Article Synopsis
  • Colubrids are a large group of snakes, with over 300 genera, previously thought to be harmless, making up about two-thirds of all snake species.
  • An 18-year-old male was bitten by Erythrolamprus bizona, a snake he mistakenly identified as a harmless species, resulting in localized swelling and pain, which later spread to his hand, with laboratory tests showing an increase in white blood cells and muscle enzymes.
  • This incident emphasizes the need for accurate identification of snakes, especially those that resemble harmless species, and raises awareness about the potential dangers of bites from snakes historically considered low-risk.

Article Synopsis
  • - Vaccinieae is a diverse group within the Ericaceae family, consisting of about 1430 species, primarily tropical, but well-known for temperate crops like blueberries and cranberries.
  • - A phylogenomic study of 210 species revealed that Vaccinieae likely originated in temperate North America around 30 million years ago, with tropical species resulting from multiple migrations from these northern ancestors.
  • - Findings indicate significant evolutionary events, including a unique ovary structure development and a major polyploid event, suggesting that Vaccinium's classification needs reevaluation due to its complex evolutionary history.

Department of Medicine, Division of Infectious Diseases and Global Medicine, College of Medicine, University of Florida, Gainesville, FL, USA; Emerging Pathogens Institute, University of Florida, Gainesville, FL, USA. Electronic address:

Trypanosoma cruzi is a protozoan parasite that causes Chagas disease in humans. Transmission of T cruzi by triatomine vectors is dependent on diverse environmental and socioeconomic factors. Climate change, which is disrupting patterns of human habitation and land use, can affect the epidemiology of Chagas disease by influencing the distribution of vector and host species.

A new bridge between studies of sexual selection and the massive literature on Caenorhabditis elegans behaviourand nervous system properties promise to provide important new insights into both fields. This paper shows that mate choice likely occurs in hermaphrodite C. elegans on the basis of stimulation from the male genital spicules, making it possible to apply the toolkit of extensive background knowledge of C.

Chemoinformatic Characterization of NAPROC-13: A Database for Natural Product C NMR Dereplication.

J Nat Prod

September 2024

DIFACQUIM Research Group, Department of Pharmacy, School of Chemistry, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, Avenida Universidad 3000, Mexico City 04510, Mexico.

Natural products (NPs) are secondary metabolites of natural origin with broad applications across various human activities, particularly the discovery of bioactive compounds. Structural elucidation of new NPs entails significant cost and effort. On the other hand, the dereplication of known compounds is crucial for the early exclusion of irrelevant compounds in contemporary pharmaceutical research.

  • - Trigeminal neuralgia (TN) is a painful condition treated through various surgical methods, including microvascular decompression (MVD) and stereotactic radiosurgery such as Gamma Knife.
  • - MVD offers substantial long-term relief but has varying recurrence rates, while GKRS provides good initial pain relief but may require repeat procedures over time.
  • - The review stresses the need for personalized treatment plans and careful patient selection to improve outcomes, as each surgical option has its own risks and effectiveness depending on the patient's specific situation.

Article Synopsis
  • Monstera deliciosa, a tropical plant popular in the U.S. for its easy care and attractive leaves, was found to have leaf lesions in Virginia due to a fungal infection.
  • The symptoms included necrotic spots with reddish-brown sporulation, consistent with the fungus Pseudocerradoa paullula, which has previously been reported in the U.S. and Japan.
  • Researchers extracted DNA from the spores and successfully sequenced specific gene regions, finding high genetic similarity to Florida samples in a genetic database.

Electronic address:

Introduction: Heart transplantation (HTx) has emerged as a pivotal intervention for end-stage heart failure, offering significant improvements in survival and quality of life. This manuscript elucidates the landscape of HTx across Latin America (LATAM) from its advent in 1968 through December 2022, shedding light on its evolution, current practices, and regional disparities.

Methods: We distributed a structured questionnaire to the national coordinators or representatives of the Interamerican Council of Heart Failure and Pulmonary Hypertension, collating responses from 20 LATAM nations.

Article Synopsis
  • - Histoplasma capsulatum is a fungal pathogen found mainly in the Mississippi and Ohio River Valleys, as well as parts of Central and South America, and can reactivate in people with weakened immune systems.
  • - A case study describes a 72-year-old man who developed a painful tongue ulcer after starting immunosuppressive treatment for arthritis, revealing a latent infection with H. capsulatum that he likely contracted years earlier during military service in Central America.
  • - This case emphasizes the need for healthcare providers to be aware of the risks of histoplasmosis in patients with potential exposure to endemic areas, particularly before starting immunosuppressive therapies.

Retrospective Analysis of Blood Biomarkers of Neurological Injury in Human Cases of Viral Infection and Bacterial Sepsis.

J Infect Dis

September 2024

Naval Medical Research Command, Biological Defense Research Directorate, Microbiology and Immunology Department; Ft. Detrick, MD, USA.

Background: Blood biomarkers of neurological injury could provide a rapid diagnosis of central nervous system (CNS) injury caused by infections. An FDA-approved assay for mild traumatic brain injury (TBI) measures glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) and ubiquitin carboxy-terminal hydrolase L1 (UCH-L1), which signal astrocyte and neuronal injury, respectively. Here, we assessed the applicability of this biomarker assay for determining infection-induced brain injury.

Monitoring of stream water quality is a key element of water resource management worldwide, but methods that are commonly used in temperate habitats may not be appropriate in humid tropical systems. We assessed the influence of four land uses on microbial water quality in 21 streams in the Panama Canal Watershed over a one-year period, using a common culture-based fecal indicator test and 16S rDNA metabarcoding. Each stream was located within one of four land uses: mature forest, secondary forest, silvopasture, and traditional cattle pasture.

Background: the gold-standard diagnostic protocol (GSDP) for COVID-19 consists of a nasopharyngeal swab (NPS) sample processed through traditional RNA extraction (TRE) and amplified with retrotranscription quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR). Multiple alternatives were developed to decrease time/cost of GSDP, including alternative clinical samples, RNA extraction methods and nucleic acid amplification. Thus, we carried out a cross comparison of various alternatives methods against GSDP and each other.

Leafcutter ants are dominant herbivores in the Neotropics and rely on a fungus (Leucoagaricus gongylophorus) to transform freshly gathered leaves into a source of nourishment rather than consuming the vegetation directly. Here we report two virus-like particles that were isolated from L. gongylophorus and observed using transmission electron microscopy.

Orchidaceae is one of the most prominent flowering plant families, with many species exhibiting highly specialized reproductive and ecological adaptations. An estimated 10% of orchid species in the American tropics are pollinated by scent-collecting male euglossine bees; however, to date, there are no published genomes of species within this pollination syndrome. In this study, we present the first draft genome of an epiphytic orchid from the genus Gongora, a representative of the male euglossine bee-pollinated subtribe Stanhopeinae.
