In this work, we introduce a compartmental model of ovarian follicle development all along lifespan, based on ordinary differential equations. The model predicts the changes in the follicle numbers in different maturation stages with aging. Ovarian follicles may either move forward to the next compartment (unidirectional migration) or degenerate and disappear (death).

Bradycardia is a commonly occurring condition in premature infants, often causing serious consequences and cardiovascular complications. Reliable and accurate detection of bradycardia events is pivotal for timely intervention and effective treatment. Excessive false alarms pose a critical problem in bradycardia event detection, eroding trust in machine learning (ML)-based clinical decision support tools designed for such detection.

Ferroptosis is a novel form of programmed cell death and is considered to be a druggable target for colorectal cancer (CRC) therapy. However, the role of ferroptosis in CRC and its underlying mechanism are not fully understood. In the present study we found that a protein enriched in the Golgi apparatus, Golgi phosphoprotein 3 (GOLPH3), was overexpressed in human CRC tissue and in several CRC cell lines.

Background: Chest X-rays (CXR) are essential for diagnosing a variety of conditions, but when used on new populations, model generalizability issues limit their efficacy. Generative AI, particularly denoising diffusion probabilistic models (DDPMs), offers a promising approach to generating synthetic images, enhancing dataset diversity. This study investigates the impact of synthetic data supplementation on the performance and generalizability of medical imaging research.

Background: Sarcopenia, prevalent in patients with cancer, negatively affects quality of life. However, generic tools are unable to capture the minor effects of sarcopenia on quality of life. The short-form version of the Sarcopenia Quality of Life (SF-SarQoL) questionnaire was developed as an efficient tool to assess the impact of sarcopenia on quality of life in older adults.

Passive radiative cooling (PRC) can spontaneously dissipate heat to outer space through atmospheric transparent windows, providing a promising path to meet sustainable development goals. However, achieving simultaneously high transparency, color-customizable, and thermal management of PRC anti ultraviolet (anti-UV) films remains a challenge. Herein, a simple strategy is proposed to utilize liquid crystalline polymer, with high mid-infrared emissive, forming customizable structural color film by molecular self-assembly and polymerization-induced pitch gradient, which guarantees the balance of transparency in visible spectrum and sunlight reflection, rendering anti-UV colored window for thermal management.

This work evaluated in vivo an experimental-multivalent-vaccine (EMV) based on three Porcine Respiratory Complex (PRC)-associated antigens: Porcine Circovirus Type 2 (PCV2), (Mhyop) and (Mhyor), microencapsulated with sulfated chitosan (M- ChS + PRC-antigens), postulating chitosan sulphate (ChS) as a mimetic of the heparan sulfate receptor used by these pathogens for cell invasion. The EMV was evaluated physicochemically by SEM (Scanning-Electron-Microscopy), EDS (Energy-Dispersive-Spectroscopy), Pdi (Polydispersity-Index) and zeta potential. Twenty weaned pigs, distributed in four groups, were evaluated for 12 weeks.

Malignant melanoma represents a form of skin cancer characterized by a bleak prognosis and heightened resistance to traditional therapies. Quercetin has demonstrated notable anti-carcinogenic, anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, and pharmacological effects across various cancer types. However, the intricate relationship between quercetin's anti-cancer properties and ganglioside expression in melanoma remains incompletely understood.

Genetic manipulation of animal models is a fundamental research tool in biology and medicine but is challenging in large animals. In rodents, models can be readily developed by knocking out genes in embryonic stem cells or by knocking down genes through delivery of nucleic acids. Swine are a preferred animal model for studying the cardiovascular and immune systems, but there are limited strategies for genetic manipulation.

Background: The frequency of anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) has increased up to 400% since 2011, underscoring the need to preoperatively anticipate adverse postoperative outcomes given the procedure's expanding use. Our study aims to accomplish two goals: firstly, to develop a suite of explainable machine learning (ML) models capable of predicting adverse postoperative outcomes following ACDF surgery, and secondly, to embed these models in a user-friendly web application, demonstrating their potential utility.
Methods: We utilized data from the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program database to identify patients who underwent ACDF surgery.
