Background: Cytokine release syndrome (CRS) plays a pivotal role in the pathophysiology and progression of Coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19). Therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE) by removing the pathogenic cytokines is hypothesized to dampen CRS.

Objective: To evaluate the outcomes of the patients with COVID-19 having CRS being treated with TPE compared to controls on the standard of care.

Pediatric Liver Transplantation for Alagille Syndrome: Anesthetic Evaluation and Perioperative Management.

Ann Transplant

October 2020

Division of Liver Transplantation, Department of General Surgery, Beijing Friendship Hospital, Capital Medical University, Beijing, China (mainland).

BACKGROUND Alagille syndrome (AGS) is an autosomal dominant hereditary disorder characterized by identifiable abnormalities in the liver, heart, face, skeleton, and eyes. Recently, liver transplantation (LT) has been proposed as a therapeutic strategy for patients with AGS complicated by end-stage liver disease, but clinical experience in performing anesthesia in LT for AGS is still scarce. We aimed to summarize our preliminary experience in the anesthetic management of LT for AGS in this study.

Background: Patients undergoing haemodialysis are at increased risk for acquiring infections like hepatitis B virus and hepatitis C virus. This is due to their underlying impaired cellular immunity and exposure to contaminated equipment, frequent blood transfusions, hospitalization and surgery. This study was conducted to determine the frequency of Hepatitis B and C in patients undergoing haemodialysis in tertiary care hospitals.

Article Synopsis
  • Malnutrition significantly impacts morbidity and mortality in patients with end-stage renal disease undergoing maintenance haemodialysis, and can be identified using straightforward assessment techniques.
  • In a study of 116 adult haemodialysis patients, 25.9% were found to be malnourished, with serum albumin levels showing a strong correlation with both haemoglobin and phosphate levels, but not with body mass index.
  • Assessments using the Mini Nutritional Assessment Questionnaire and Council on Nutrition Appetite Questionnaire revealed that a majority of patients were either malnourished or at risk of malnutrition, highlighting a critical need for effective nutritional screening and intervention.

  • The study aimed to compare the performance and agreement of glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) values measured by different certified analyzers.
  • Conducted at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology with 100 patients, the study used three methods: turbidimetric inhibitory immunoassay (TINIA), electrophoresis, and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC).
  • Results showed that the HbA1c values from all three methods were very similar and displayed strong correlations, suggesting they can be used interchangeably in clinical settings.

  • * A study was conducted on dialysis patients at a single hospital to develop a new technique for placing tunnelled cuffed catheters (TCC) without fluoroscopic guidance, using anatomical landmarks and ultrasound measurements instead.
  • * Out of 209 catheters placed, there was a high success rate of 97.1%, especially in the right internal jugular vein, demonstrating that the new method is both safe and effective in resource-limited settings.
