This study aims to explore the pathogenic potential of as a rare pathogen in immunocompetent individuals and to analyze how mental health status may influence susceptibility to infection. We report a case of bacteremia in a 31-year-old immunocompetent female who developed infection during an episode of severe depression. Although the patient exhibited self-harm tendencies, a thorough physical examination did not reveal any external wounds or signs of injury.

Department of Respiratory Disease, The First Affiliated Hospital, Jinzhou Medical University, Jinzhou, 121000, People's Republic of China.

Introduction: Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a progressive and life-threatening condition. Recent research has demonstrated that exosomes derived from mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) exhibit significant therapeutic potential in the treatment of PH. The composition of these exosomes is often substantially influenced by the characteristics of their parental cells.

Sinomenine (SIN), a bioactive isoquinoline alkaloid extracted from the roots and stems of Sinomenium acutum, is efficacious against various chronic pain conditions. Inhibition of microglial activation at the spinal level contributes to the analgesic effects of SIN. Microglial activation in the spinal dorsal horn is key to sensitising neuropathic pain.

MMP8-mediated vascular remodeling in pulmonary hypertension.

Biochim Biophys Acta Mol Basis Dis

February 2025

Department of Critical Care Medicine, Panzhihua Central Hospital, Panzhihua 61700, China. Electronic address:

Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a vascular remodeling disease that impacts the cardiopulmonary system. Due to the currently limited understanding of vascular remodeling, a cure for PAH remains elusive. This study highlights the critical role of the STAT1 (signal transducer and activator of transcription 1)/MMP8 (matrix metallopeptidase 8)/DRP1 (dynamin-related protein 1) axis in vascular remodeling and the pathogenesis of pulmonary hypertension.

Evaluating the causal effects between Grave's disease and diabetes mellitus: a bidirectional Mendelian randomization study.

Front Endocrinol (Lausanne)

November 2024

Emergency Department, The Second Affiliated Hospital, Jiangxi Medical College, Nanchang University, No.1 Minde Road, Nanchang, China.

Background: Graves' disease (GD) is an autoimmune disease associated with an increased incidence of other autoimmune diseases. To investigate the causality between GD and Diabetes mellitus (DM), we designed bidirectional two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) and multivariable MR (MVMR) studies.

Methods: Single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with GD, thyroid peroxidase (TPO), thyroglobulin (Tg), thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), type 1 diabetes (T1D), and type 2 diabetes (T2D) were obtained from the IEU Open GWAS and FinnGen biobank databases.

This study investigates the role of telomere-related differentially expressed genes (TRDEGs) in intervertebral disc degeneration (IVDD) through comprehensive bioinformatics analyses. Data were sourced from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) with datasets GSE245147 and GSE124272 used for initial identification and validation, respectively. The GSE245147 dataset comprised transcriptional profiles from nucleus pulposus cells of both degenerated and non-degenerated human nucleus pulposus (NP) tissues.

November 2024

School of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Southern Medical University, Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, China.

Manual therapy (MT) has been widely used in China to treat local tissue inflammation for a long time. However, there is a lack of scientific evidence for using MT in anti-inflammatory therapy, and its anti-inflammatory mechanism needs further clarification. We utilized MT to treat cardiotoxin (CTX) injury-induced skeletal muscle inflammation in C57BL6/J mice.

Background: There is limited evidence regarding the modifying effects of parents' age at childbirth on the relationship between air pollution and obesity in plateau areas. This study aimed to explore the association between particulate matter (PM) and child obesity, specifically investigating whether parents' age at childbirth could modify this relationship in the Tibetan plateau, China.

Methods: Satellite-based random forest models were used to estimate the concentrations of PM (particulate matter with aerodynamic diameters ≤ 2.

Br J Nutr

November 2024

Zhejiang Provincial Center for Cardiovascular Disease Control and Prevention, Zhejiang Hospital, Hangzhou, People's Republic of China.

Article Synopsis
  • Saccharin, a common sugar substitute, has uncertain long-term health effects, particularly on mortality related to cardiovascular disease (CVD) and cancer in diabetic and pre-diabetic, as well as overweight populations.
  • The study found that higher saccharin intake was linked to increased risks of all-cause mortality (HR: 1.41), CVD mortality (HR: 1.93), and cancer mortality (HR: 2.26) in diabetic and pre-diabetic individuals, with even higher risks in overweight individuals (HR: 7.369 for cancer mortality).
  • Substituting saccharin with total sugar or aspartame significantly lowered mortality rates, suggesting that reducing saccharin intake could improve

Lumbar disc herniation (LDH) is a prevalent condition that severely impacts patients' quality of life and work capacity. Traditional surgical treatments like laminectomy, while effective, involve significant invasiveness and potential complications, including long-term spinal instability and recurrent symptoms. With the advancement of minimally invasive techniques, percutaneous endoscopic lumbar discectomy (PELD) has become a popular option due to its reduced trauma and faster recovery.
