The effect of nintedanib on lung functions and survival in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis: real-life analysis of the Czech EMPIRE registry.

Introduction: The antifibrotic drug nintedanib is used for the treatment of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). We analysed the effect of nintedanib on antifibrotic treatment outcome in real-world cohorts of Czech EMPIRE registry.

Patients/methods: Data of 611 Czech IPF subjects, 430 (70%) treated with nintedanib (NIN group), 181 (30%) with no-antifibrotic treatment (NAF group) were analysed.

MXenes are a class of 2D nanomaterials with exceptional tailor-made properties such as mechano-ceramic nature, rich chemistry, and hydrophilicity, to name a few. Habitat overlap has been widely investigated for specialist species but neglected for generalists living in urban settings. Many corvid species are generalists and are adapted to urban areas.

A new computational tool for interpreting the infrared spectra of molecular complexes.

The popularity of infrared (IR) spectroscopy is due to its high interpretive power. This study presents a new computational tool for analyzing the IR spectra of molecular complexes in terms of intermolecular interaction energy components. In particular, the proposed scheme enables associating the changes in the IR spectra occurring upon complex formation with individual types of intermolecular interactions (electrostatic, exchange, induction, and dispersion), thus providing a completely new insight into the relations between the spectral features and the nature of interactions in molecular complexes.

Cyclometalated Benzimidazole Osmium(II) Complexes with Antiproliferative Activity in Cancer Cells Disrupt Calcium Homeostasis.

We present the synthesis and characterization of six new heteroleptic osmium(II) complexes of the type [Os(C^N)(N^N)]OTf (N^N = 2,2'-bipyridine and dipyrido[3,2-:2',3'-]quinoxaline; C^N = deprotonated methyl 1-butyl-2aryl-benzimidazolecarboxylate) with varying substituents in the R3 position of the phenyl ring of the cyclometalating C^N ligand. The new compounds are highly kinetically inert and absorb a full-wavelength range of visible light. An investigation of the antiproliferative activity of the new compounds has been performed using a panel of human cancer and noncancerous 2D cell monolayer cultures under dark conditions and green light irradiation.

Vitamin D Supplementation: Comparison of 1000 IU and 2000 IU Dose in Healthy Individuals.

Background: Scientific studies point to a significant global vitamin D deficiency. The recommended dose of vitamin D for the adult population in Central Europe is 800-2000 IU/day. The aim of our study was to determine whether doses of 1000 IU or 2000 IU of vitamin D are adequate to achieve the sufficiency reference values of [25(OH)D].

Challenges of Colistin Use in ICU and Therapeutic Drug Monitoring: A Literature Review.

The emerging resistance of Gram-negative bacteria is a growing problem worldwide. Together with the financial cost, limited efficacy, and local unavailability of newer antibiotics or their combinations, it has led to the reintroduction of colistin as a therapeutic alternative. Despite its protracted development and availability on the market, there is now a complex maze of questions surrounding colistin with a more or less straightforward relationship to its safety and efficacy.

B cell targeted therapies in inflammatory autoimmune disease of the central nervous system.

Cumulative evidence along several lines indicates that B cells play an important role in the pathological course of multiple sclerosis (MS), neuromyelitisoptica spectrum disorders (NMOSD) and related CNS diseases. This has prompted extensive research in exploring the utility of targeting B cells to contain disease activity in these disorders. In this review, we first recapitulate the development of B cells from their origin in the bone marrow to their migration to the periphery, including the expression of therapy-relevant surface immunoglobulin isotypes.

Ethical reflection in cognitive behavioral therapy and supervision: Theory and practice.

Ethical reflection is a process that comes from the deeper attitudes and values of the therapist and supervisor. The capability to recognize one's perspectives and ethical dimensions and how they affect own practice is one of the crucial tasks of a responsible therapist. Attitudes and values of an individual or a group may significantly influence the therapeutic process and a choice of strategies and behaviour towards the patient, often working at an unconscious, unreflected levels.

Effects of light and noise pollution on avian communities of European cities are correlated with the species' diet.

Urbanization affects avian community composition in European cities, increasing biotic homogenization. Anthropic pollution (such as light at night and noise) is among the most important drivers shaping bird use in urban areas, where bird species are mainly attracted by urban greenery. In this study, we collected data on 127 breeding bird species at 1349 point counts distributed along a gradient of urbanization in fourteen different European cities.

Acidic graphene organocatalyst for the superior transformation of wastes into high-added-value chemicals.

Our dependence on finite fossil fuels and the insecure energy supply chains have stimulated intensive research for sustainable technologies. Upcycling glycerol, produced from biomass fermentation and as a biodiesel formation byproduct, can substantially contribute in circular carbon economy. Here, we report glycerol's solvent-free and room-temperature conversion to high-added-value chemicals via a reusable graphene catalyst (G-ASA), functionalized with a natural amino acid (taurine).

