Beyond the "Dominant" and "Recessive" Patterns of Inheritance.

This study aimed to investigate whether genes with different modes of inheritance differ in the presence of promoter-enriched CGI loci. For each autosomal chromosome, the author searched for variations in the total number of diseases' phenotypes with autosomal dominant (AD) and recessive (AR) inheritance for a list of promoter-poor CGI (CGI-) and promoter-enriched CGI (CGI+) genes using the OMIM database. Then, the CGI- and CGI+ genes displaying random allelic or bi-allelic expression were examined.

Renal survival and treatment of adult patients with Primary Focal Segmental glomerulosclerosis: A historical cohort study of the National Greek Registry.

Background/objective: Primary Focal and Segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) is one of the most common causes of idiopathic nephrotic syndrome. Our aim was to describe a large cohort of patients with primary FSGS, identify risk factors associated with worse renal survival and assess the impact of different immunosuppressive regiments on renal survival.

Methods: This was a historical cohort study of adults who were diagnosed with primary FSGS from March 26, 1982, to September 16, 2020.

Bilateral Ureteral Obstruction in Children With Ulcerative Colitis and Oliguria: When and Why?

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is an inflammatory clinical entity with many extraintestinal symptoms, including urinary tract manifestations. However, the bilateral ureteral obstruction is extremely rare. We report a case of bilateral ureteral obstruction in a 12-year-old male patient with ulcerative colitis (UC).

Evaluating Malnutrition Practices and Mother's Education on Children Failure to Thrive Symptoms Using Entropy-Weight and TOPSIS Method.

Background/objectives: Failure to thrive (FTT) is mostly caused by insufficient consumption of nutrient-rich food, recurrent infections like diarrhea and intestinal worms, substandard caregiving practices, and limited availability of health and other vital services. Furthermore, there was a correlation between the educational level of mothers and the occurrence of FTT in children aged 6-12 months. Thus, the objective of the current research is twofold: (i) to investigate other factors related to FTT and (ii) to evaluate the impact of them on FTT in Sub-Saharan African countries and their urban areas.

Platelet-Rich Therapies in Hernia Repair: A Comprehensive Review of the Impact of Platelet Concentrates on Mesh Integration in Hernia Management.

Mesh-augmented hernia repair is the gold standard in abdominal wall and hiatal/diaphragmatic hernia management and ranks among the most common procedures performed by general surgeons. Is there sufficient evidence to support the use of antibiotic holiday just before the second stage of an infected total hip or knee arthroplasty revision surgery?

The practice of implementing an antibiotic holiday before the second stage of hip or knee arthroplasty is currently controversial due to limited evidence for this approach, as per the International Consensus Meeting 2018 on Musculoskeletal Infection. A greater understanding of this issue could augment the quality of Alrayes and Sukeik's mini-review (2023) on diagnosing, managing, and treating periprosthetic knee infections. However, a significant lack of literature exists concerning the optimal duration for the antibiotic holiday, calling for more research before establishing any clinical guidelines.

Sonographic vascularity indices' study in ectopic pregnancies, after methotrexate treatment.

Objectives: Ectopic pregnancy is a crucial problem in Gynaecology. Previous studies concerning the medical treatment of ectopic pregnancies, have used only β-hCG (beta- human chorionic gonadotropin) values, to monitor the successful response to treatment. The current study was a PhD (Doctorate of Philosophy) thesis research, which has evaluated the vascularity indices' changes.

Reporting Quality and Risk of Bias Analysis of Published RCTs Assessing Anti-CGRP Monoclonal Antibodies in Migraine Prophylaxis: A Systematic Review.

Phase II/III randomized clinical trials (RCTs) are vulnerable to many types of bias beyond randomization. Insights into the reporting quality of RCTs involving migraine patients treated with monoclonal antibodies targeting the calcitonin gene-related peptide system (anti-CGRP MAbs) are currently lacking. Our aim was to analyze the reporting quality of phase II/III RCTs involving migraine patients treated with anti-CGRP MAbs.

Nurturing Infants to Prevent Atopic Dermatitis and Food Allergies: A Longitudinal Study.

Background: Atopic dermatitis (AD) at a young age often precedes the development of food allergies. Although AD affects millions of infants worldwide, prenatal and postnatal risk factors, and their association with the development of food allergies later on, are not fully elucidated. This study seeks to investigate AD epidemiology in infancy and its risk factors, examining early-life factors (both prenatal and postnatal) that could contribute to the later development of food allergies.

