Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to explore the link between high-risk human papilloma virus (HR-HPV) and ocular surface squamous cell neoplasia (OSSN), focusing on other potential risk factors like sun exposure and tobacco use.
  • Researchers analyzed DNA from 22 OSSN tissue samples and 22 control samples to identify HPV presence and other demographic factors.
  • Results indicated a significant association between HR-HPV and OSSN, with HR-HPV found in 40.9% of OSSN cases compared to just 4.5% in controls, highlighting HR-HPV as a potential cause of OSSN development.

The conjunctiva is a thin and delicate mucous membrane lining the inner eyelid and the anterior surface of the eyeball. Although hyperplastic changes can occur due to nonspecific chronic inflammation, 'conjunctival epithelial hyperplasia' has not been sufficiently established as a pathological entity. Additionally, the immunohistochemical (IHC) features of both the intact conjunctiva epithelium and conjunctival epithelial hyperplasia have not been sufficiently evaluated.

Endocrine Mucin-Producing Sweat Gland Carcinoma: Emerging Evidence of Multicentric Cutaneous Origin and Occasional Concurrence With Analogous Breast Tumors.

Am J Dermatopathol

May 2022

Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, Queen Elizabeth II Health Sciences, Nova Scotia Health (Central Zone), Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada ; and.

Introduction: Endocrine mucin-producing sweat gland carcinoma (EMPSGC) is a low-grade carcinoma with predilection for the eyelid. It is analogous to solid papillary carcinoma of the breast with both expressing neuroendocrine markers and the potential to progress to invasive mucinous carcinoma (IMC). Although over 80 cases of EMPSGC have been reported, few multicentric cases have been described in the literature.

Corneal dellen appeared as a complication after perilimbal conjunctival papilloma dissection in a six-year-old patient. Our purpose was to describe the use of plasma rich in growth factors (PRGF) fibrin membrane in covering the corneal defect after conventional medical treatment failure. PRGF fibrin membrane is an interesting therapeutical option to consider not only in adult patients, but also in children.

Background The majority of eyelid tumours are benign in nature and constitute 82%-98% of all eyelid tumours. This study aimed to explore the prevalence and frequency of histopathological diagnoses of eyelid tumours encountered in Hospital Sultanah Bahiyah (HSB), Malaysia, from 2016 to 2020. Method This study is a case series of 136 patients with eyelid tumours who underwent eyelid biopsy.

Introduction: The role of the eyelids is to protect and moisturise the eye. Despite its small relative surface area, 5-10% of skin cancers originate in the eyelids.

Aim: To assess the prevalence of different types of skin lesions in the area of eyelids based on retrospective histopathology data from a tertiary centre.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of histopathologically confirmed ocular surface squamous neoplasia (OSSN) in clinically diagnosed pterygium samples at a tertiary center in Northern California, over a 10-year period (2009-2019).

Methods: A retrospective chart review of patients older than 18 years with clinically diagnosed benign pterygium requiring excision was conducted. Clinically suspected pterygia were excised using standard techniques and routinely submitted to the University of California Davis for pathologic evaluation.

Human papillomaviruses (HPV) are a large group of DNA viruses that infect the basal cells of the stratified epithelium at different anatomic locations. In the ocular adnexal region, the mucosa of the conjunctiva and the lacrimal drainage system, as well as the eyelid skin, are potential locations for HPV-related neoplasia. The role of HPV in squamous cell neoplasia of the ocular adnexa has been debated for several decades.

Conjunctival papillomas are common tumors that exhibit an exophytic growth pattern, comprised of multiple filiform fronds of squamous epithelium that contain fibrovascular cores. The inverted (endophytic) variety of papilloma, often termed "Schneiderian," rarely occurs on the conjunctiva, with only 15 cases reported to date. Endophytic and exophytic papillomas are well described arising in the sinonasal Schneiderian epithelium where a low rate of malignant transformation may occur in the endophytic type; malignant transformation in exophytic sinonasal papillomas is exceedingly rare.

Oncocytoma of the eyelid is a rare neoplasm. Oncocytoma associated with an ocular surface squamous neoplasm, namely conjunctival intraepithelial neoplasia, is very hard to find in the literature. Herein we report a case of a 53-year-old male who presented with a swelling in the right lower lid over the last 6 years, along with a growth in the conjunctiva of the same eye for the last 2 years and encroaching upon the cornea for the last 4 months.

Ets homologous factor (EHF) is a member of the epithelial-specific Ets (ESE) family of transcription factors. To investigate its role in development and epithelial homeostasis, we generated a series of novel mouse strains in which the Ets DNA-binding domain of Ehf was deleted in all tissues (Ehf-/-) or specifically in the gut epithelium. Ehf-/- mice were born at the expected Mendelian ratio, but showed reduced body weight gain, and developed a series of pathologies requiring most Ehf-/- mice to reach an ethical endpoint before reaching 1 year of age.

Article Synopsis
  • SARS-CoV-2 utilizes ACE2 and other proteins for entering cells, raising questions about its potential transmission through the eye.
  • A study analyzed 38 conjunctival samples to determine the expression of ACE2 and its cofactors using RNA sequencing and immunohistochemistry.
  • The findings revealed low expression levels of ACE2 and related proteins, suggesting that conjunctival infection with SARS-CoV-2 is unlikely through these pathways.

Squamous cell papilloma (SCP) is generally a human papillomavirus (HPV) induced exophytic or endophytic proliferation on the surface of the skin, oral cavity, larynx, esophagus, cervix, vagina, and anal canal. The endophytic type SCP can cause differential diagnostic difficulties with keratoacanthoma, inverted follicular keratosis, and squamous cell carcinoma; however, these lesions are not associated with HPV infection. The authors present a female patient who noticed an extremely rapidly growing tumor destructing the left lower eyelid.
