Topic Importance: Asthma is a common multifaceted respiratory disease with a major impact on quality of life. Despite increased insights into mechanisms underlying various asthma phenotypes/endotypes and the availability of targeted biologic treatment options, a substantial proportion of patients remains uncontrolled with risk of exacerbations, requiring systemic corticosteroids, and progressive disease. Current international guidelines advocate a personalized management approach to patients with uncontrolled severe asthma.

Chronic Rhinosinusitis with Nasal Polyps (CRSwNP) is a chronic inflammatory disease of the nose and paranasal sinus cavities that significantly affects well-being and social function, particularly in young adults and middle-aged populations. CRSwNP is a common health condition in the Western world, with an estimated prevalence of 3%. Despite worldwide evidence-based treatment guidelines such as the European Position Paper on Rhinosinusitis and Nasal Polyps (EPOS) 2020 and the European Forum for Research and Education in Allergy and Airway Diseases (EUFOREA) chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) pocket guide, a significant number of patients remain undiagnosed and/or uncontrolled with repeated oral corticosteroids (OCS) treatments and/or (multiple) endoscopic sinus surgeries (ESS).

Hypokalaemia is common in patients with cardiovascular disease. In this review, we emphasize the importance of tight potassium regulation in patients with cardiovascular disease based on findings from observational studies. To enhance the understanding, we also describe the mechanisms of potassium homeostasis maintenance, the most common causes of hypokalaemia and present strategies for monitoring and management of low potassium levels.

Extra-pair paternity rates vary markedly across avian taxa, but patterns of variation in this trait have been obscured by a paucity of data on closely related species, especially those spanning broad environmental gradients. Here we compare variation in extra-pair paternity rates among five species in the widespread swallow genus Tachycineta. Rates of extra-pair paternity vary widely in this group, ranging from 13 to 87% of nests having extra-pair young.

Oral anticoagulation in patients presenting with non-valvular atrial fibrillation and a CHA2DS2-VASc score of 1 (CHA2DS2-VASc of 2 in women) remains a challenging approach in clinical practice. Therapeutic decisions need to balance the individual benefit of reducing thromboembolic risk against the potential harm due to an increase in bleeding risk in this intermediate risk patient population. Within the current opinion statement of the European Society of Cardiology working group of cardiovascular pharmacotherapy and the European Society of Cardiology council on stroke the currently available evidence on the anti-thrombotic management in patients presenting with a CHA2DS2-VASc of 1 is summarized.

We prepared water soluble, biocompatible fluorescent turn-on pH nanosensors and characterized their behavior as a function of changes in pH. The response relies on a halochromic reaction of a spirorhodamineamide derived from the bright and highly chemically and photo-stable rhodamine 6G, encapsulated in core/nanoporous shell silica nanoparticles. The fluorescent sensors displayed a fast response in the pH range of intracellular compartments.

We have studied the photophysical and photochemical behavior of three compounds derived from 3-hydroxychromone (3-HC), capable of undergoing excited state proton transfer (ESIPT). The compounds have two substituents, located in positions 2 and 7, one on each ring of the 3-HC heterocycle. The substituent pattern shows different electron donating and acceptor features.

Upon detection of an approaching object, the crab Neohelice granulata continuously regulates the direction and speed of escape according to ongoing visual information. These visuomotor transformations are thought to be largely accounted for by a small number of motion-sensitive giant neurons projecting from the lobula (third optic neuropil) towards the supraesophageal ganglion. One of these elements, the monostratified lobula giant neuron of type 2 (MLG2), proved to be highly sensitive to looming stimuli (a 2D representation of an object approach).

Motion vision originated during the Cambrian explosion more than 500 million years ago, likely triggered by the race for earliest detection between preys and predators. To successfully evade a predator's attack a prey must react quickly and reliably, which imposes a common constrain to the implementation of escape responses among different species. Thus, neural circuits subserving fast escape responses are usually straightforward and contain giant neurons.

Intercellular interactions in the nervous system are mediated by two types of dedicated structural arrangements: electrical and chemical synapses. Several characteristics distinguish these two mechanisms of communication, such as speed, reliability and the fact that electrical synapses are, potentially, bidirectional. Given these properties, electrical synapses can subserve, in addition to synchrony, three main interrelated network functions: signal amplification, noise reduction and/or coincidence detection.

We report the Fickian diffusion coefficients in 20 ternary mixtures formed by 1,2,3,4-tetrahydronaphthalene (THN), isobutylbenzene (IBB) and n-dodecane (nC12) measured by the Taylor dispersion technique at 298.1 K and atmospheric pressure. Four diffusion coefficients of the ternary mixtures were measured along six concentration paths starting on one binary subsystem and moving toward the other one.

Enantiomerically pure pyrrolidines have been obtained by 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition of stabilized azomethine ylides and sugar enones (dihydropyranones) derived from pentoses. Thus, the S-enone (menthyl 3,4-dideoxy-(1S)-pent-3-enopyranosid-2-ulose) was prepared from D-xylose, while the R analogue was obtained from L-arabinose. The dipoles were generated in situ from α-arylimino esters of common amino acids (glycine, alanine, or phenylalanine) and aromatic aldehydes (benzaldehyde, 3-formylpyridine and 4-methoxybenzaldehyde).

Previous studies have analyzed the effects of spinal manipulation on pain sensitivity by using several sensory modalities, but to our knowledge, no studies have focused on serum biomarkers involved in the nociceptive pathway after spinal manipulation. Our objectives were to determine the immediate effect of cervical and dorsal manipulation over the production of nitric oxide and substance P, and establishing their relationship with changes in pressure pain thresholds in asymptomatic subjects. In this single-blind randomized controlled trial, 30 asymptomatic subjects (16 men) were randomly distributed into 3 groups (n = 10 per group): control, cervical and dorsal manipulation groups.

We aimed to investigate whether phylogenetic relationships by nuclear internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and phylogeographic patterns by chloroplast DNA (cpDNA) mirror an ancient evolutionary history that was not erased by glacial eras. Extant species are restricted to Patagonia and share a pollen type that was formerly widespread in all southern land masses.

Natural antioxidants protect against lead-induced damage during pregnancy and lactation in rat's pups.

The aim of this study was to add further evidence to the biochemical changes produced in lead-exposed pups and to investigate the potential role of natural antioxidants against the lead-induced damage. Pregnant Wistar rats received treatments with drinking water, divided into four groups, as follows: (1) distilled water; (2) lead (300mg/L); (3) lead+Zn (20mg/L)+vitamins A (50,000U/L), C (2g/L), E (500mg/L) and B(6) (500mg/L); and (4) vitamins+Zn solution. We found a significant decrease in haemoglobin and haematocrit values as well and an increase in haemolysis among lead-exposed pups.
