Introduction: Many youth with pain lack access to pediatric pain expertise. There is a critical shortage of pediatric pain physicians, due partly to a paucity of training programs in Pediatric Pain Medicine. Pain fellowships are Anesthesiology-based and there is no pathway to fellowship training or Pain Medicine board certification for pediatricians.

Obesity in adolescence is increasing in frequency and is associated with elevated proinflammatory cytokines and chronic pain in a sex-dependent manner. Dietary probiotics may mitigate these detrimental effects of obesity. Using a Long-Evans adolescent and adult rat model of overweight (high-fat diet (HFD) - 45% kcal from fat from weaning), we determined the effect of a single-strain dietary probiotic [ 299v (Lp299v) from weaning] on the theoretically increased neuropathic injury-induced pain phenotype and inflammatory cytokines.

ASPMN continues to support the use of AACA to provide timely and effective pain management while promoting equitable care for vulnerable patient populations who are unable to use PCA. ASPMN does not support the use of "PCA by Proxy" in which unauthorized individuals activate PCA for a patient.

Freiberg's disease is a rare disorder affecting the distal metatarsal bones. With no quantitative estimate of its prevalence, the exact pathophysiology of Freiberg's disease is not clearly recognized. However, micro-trauma, repetitive injury, and vascular insufficiency have been implicated the most as predisposing factors for the condition.

Stress is a commonly reported issue in pediatric populations of chronic and acute pain. Both outpatient and inpatient settings impose time constraints, which decreases opportunities to measure and address patient stress. The aim of these studies was to evaluate the validity of the Stress Numeric Rating Scale-11 (SNRS-11) in both inpatient and outpatient settings.

Introduction: Providing quality healthcare for children includes assessing and responding to needs of their family caregivers. Three salient domains to consider are caregivers' early adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), their current levels of distress, and their resilience in coping with both prior and current stressors.
Objective: Determine acceptability of assessing caregiver ACEs, current distress, and resilience in pediatric subspecialty care settings.

Adolescent obesity augments and impedes the treatment of chronic pain. This is associated with increased systemic inflammation and is more prominent in females. In addition, pain and obesity each independently affect the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis.

Background: Chronic pain in adolescence is associated with diminished outcomes, lower socioeconomic status in later life, and decreased family well-being. Approximately one third of adolescents with chronic pain have obesity compared to the general population. In obesity, lipid signals regulate insulin sensitivity, satiety, and pain sensation.

Contrary to widely held perceptions, the problem of misuse, abuse, and diversion of prescription opioids has been the least of all the factors in recent years. Consequently, it is important to properly distinguish between the role of illicit and prescription opioids in the current opioid crisis.

However, its benefit have never been demonstrated in minimal invasive thoracotomy heart valve surgery (Mini-HVS). The purpose of the study was to determine whether intraoperative intercostal cryo nerve block in conjunction with standard of care (collectively referred to hereafter as CryoNB) provided superior analgesic efficacy in patients undergoing Mini-HVS compared to standard-of-care (SOC).

Peripheral nerve entrapments can occur anywhere in the head and body and can cause significant pain. Cancer pain can be caused by these entrapments, triggered by a variety of etiologies, including tumor invasion, surgical trauma, chemotherapy, or scarring. Knowing the cause of pain can help the physician treat the problem effectively, and will decrease unnecessary and potentially worsening surgeries and high dose opioid therapies, as well as unnecessary pain.

Although opioids are potent central acting broad-spectrum analgesics, their effectiveness is diminished by various factors pertaining to their metabolism, drug interactions, genetic issues, adverse/side effects, and potential for abuse. All these factors present potential barriers to effective analgesia requiring specific considerations in clinical practice, which include monitoring and case-based intervention.

Over the past year our attention has inevitably been on the coronavirus pandemic, the health and welfare of our families, patients, and office staffs as well as the re-opening of our dental practices. In addition, the opioid crisis continues, is very likely to worsen as a result of the pandemic and continues to be a challenge to Dentistry. National public health issues and healthcare disparities continue and have created a global concern for providing evidence-based, adequate pain management in the dental setting.

Introduction: The negative effects of chronic pain and obesity are compounded in those with both conditions. Despite this, little research has focused on the pathophysiology in pediatric samples.
Objective: To examine the effects of comorbid chronic pain and obesity on the concentration of circulating inflammatory biomarkers.

Background: Insulin resistance (IR) is a pathological condition in which cells fail to respond normally to insulin. IR has been associated with multiple conditions, including chronic pain. Fibromyalgia (FM) is one of the common generalized chronic painful conditions with an incidence rate affecting 3% to 6% of the population.

Objectives: The study of patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) behaviors has led to a greater understanding of factors that affect the pain experience. Although PCA behaviors can be influenced by cues to medication availability, no studies have examined the effects of such cues in pediatric populations.
Materials And Methods: This randomized controlled trial examined patient satisfaction with pain management, PCA behaviors, opioid consumption, and state anxiety in a sample of 125 postsurgical children and adolescents (7 to 17 y).
