Metastases of the articular process, temporomandibular joint (TMJ), are rare findings. Their frequency is around 5% of patients with metastatic involvement of the mandible. The most common primary tumor is adenocarcinoma of the lung in women and adenocarcinoma of the prostate in men.

Evaluating the need for standardised disease manifestation categories in patients infected with the tick-borne encephalitis virus: A Delphi panel.

Categorization systems for tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) infection lack consistency in classifying disease severity. To evaluate the need for a standard, consensus-based categorisation system for TBEV infection across subtypes, we gathered an expert panel of clinicians and scientists with diverse expertise in TBEV infection. Consensus was sought using the Delphi technique, which consisted of 2 web-based survey questionnaires and a final, virtual, consensus-building exercise.

Oral decitabine/cedazuridine versus intravenous decitabine for acute myeloid leukaemia: A randomised, crossover, registration, pharmacokinetics study.

This study compared decitabine exposure when administered IV (DEC-IV) at a dose of 20 mg/m for 5-days with orally administered decitabine with cedazuridine (DEC-C), as well as the clinical efficacy and safety of DEC-C in patients with acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) who were ineligible for intensive induction chemotherapy. In all, 89 patients were randomised 1:1 to DEC-IV or oral DEC-C (days 1-5 in a 28-day treatment cycle), followed by 5 days of the other formulation in the next treatment cycle. All patients received oral DEC-C for subsequent treatment cycles until treatment discontinuation.

Evaluation of Cytotoxicity of the Dental Materials TheraCal LC, TheraCal PT, ApaCal ART and Biodentine Used in Vital Pulp Therapy: In Vitro Study.

(1) Background: The aim of this study was to compare the cytotoxicity of selected resin-modified materials used in direct contact with the dental pulp (TheraCal LC, TheraCal PT, and ApaCal ART) with calcium silicate cement (Biodentine). (2) Methods: The mouse fibroblast Balb/3T3 cell line and the extracts of tested materials in four concentrations were used for the testing. An MTT assay was performed in three independent experiments with six replicates for each concentration of tested material.

Simple, fast, cost-efficient, reliable, and highly automated DNA content analysis of cells in adherent cultures.

The most commonly used flow cytometric (FCM) analysis of cellular DNA content relies on ethanol fixation followed by RNA digestion and propidium iodide (PI) intercalation into double-stranded DNA. This is a laborious and time-consuming procedure that is subject to systematic errors due to centrifugation and washing steps associated with sample preparation. It can adversely affect the reliability of the results.

Treatment and Prognosis of Male Breast Cancer: A Multicentric, Retrospective Study Over 11 Years in the Czech Republic.

Purpose: Male breast cancer (MBC) is a rare, but increasingly common disease, and lacks prospective studies. Collaborative efforts are needed to understand and address MBC, including its prognosis, in different countries.

Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the clinical, histopathological, and molecular-genetic characteristics, treatments, and survival outcomes of MBC diagnosed between 2007 and 2017 in the Czech Republic.

The difficult PICC insertion is associated with the significant increase of complications in 1 month follow-up.

Background: PICC is routinely inserted with assistance of ultrasonography and/or ECG navigation (RI- routine insertion). Only in a minority of patients the insertion of a PICC is difficult and fluoroscopic visualization with introduction of special guidewire is necessary for the success of the procedure (DI-difficult insertion). The aim of the study was to evaluate whether DI can be predicted and associated with a risk of complications during follow-up.

Disposition of levobupivacaine during intraoperative continuous caudal epidural analgesia in a preterm neonate.

Background: Continuous caudal epidural analgesia used intraoperatively in children is an effective and safe technique. However, in preterm neonates, developmental factors may significantly affect levobupivacaine disposition, leading to variable pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, and potential large-variable systemic toxicity of local anesthetics.

Objective: To our knowledge, this is the first case report describing the disposition of levobupivacaine used for intraoperative caudal epidural analgesia in a preterm neonate treated for the postoperative pain profile.

Levodopa may modulate specific speech impairment in Parkinson's disease: an fMRI study.

Hypokinetic dysarthria (HD) is a difficult-to-treat symptom affecting quality of life in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). Levodopa may partially alleviate some symptoms of HD in PD, but the neural correlates of these effects are not fully understood. The aim of our study was to identify neural mechanisms by which levodopa affects articulation and prosody in patients with PD.

Surface Modification of Artificial Implants by Hybrid Nanolayers: Antimicrobial Surface Finishing and Strength Tests.

Introduction: The aim of this work was the evaluation of surface modification in surgery of normally used hernia implants and thus improving their antimicrobial properties. The modification consisted of applying hybrid nanolayers with immobilized antiseptic substances (metal cations of Ag, Cu, and Zn) by sol-gel method which ensures prolonged effect of these substances and thus enables a greater resistance of the implant towards infection. In this work, attention is drawn to the issue of applying hybrid nanolayers, activation of mesh surfaces by physical plasma modification or ultraviolet C (UV C) radiation, and influence of these modifications on the mechanical properties of the final meshes.

Discrimination of resected glioma tissues using surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy and Au@ZrO plasmonic nanosensor.

Gliomas present one of the most prevalent malignant tumors related to the central nervous system. Surgical extraction is still a preferred route for glioma treatment. Nonetheless, neurosurgeons still have a considerable challenge to detect actual margins of the targeted glioma intraoperatively and correctly because of its great natural infiltration.

Mitochondrially targeted tamoxifen as anticancer therapy: case series of patients with renal cell carcinoma treated in a phase I/Ib clinical trial.

