After the control policies of the COVID-19 epidemic were lifted in China from December 5th, 2022, there was an increase in the demand for hemodialysis and continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) at our center, and patients experienced hypercoagulable blood states more frequently. This study aimed to investigate the effect of COVID-19 on extracorporeal coagulation during CRRT. All CRRT records were gathered from the Hemodialysis Center at our hospital from December 5th, 2022 to February 4th, 2023, and analyzed the incidence and risk factors associated with extracorporeal coagulation.

Coincidence of HCV and chronic kidney disease-a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BMC Public Health

October 2024

Division of Molecular Virology, Center of Excellence in Molecular Biology, University of the Punjab, Lahore, Pakistan.

Background: There are reported studies of Hepatitis C and chronic kidney disease association. However, how this liver virus infection affects the general population's susceptibility to the onset of the kidney disease is still unknown.

Methods: To determine if a positive anti-HCV serologic status is linked to a greater incidence of chronic kidney disease in the general adult population, a systematic evaluation of the published medical literature since 2015 was conducted.

Article Synopsis
  • Urinoma formation is a rare complication that can occur after extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL), especially when combined with a condition called steinstrasse, complicating treatment in obstructive uropathy.
  • Urinoma refers to a collection of urine outside the kidney's collecting system, usually in the retroperitoneal or perirenal space, and timely diagnosis and treatment are crucial to avoid further complications.
  • A case report details a patient who experienced both urinoma and steinstrasse following right-side ESWL treatment for kidney stones, ultimately requiring a nephrostomy tube, trans-ureteral lithotripsy, and percutaneous nephrolithotomy for management.

  • The study classifies membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis (MPGN) into two types: immune complex-mediated and complement-mediated, based on immunofluorescence results, using data from a 20-year period at a major medical institution in Pakistan.
  • Out of 213 patients, the majority (76.5%) were found to have immune complex-mediated MPGN, with both groups showing similar demographics and clinical presentations, but differing treatment outcomes.
  • Immune complex-mediated MPGN had better remission rates and renal survival compared to complement-mediated MPGN, which had higher progression to end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) and greater overall mortality.

Patients critically afflicted with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) often need intensive care unit (ICU) admission, despite comprehensive vaccination campaigns. The challenges faced by healthcare systems in low-middle-income countries, including limited infrastructure and resources, play a pivotal role in shaping the outcomes for these patients. This study aimed to meticulously compare outcomes between COVID-19 vaccinated and nonvaccinated patients admitted to the ICU.

  • The study investigated the effectiveness and safety of rituximab for treating childhood steroid-resistant nephrotic syndrome (SRNS) across 28 pediatric nephrology centers globally.
  • Researchers found that children with a longer history of calcineurin inhibitors (CNIs) treatment before rituximab had lower remission rates compared to those with shorter treatment periods.
  • Overall, rituximab showed enhanced remission rates in a portion of SRNS patients, was mostly safe, and achieving complete remission was linked to better kidney survival outcomes.

Department of Basic Veterinary Medicine, College of Veterinary Medicine, Northwest A&F University, Yangling, Shaanxi Province, 712100, China. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • - Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) is a harmful mycotoxin affecting poultry health, particularly causing issues like reduced feed intake and weight gain in broiler chicks, which leads to liver and kidney damage.
  • - The study investigates the protective effects of bovine lactoferrin (bLF) against AFB1 toxicity, showing that bLF helped maintain normal liver and kidney function by regulating harmful biomarkers and reducing oxidative stress.
  • - BLF supplementation normalized gene expressions related to apoptosis and antioxidant defense pathways that were disrupted by AFB1 exposure, suggesting it could be a beneficial dietary addition for poultry to combat AFB1-induced damage.
