Introduction: There is a consensus that adolescents' participation in organized leisure-time activities (OLTAs) is pro-developmental and beneficial for youth mental health. While enjoyment in OLTA is commonly regarded as positive, the role of obligation in the context of adolescents' OLTA has been scarcely researched. The present study investigated how these theoretically contradictory experiences (enjoyment and/or obligation) in OLTA participation relate to adolescents' wellbeing and incidence of psychological complaints accounting for their possible co-occurrence.

Article Synopsis
  • Children with congenital solitary functioning kidneys (SFK) face kidney damage risks, especially more so in unilateral kidney agenesis (UKA) than in unilateral multicystic dysplastic kidney (UMCDK).
  • In a study of 160 children, it was found that while kidney damage indicators like reduced glomerular filtration rate (GFR), hypertension, and proteinuria were present, UKA patients had a higher occurrence of reduced GFR compared to UMCDK patients.
  • Overall, one third of the children displayed mild SFK damage, indicating the need for careful monitoring, especially for those diagnosed with UKA.

A series of nine 2,3-disubstituted-quinazolin-4(3)-one derived Schiff bases and their three Cu(II) complexes was prepared and tested for their antimicrobial activities against reference strains ATCC 29213 and ATCC 29212 and resistant clinical isolates of methicillin-resistant (MRSA) and vancomycin-resistant (VRE). All the substances were tested against HRa ATCC 25177, DSM 44162 and ATCC 700084. While anti-enterococcal and antimycobacterial activities were insignificant, 3-[()-(2-hydroxy-5-nitrobenzylidene)amino]-2-(2-hydroxy-5-nitrophenyl)-2,3-dihydroquinazolin-4(1)-one () and its Cu(II) complex () demonstrated bacteriostatic antistaphylococcal activity.

Inflammation is a mediator of a number of chronic pathologies. We synthesized the diethyl (9Z,12Z)-octadeca-9,12-dien-1-ylphosphonate, called NKS3, which decreased lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced mRNA upregulation of proinflammatory cytokines (IL-1β, IL-6 and TNF-α) not only in primary intraperitoneal and lung alveolar macrophages, but also in freshly isolated mice lung slices. The in-silico studies suggested that NKS3, being CD36 agonist, will bind to GPR120.

Department of Clinical Microbiology and ATB Centre, Institute of Medical Biochemistry and Laboratory Diagnostic, First Faculty of Medicine, Charles University and General University Hospital, Ke Karlovu 2, Prague, 12808, Czech Republic.

Article Synopsis
  • This study looked at how well certain bacteria can be treated with antibiotics in patients from ICU between 2017 and 2021.
  • Half of the bacteria tested had difficult-to-treat resistance (DTR), meaning they didn’t respond to many antibiotics.
  • It shows that new antibiotics still might not work perfectly against these tough bacteria, so doctors need to keep checking how well they work to make sure patients get the right treatment.

Translational Ageing and Neuroscience Program, Centre for Translational Medicine, International Clinical Research Centre, St. Anne's University Hospital, Brno, Czech Republic.

Aim: Astrocytes respond to stressors by acquiring a reactive state characterized by changes in their morphology and function. Molecules underlying reactive astrogliosis, however, remain largely unknown. Given that several studies observed increase in the Amyloid Precursor Protein (APP) in reactive astrocytes, we here test whether APP plays a role in reactive astrogliosis.
