or edema, it remains a challenge to use easy accessible and suitable tools, such as biomarkers, to distinguish between patients at risk for an acute decompensation of their heart failure and compensated, stable HF patients. Existing biomarkers, such as natriuretic peptides or troponin, are not specific and can be elevated due to several other disease conditions, such as myocardial infarction, atrial fibrillation, or valve diseases.

SARS-CoV-2 infection can lead to a potentially life-threatening condition known as SARS-CoV-2-associated multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C), which differs from the severe lung disease and thrombotic complications commonly seen in adults. Recently, similar cases have been identified in adults, characterized by a clinical multisystem inflammatory syndrome referred to as MIS-A, which can emerge as a late and severe complication of SARS-CoV-2 infection. We report two cases of MIS-A that were recently admitted to our hospital.

Infective endocarditis (IE) poses significant challenges in cardiovascular medicine, often necessitating valvular surgery to manage severe complications. Postoperative acute kidney injury (AKI) is a notable complication affecting patient outcomes. While clinical and procedural factors have been well studied, the role of radiological renal artery parameters in AKI risk remains underexplored.

: Primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) is associated with normal or elevated calcium levels and affects bone mineral density. The proportion of cases predisposed to metabolic bone disease is unknown in patients with PHPT. The aim of this study was to assess bone mineral density and bone quality in patients with normo- or hypercalcemic primary hyperparathyroidism undergoing baseline parathyroid gland assessment with [F]fluorocholine PET/CT imaging.
