Silicosis is associated with preventable but irreversible lung damage. Early quantifiable assessment of silicosis workers would promote early interventional steps to reduce health deterioration. The objectives of this study were to correlate spirometry findings and post-six-minute walk test oxygen desaturation (post-6MWT OD) in chronic simple silicosis with age, duration of silica exposure (DSE), smoking pack years (SPY), occupation, and mean pulmonary artery pressure.

Item Analysis of Single Best Response Type Multiple Choice Questions for Formative Assessment in Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

J Obstet Gynaecol India

June 2024

Department of Forensic Medicine, Ananta Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Centre, Rajasthan University of Health Sciences, Rajsamand, Rajasthan India.

Background: MCQs (multiple choice questions) can be used to assess higher-order skills and be utilised for creating a question bank.

Purpose Of Study Aim: To perform post-validation item analysis of MCQs constructed by medical faculty for formative assessment of final-year medical students and to explore the association between difficulty index ( value) and discrimination indices (DI) with distractor efficiency (DE).

Methods: An observational study was conducted involving 50 final-year MBBS students and 10 faculty members for a period of one year (October 2020 to September 2021).

Article Synopsis
  • Osteoarthrosis (OA) is a slowly progressing condition that leads to significant discomfort, and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy is being explored as an effective treatment for knee OA.
  • A year-long clinical study involved 80 patients over 50 years old with symptomatic knee OA, who received PRP injections and were assessed using VAS and WOMAC questionnaires before and after treatment.
  • Results showed significant improvements in patients' pain and function after 12 weeks, indicating that PRP therapy is a cost-effective and simple option for managing knee pain related to OA.

Background: Effective pain assessment is crucial to tailor the analgesic regimen post-operatively. Perfusion index (PI) has been reported to be a useful objective assessment tool for monitoring pain. This study aimed to explore the utility of PI in assessing postoperative pain in upper limb surgeries under supraclavicular block and its correlation with visual analogue scale (VAS) scores.

Large-vessel occlusion (LVO) stroke is a promising field for the use of AI, especially machine learning (ML) because optimal results are highly dependent on timely diagnosis, communication, and treatment. In order to better understand the current state of artificial intelligence (AI) in relation to LVO strokes, its efficacy, and potential future applications, we searched relevant literature to perform a comprehensive evaluation of the topic. The databases PubMed, Embase, and Scopus were extensively searched for this review.

Article Synopsis
  • * Endovascular thrombectomy has emerged as the gold standard for treating acute ischemic stroke with large vessel occlusion, particularly when performed within 0-6 hours of symptom onset.
  • * Recent guidelines suggest that only patients with significant cerebral artery blockage should undergo mechanical thrombectomy, with the choice of treatment potentially including tenecteplase for its advantages over alteplase.

Silicosis is a preventable occupational health hazard with potential for permanent physical disability and increased socio-economic burden. Pulmonary hypertension (PH) secondary to chronic respiratory diseases signifies poorer prognosis and transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) has proven its usefulness as a screening tool for PH diagnosis. The objectives were to determine PH prevalence in chronic simple silicosis patients through TTE screening and correlate PH prevalence with smoking status, occupation type, age and duration of silica exposure (DSE).

Background Proximal humerus fractures comprise nearly 4%-5% of all fracture types and nearly 25% of fracture humerus. These fractures are commonly seen in the elderly population (people aged 60 years or more). The best way to treat elderly people who have three- or four-part fractures of the proximal humerus is debatable, with many in favour of prosthetic humeral head replacements.

Unlabelled: Male reproductive functions are governed by hypothalamic pituitary testicular axis. If any component of this axis malfunctions, then hypogonadism will develop which is characterized by ill-defined secondary sexual features and low serum testosterone. The common patterns seen are primary and secondary testicular failure in the young; and late onset hypogonadism in the elderly.

Introduction: Narrow band imaging (NBI) video bronchoscopy provides better visualisation of submucosal vascular patterns in malignant airway lesions compared to white light bronchoscopy. This analytical cross-sectional study was aimed to look for any relationship between these NBI vascular patterns and the histologic type of lung cancer.

Material And Methods: After screening 78 patients with suspected lung cancer, 53 subjects underwent video bronchoscopy.

The majority of malarial neurological manifestations are due to plasmodium falciparum and the most dreaded is cerebral malaria. Post-malarial neurological syndrome (PMNS) is rarely reported in adults (<3%) and children (>10%) and includes a wide variety of neuro-psychiatric manifestations including the rare delayed cerebellar ataxia. We report a case of 60-year-old woman who had a prior history of fever and presented with cerebellitis.

Objective: This cross-sectional study set in a single school on the outskirts of a large city aimed to document the extent of double burden of malnutrition (coexistence of overnutrition and undernutrition) among Indian schoolchildren from lower socioeconomic groups, and to determine if mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) can be used as a proxy for body mass index (BMI).

Subjects: The total number of participants was 1444, comprising 424 girls and 1020 boys belonging to playgroups and grades 1 to 7.

Measurements: Anthropometric measurements, such as participants' MUAC, height and weight were measured using standard techniques.

A partial or complete resolution of the neoplastic lesion, either spontaneously or in the presence of therapy that is considered inadequate to exert significant influence on the growth of the neoplastic lesion, is considered a spontaneous regression. This phenomenon is extremely rare in lung neoplasms. A close follow up with imaging along with bronchoscopy and a biopsy of the lesion is essential, as they may have potential for distant spread even during radiological regression.

Congenital hypothyroidism remains one of the most common preventable causes of mental retardation among children. Screening for congenital hypothyroidism remains one of the most cost-effective tools to prevent mental retardation in the population. Umbilical cord blood thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels remain an attractive and a practical step for screening for congenital hypothyroidism.