Laparoscopic-Assisted Anorectoplasty for Anorectal Malformation With Recto-Prostatic Urethral Fistula: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Congenital recto-urethral fistula is the most common form of anorectal malformation found in boys. The final repair includes the ligation of the fistula and the anorectoplasty, and can be achieved either way: posterior sagitally or laparoscopically. We present a case of a term male infant diagnosed with anorectal malformation and recto-prostatic urethral fistula, that underwent a laparoscopic-assisted posterior sagittal anorectoplasty in our department.

The Effectiveness of Ultrasound-Guided, Continuous, Bilateral Erector Spinae Plane Block in Perioperative Pain Management of Patients Undergoing Colorectal Surgery: A Randomized, Controlled, Double Blind, Prospective Trial.

Open and laparoscopic colorectal surgeries, while essential in the management of various colorectal pathologies, are associated with significant postoperative pain. Effective perioperative pain management strategies remain an anesthesiologic challenge. The erector spinae plane block (ESPB), a novel peripheral nerve block, has gained attention for its potential in providing analgesia for a wide variety of surgeries.

Effect of Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy with Regorafenib on IL-6 and TNF-α Levels and Peritoneal Cytology: Experimental Study in Rats with Colorectal Peritoneal Carcinomatosis.

Cytoreductive surgery (CRS), combined with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy, has significantly improved survival outcomes in patients with peritoneal carcinomatosis from colorectal cancer (CRC). Regorafenib is an oral agent administered in patients with refractory metastatic CRC. Our aim was to investigate the outcomes of intraperitoneal administration of regorafenib for intraperitoneal chemotherapy (IPEC) or/and CRS in a rat model of colorectal peritoneal metastases regarding immunology and peritoneal cytology.

The Role of Adipose Tissue Mesenchymal Stem Cells in Colonic Anastomosis Healing in Inflammatory Bowel Disease: Experimental Study in Rats.

(1) Background: A surgical operation on an inflamed bowel is, diachronically, a challenge for the surgeon, especially for patients with inflammatory bowel disease. Adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stromal cells are already in use in clinical settings for their anti-inflammatory properties. The rationale of the current study was to use AdMSCs in high-risk anastomoses to monitor if they attenuate inflammation and prevent anastomotic leak.

Osteomyelitis and Thrombosis in a Newborn with Group A Streptococcus Infection.

Neonatal osteomyelitis (OM), although exceptionally rare, has been linked to detrimental sequel, as diagnosis in the early stages is challenging and any delay in treatment can lead to disturbance in skeletal growth. In pediatric OM the most commonly grown bacteria is Staphylococcus aureus followed by group A Streptococcus (GAS). Notwithstanding, sepsis-induced coagulopathy is a well-known entity in children and adults, still sepsis-associated thrombosis is sparsely observed.

Sonographic Hip Angles in Relation to Gestational Age of Neonates. A Prospective, Cohort in the Population of Northern Greece.

Objectives: Developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) is a condition with variation among ethnicities and regions. We aimed to investigate the effect of a gestational week of birth on the sonographic acetabular hip angles of newborns.

Methods: We prospectively scanned the hips of neonates born in a single, tertiary hospital during their first week of life, using the Graf sonographic method.

Role of Phytoestrogen in Menopausal Women With Depressive Symptoms: A Consecutive Case Series Study.

Isolated Pneumopericardium: A Rare Manifestation of Penetrating Chest Trauma.

Pneumopericardium (PPC) is a clinical entity defined by the presence of air in the pericardial sac. It occurs mainly in patients who sustain blunt or penetrating chest trauma and may coexist with pneumothorax, hemothorax, rib fractures, and pulmonary contusions. Although it is a strong indicator of cardiac injury and therefore requires immediate attention for possible surgical treatment, it still remains a commonly misdiagnosed condition in the trauma bay.

Severe hypophosphataemia can be an early sign of osteopetrorickets: a case report.

Osteopetrorickets is a rare complication of autosomal recessive ("malignant") osteopetrosis. Its prompt diagnosis is essential, because early suspicion of infantile osteopetrosis enables treatment with human stem cell transplantation, depending on the gene involved. It is important to identify not only the characteristic radiological changes of rickets, but also the coexistence of increased bone density, so as not to miss this very rare entity.
