Article Synopsis
  • - Large cell acanthoma (LCA) is a rarely diagnosed skin lesion characterized by oversized keratinocytes, usually found on sun-exposed areas, with few cases reported in eyelid and conjunctival tissues.
  • - This report discusses the third known case of conjunctival LCA, presenting the first clinical photograph that showcases its distinct leukoplakic appearance and emphasizes its well-defined edges.
  • - The study highlights the potential for recurrence after surgical removal and the risk of squamous dysplastic transformation, while also indicating that specific immunohistochemical markers may aid in diagnosing conjunctival LCA more effectively in the future.

Article Synopsis
  • A 63-year-old man developed a painless swelling in his left eyelid, leading to a diagnosis of a unique sebaceous papilloma found through a biopsy, which exhibited benign characteristics.
  • The tumor was associated with Meibomian gland duct epithelium and showed a loss of the MSH6 protein, suggesting a possible link to a rare variant of Muir-Torre syndrome.
  • Genetic testing in similar cases is needed to determine whether the mutations are germline or somatic, helping to understand the relationship between the tumor and Muir-Torre syndrome.

Canine papillomavirus types 1 and 2 in classical papillomas: High abundance, different morphological associations and frequent co-infections.

Vet J

August 2019

Department of Biomedical Sciences, Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine, Tufts University, North Grafton, MA 01536, USA.

Canine papillomatosis is mainly attributed to papillomavirus infections. Papillomavirus DNA is also frequently identified in healthy skin, and evidence of high papillomavirus diversity complicates this simplistic view of causality. The aim of this study was to determine how frequently canine papillomas contain papillomavirus DNA and express viral protein, and how these factors correlate to the histology and anatomic location.

Sinonasal papillomas, also known as Schneiderian papillomas, are benign but infiltrative epithelial neoplasms that arise from ectodermally derived pseudostratified ciliated (or Schneiderian) epithelium that lines the sinonasal tract and nasal cavity. We describe a rare case of a sinonasal papilloma confined to the lacrimal duct and sac in a 45-year-old man who presented with 10 months of right-sided epiphora and swelling of his medial right lower eyelid. He was found to have a 10 × 10 mm area of distension near the right lacrimal sac and underwent an external dacryocystorhinostomy.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection has been implicated as a primary cause of lesions in the anogenital region, skin, oropharynx and respiratory tract. Additionally, the role of HPV in the pathogenesis of ocular surface disease has also been extensively studied. Conjunctival papilloma development has been strongly associated with the HPV infection of certain subtypes.

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) causes impairment to the human immune system which leads to immunocompromised conditions, including ocular complications. Several important HIV-associated disorders may involve the anterior segment, ocular surface, and adnexae organ such as dry eye, blepharitis which reduce quality of life of patients. In present, potent antiretroviral therapies HAART (highly active antiretroviral therapy) has improved the length and quality of life which may lead to an increased prevalence of anterior segment ocular disorders.
