Purpose: Corneal tumors are rare in clinical practice. There was a paucity of data on the incidence of various corneal tumors, their clinical and pathological features and surgical management, especially on large patient samples.
Methods: The medical records of 39 patients with corneal tumors referred to Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center, Sun Yat-sen University, China from Jan 1,1996 to Dec 31,2002 were reviewed retrospectively.

Context: Ethyl chloride (EC) is a fast-acting vapo-coolant spray that provides rapid, transient, local analgesia for minor invasive procedures. Although the application of EC has decreased, it can be used as a cryoanalgesic agent in minor surgical procedures.
Objective: Despite the widespread use of EC as a local anesthetic, there are few reported cases of serious adverse side effects.

Purpose: The conjunctiva maintains the health of the ocular surface by protecting the eye from pathogen invasion, injury, and dryness. In this study, we investigated the regulation of hyaluronan (HA) synthesis by cytokines in conjunctiva-derived cells.
Methods: Cultured primary cells derived from human conjunctivas that had been removed as surgical specimens were transfected with an immortalizing gene (human papilloma virus 16 E6/E7).

Eyelid margin papillomas are challenging because complete excision may be cosmetically unacceptable. Interferon has been previously reported as an effective treatment for conjunctival papillomas. We report successful treatment of a large upper eyelid margin papilloma with intralesional interferon.

Papillomas and squamous cell carcinomas are the most common conjunctival and eyelid lesions. The etiology is still unclear and recently human papillomavirus infection and p53 gene mutation have been taken into consideration. The aim of our study was the evaluation of HPV DNApresence and p53 gene mutation in 45 benign and 38 malignant squamous lesions of the conjunctiva and eyelid.

IgG4-related sclerosing disease was first identified and defined in the twenty-first century. In this pathology, the serum IgG4 level increases and IgG4-positive plasma cells and lymphocytes infiltrate organs such as the pancreas, salivary glands, lacrimal glands, kidneys, and the retroperitoneum. Presented in this report is a case of IgG4-related sclerosing disease that occurred in the breast and was treated successfully with steroid therapy.

This study used the rodent Mastomys coucha latently infected with Mastomys natalensis papillomavirus (MnPV) and Mastomys coucha PV2 (McPV2), which induce skin papillomas and anogenital condylomas, respectively, to investigate PV antibody responses as serological markers during pathogenesis. In a case-control study (137 animals), virus and tumour prevalence correlated with the seroresponse against the early E2 and late L1 viral proteins. A prospective study (53 animals) revealed for the first time the course of these antibody responses during all stages of a natural PV infection.

The work assessment is to analyze eyelid tumors diagnosed in the last years in our hospital. We found 471 tumoral and pseudotumoral cases, in which malignant tumors predominated, with 255 cases. The most affected age range was the sixth decade and the majority of tumors were located to lower eyelid.

Seborrheic keratosis is a benign epithelial neoplasia that occurs mainly in the skin of the eyelids and face. We describe a case of seborrheic keratosis of the conjunctiva confirmed by histopathology. A 72-year-old man presented with a recurrent conjunctival mass involving the nasal side of his right eye.

Absorbable plugs are used before attempting permanent occlusion to observe whether the patient will be amenable to treatment for dry eye. Little is known about the complications of absorbable plugs. The authors present a case of canaliculitis with a papilloma-like mass caused by long-standing unabsorbed collagen plug that had been placed 3 years earlier.

Multiple renal tumors of diverse morphology are rare and typically seen in Birt-Hogg-Dubé syndrome. Birt-Hogg-Dubé syndrome is a rare inherited cancer syndrome caused by a germline mutation in the folliculin (FLCN) gene, but the genetic causes for histologic diversity of renal tumors in Birt-Hogg-Dubé syndrome have not been elucidated. We describe here a 64-year-old man with a novel germline mutation in the FLCN gene who presented with 3 phenotypically distinct renal tumors in the same kidney, which were histologically classified as oncocytoma (1.

Eyelid tumors are the most common neoplasm in daily ophthalmology practice and encompass a wide variety of benign and malignant tumors. In this retrospective study, we report the clinical and histological features of 5504 eyelid skin tumors diagnosed at the Laboratory of Ophthalmopathology of the Hôpital Ophtalmique Jules Gonin, Lausanne, Switzerland, between January 1989 and December 2007. Benign tumors largely predominated over malignant ones, representing 84% of cases in this series, and the 5 most frequent subtypes were squamous cell papilloma (26%), seborrheic keratosis (21%), melanocytic nevus (20%), hidrocystoma (8%), and xanthoma/xanthelasma (6%).

Papillomavirus infections are responsible for plaques and papillomas in various locations on the skin and in mucous membranes. The aim of this report was to describe morphologic features of a viral pigmented conjunctival plaque and 2 conjunctival squamous papillomas in 3 dogs, and to investigate these lesions for the presence of papillomavirus DNA by polymerase chain reaction (PCR), DNA sequence analysis, and in situ hydridization (ISH). Histopathology revealed in all neoplasms various degrees of epithelial hyperplasia, acanthosis, and hyperkeratosis with koilocytosis.

Purpose: To give the long-term success rates of punctal dilatation with insertion of perforated punctal plugs (PPP) for the management of acquired punctal stenosis.
Methods: A series of 44 eyes of 26 patients who underwent PPP implantation for the management of acquired punctal stenosis were retrospectively evaluated in terms of the severity of acquired punctal stenosis, associated eyelid disorders, implantation technique of PPP, and long-term success rate of PPP for the treatment of epiphora. In all patients, punctal dilation was performed prior to the insertion of plugs.

Given the fact that infectious agents contribute to around 18% of human cancers worldwide, it would seem prudent to explore their role in neoplasms of the ocular adnexa: primary malignancies of the conjunctiva, lacrimal glands, eyelids, and orbit. By elucidating the mechanisms by which infectious agents contribute to oncogenesis, the management, treatment, and prevention of these neoplasms may one day parallel what is already in place for cancers such as cervical cancer, hepatocellular carcinoma, gastric mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma and gastric adenocarcinoma. Antibiotic treatment and vaccines against infectious agents may herald a future with a curtailed role for traditional therapies of surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy.

Aim: To elucidate the putative role of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection in pterygium and conjunctival papilloma.
Methods: Hybrid capture II (HC-II) and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays were performed to detect HPV in pterygium (42 samples obtained from 40 patients) and conjunctival papilloma (8 samples from 6 patients). The amount of HPV DNA was evaluated by measurement of relative light units (RLUs) on a luminometer.