The Allele Catalog Tool: a web-based interactive tool for allele discovery and analysis.

Background: The advancement of sequencing technologies today has made a plethora of whole-genome re-sequenced (WGRS) data publicly available. However, research utilizing the WGRS data without further configuration is nearly impossible. To solve this problem, our research group has developed an interactive Allele Catalog Tool to enable researchers to explore the coding region allelic variation present in over 1,000 re-sequenced accessions each for soybean, Arabidopsis, and maize.

Self-assessed competence of final-year nursing students.

Aim: To examine the overall level of self-assessed competence of final-year nursing 'bachelors' degree students in the Czech Republic. In addition, the study aimed at the factors associated with the students' level of competence.

Tauopathies are a group of neurodegenerative diseases categorised into three types, 3R, 4R, or 3R+4R (mixed) tauopathies, based on the tau isoforms that make up the aberrant filaments. It is supposed that all six tau isoforms share functional characteristics. However, differences in the neuropathological features associated with different tauopathies offer the possibility that disease progression and tau accumulation may vary depending on the isoform composition.

Recent Advances in Methods for Circulating Tumor Cell Detection.

Circulating tumor cells (CTCs) are released from primary tumors and transported through the body via blood or lymphatic vessels before settling to form micrometastases under suitable conditions. Accordingly, several studies have identified CTCs as a negative prognostic factor for survival in many types of cancer. CTCs also reflect the current heterogeneity and genetic and biological state of tumors; so, their study can provide valuable insights into tumor progression, cell senescence, and cancer dormancy.

Prevalence of Burnout in Healthcare Workers of Tertiary-Care Hospitals during the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Cross-Sectional Survey from Two Central European Countries.

COVID-19 has led to an unprecedented strain on healthcare workers (HCWs). This study aimed to determine the prevalence of burnout in hospital employees during a prolonged pandemic-induced burden on healthcare systems. An online survey among employees of a Czech and Slovak university hospital was conducted between November 2021 and January 2022, approximately when the incidence rates peaked in both countries.

Emulsion-Based Coatings for Preservation of Meat and Related Products.

One of the biggest challenges faced by the meat industry is maintaining the freshness of meat while extending its shelf life. Advanced packaging systems and food preservation techniques are highly beneficial in this regard. However, the energy crisis and environmental pollution demand an economically feasible and environmentally sustainable preservation method.

TiO/g-CN/SOH(IL): Unique Usage of Ionic Liquid-Based Sulfonic Acid as an Efficient Photocatalyst for Visible-Light-Driven Preparation of 5-HMF from Cellulose and Glucose.

Upgrading of biomass wastes to value-added materials has been incessantly pursued worldwide with diverse applications, especially deploying photocatalytic composites encompassing metal oxides with acidic and carbon compounds. Herein, the fabrication of a morphologically unique acidic catalyst encompassing a two-dimensional (2D) TiO/g-CN heterojunction feature is described for the generation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF), which exploits the acidic/ionic liquid (IL) bifunctional photocatalysis under visible light. The structural integrity of the synthesized TiO/g-CN/SOH(IL) was corroborated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy-energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDX-EDS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), UV-vis, Tauc plots, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller-Barrett-Joyner-Halenda (BET-BJH) analyses.

Proteome Mapping of Cervical Mucus and Its Potential as a Source of Biomarkers in Female Tract Disorders.

Cervical mucus (CM) is a viscous fluid that is produced by the cervical glands and functions as a uterine cervix plug. Its viscosity decreases during ovulation, providing a window for non-invasive sampling. This study focuses on proteomic characterization of CM to evaluate its potential as a non-invasively acquired source of biomarkers and in understanding of molecular (patho)physiology of the female genital tract.

AccuCalc: A Python Package for Accuracy Calculation in GWAS.

The genome-wide association study (GWAS) is a popular genomic approach that identifies genomic regions associated with a phenotype and, thus, aims to discover causative mutations (CM) in the genes underlying the phenotype. However, GWAS discoveries are limited by many factors and typically identify associated genomic regions without the further ability to compare the viability of candidate genes and actual CMs. Therefore, the current methodology is limited to CM identification.

Modernization, collectivism, and gender equality predict love experiences in 45 countries.

Recent cross-cultural and neuro-hormonal investigations have suggested that love is a near universal phenomenon that has a biological background. Therefore, the remaining important question is not whether love exists worldwide but which cultural, social, or environmental factors influence experiences and expressions of love. In the present study, we explored whether countries' modernization indexes are related to love experiences measured by three subscales (passion, intimacy, commitment) of the Triangular Love Scale.