Mitochondrially targeted anticancer drugs (mitocans) that disrupt the energy-producing systems of cancer are emerging as new potential therapeutics. Mitochondrially targeted tamoxifen (MitoTam), an inhibitor of mitochondrial respiration respiratory complex I, is a first-in-class mitocan that was tested in the phase I/Ib MitoTam-01 trial of patients with metastatic cancer. MitoTam exhibited a manageable safety profile and efficacy; among 37% (14/38) of responders, the efficacy was greatest in patients with metastatic renal cell carcinoma (RCC) with a clinical benefit rate of 83% (5/6) of patients.

Early and late infarct growth rate in ischemic stroke patients after successful endovascular treatment in early time window: correlation of imaging and clinical factors with clinical outcome.

Background: The prospective study assessed infarct growth rate (IGR) in acute ischemic stroke (AIS) with large vessel occlusion (LVO) after recanalization in early time window. Early IGR (EIGR) and late IGR (LIGR) were correlated with imaging and clinical data; we searched for outcome predictors.

Background And Aim: Gene defects contribute to the aetiology of intrahepatic cholestasis. We aimed to explore the outcome of whole-exome sequencing (WES) in a cohort of 51 patients with this diagnosis.

Patients And Methods: Both paediatric (n = 33) and adult (n = 18) patients with cholestatic liver disease of unknown aetiology were eligible.

The selection of the suitable long peripheral catheter in DIVA patients: The significance of ultrasonography.

Background: There are several types of LPC (long peripheral catheters) that vary in length, size, insertion method, and cost. The aim of the study was to evaluate whether ultrasonography can be useful for the selection of the suitable LPC in DIVA (difficult intravenous access) patients.

Methods: Based on the ultrasonographic examination, a long peripheral catheter was selected.

Mitochondrially targeted tamoxifen in patients with metastatic solid tumours: an open-label, phase I/Ib single-centre trial.

Background: Mitochondria present an emerging target for cancer treatment. We have investigated the effect of mitochondrially targeted tamoxifen (MitoTam), a first-in-class anti-cancer agent, in patients with solid metastatic tumours.

Methods: MitoTam was tested in an open-label, single-centre (Department of Oncology, General Faculty Hospital, Charles University, Czech Republic), phase I/Ib trial in metastatic patients with various malignancies and terminated oncological therapies.

Real-world evidence of efficacy and safety of pomalidomide and dexamethasone in relapsed/refractory multiple myeloma patients: Czech registry data.

We assessed the outcomes of pomalidomide and dexamethasone treatment in relapsed/refractory multiple myeloma (RRMM) patients with ≥1 prior line of therapy. We analyzed the data of all RRMM patients treated with pomalidomide and dexamethasone at nine Czech centers between 2013 and 2018. The source of the data was the Registry of Monoclonal Gammopathies of the Czech Republic.

Expansions of tumor-reactive Vdelta1 gamma-delta T cells in newly diagnosed patients with chronic myeloid leukemia.

Recent studies have underscored the importance of gamma-delta (γδ) T cells in mediating potent MHC-unrestricted cytotoxicity in numerous malignancies. Here, we analyzed Vδ1 and Vδ2 γδ T cell subsets in newly diagnosed chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) patients (n = 40) who had initiated tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) therapy including imatinib (n = 22), nilotinib (n = 14) and dasatinib (n = 4). Patient peripheral blood samples were analyzed at diagnosis and monitored prospectively at 3, 6, 12 and 18 months post-TKI.

Ixazomib, Lenalidomide and Dexamethasone in Relapsed and Refractory Multiple Myeloma in Routine Clinical Practice: Extended Follow-Up Analysis and the Results of Subsequent Therapy.

Background: We confirmed the benefit of addition of ixazomib to lenalidomide and dexamethasone in patients with relapsed and refractory multiple myeloma (RRMM) in unselected real-world population. We report the final analysis for overall survival (OS), second progression free survival (PFS-2), and the subanalysis of the outcomes in lenalidomide (LEN) pretreated and LEN refractory patients.

Methods: We assessed 344 patients with RRMM, treated with IRD (N  =  127) or RD (N  = 217).

Acute myeloid leukemia with variant t(8;10;21).

The t(8;21)(q22;q22) is one of the most common chromosomal abnormalities in acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Approximately 3-4% of AML cases are associated with additional chromosomal abnormalities. Their impact on the prognosis of the disease remains to be established.

In essential hypertension, a change in the renal resistive index is associated with a change in the ratio of 24-hour diastolic to systolic blood pressure.

An increase in the renal resistive index (RRI) in patients with essential hypertension (EH) predicts deterioration in renal function. In patients with EH, changes in hemodynamic parameters significantly affect the RRI. This study aimed to define changes in Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring (ABPM) parameters that are significantly associated with a change in RRI in patients with EH.

Clinical value of ALK and CD30 expression in mature systemic T cell lymphomas: analysis from the Czech Lymphoma Study Group database (NIHIL).

Mature T cell lymphomas (MTCLs) have worse prognosis, and in contrast to B cell lymphomas, there is no universal marker like CD20 with exception of ALK and CD30, which are present in proportion of MTCL only. Up to now, ALK is traditionally associated with good prognosis in ALCLs, and there are some evidences that CD30-positive T cell or B cell lymphomas have better prognosis. In our retrospective, population-based analysis, we analyzed the real clinical value of ALK and CD30 in the most frequent MTCL subtypes.

Neuropeptide Y as a risk factor for cardiorenal disease and cognitive dysfunction in chronic kidney disease: translational opportunities and challenges.

Neuropeptide Y (NPY) is a 36-amino-acid peptide member of a family also including peptide YY and pancreatic polypeptide, which are all ligands to Gi/Go coupled receptors. NPY regulates several fundamental biologic functions including appetite/satiety, sex and reproduction, learning and memory, cardiovascular and renal function and immune functions. The mesenteric circulation is a major source of NPY in the blood in man and this peptide is considered a key regulator of gut-brain cross talk.
