Under long-standing threat of seasonal influenza outbreaks, it remains imperative to understand the drivers of influenza dynamics which can guide mitigation measures. While the role of absolute humidity and temperature is extensively studied, the possibility of ambient ozone (O) as an environmental driver of influenza has received scant attention. Here, using state-level data in the USA during 2010-2015, we examined such research hypothesis.

Aggregation is a conventional method to enhance the quantum yields (QYs) of pure organic luminophores due to the restriction of intramolecular motions (RIM). However, how to realize RIM in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is still unclear and challenging. In this work, the ligand meta-anchoring strategy is first proposed and proved to be an effective and systematic approach to restrict the intramolecular motions of MOFs for the QY improvement.

Introduction: Pheochromocytomas (PCC) and paragangliomas (PGL) (collectively PPGL) are a type of rare hypervascular neuroendocrine tumors that are very challenging to treat. This study aimed to determine the efficacy and safety of the multi-tyrosine kinase inhibitor anlotinib for the treatment of locally advanced or metastatic (LA/M) PPGL.
Methods: A total of 37 eligible patients with unresectable or progressive LA/M PPGL were enrolled.

Oral immunization can elicit an effective immune response and immune tolerance to specific antigens. When compared with the traditional injection route, delivering antigens via the gastrointestinal mucosa offers superior immune effects and compliance, as well as simplicity and convenience, making it a more optimal route for immunization. At present, various oral vaccine delivery systems exist.

Previous mass spectrometric (MS) studies demonstrated that singly charged hydration clusters of manganese ions [Mn(HO)] were, on one hand, highly reactive toward intracluster water insertion but, on the other hand, inert toward nitrous oxide activation. This contrast in reactivity has been rationalized by our present theoretical investigation for the interconversion between the pristine Mn(I) monovalent form as a monatomic ion in [Mn(HO)] and the oxidized Mn(III) trivalent form as a hydride-hydroxide in [HMnOH(HO)], as well as their reactivity toward nitrous oxide activation. Our theoretical interpretations are supported with quantum chemical calculations based on density functional theory (DFT), performed systematically for the cluster-size range of = 1 - 12.

Sweetpotato blades are rich in the functional secondary metabolite chlorogenic acid (CGA), which deepen potential for effective utilization of the blade in industry. In this study, we evaluated the type and content of CGA in the blades of 16 sweetpotato genotypes and analyzed the correlation between CGA content and antioxidant capacity. Then we isolated and characterized IbGLK1, a GARP-type transcription factor, by comparative transcriptome analysis.

Sepsis-associated encephalopathy (SAE) frequently encounters patients who are in intensive care units and ∼70% of patients with severe systemic infection. However, due to the unclear pathological mechanisms of SAE, the desease-modifying drug is still lack. Here, we aimed to explore whether the flavonoid components extracted from CCL (CCLF) seeds possess protective effects on SAE animals, and systematically evaluate the transcriptomic alteration (in the hippocampus) after CCLF treatment on SAE animals employing RNA sequencing.

Organic photovoltaic cells using Y6 non-fullerene acceptors have recently achieved high efficiency, and it was suggested to be attributed to the charge-transfer (CT) nature of the excitations in Y6 aggregates. Here, by combining electroabsorption spectroscopy measurements and electronic-structure calculations, we find that the charge-transfer character already exists in isolated Y6 molecules but is strongly increased when there is molecular aggregation. Surprisingly, it is found that the large enhanced charge transfer in clustered Y6 molecules is not due to an increase in excited-state dipole moment, Δμ, as observed in other organic systems, but due to a reduced polarizability change, Δp.

The multi-domain protein UHRF1 (ubiquitin-like, containing PHD and RING finger domains, 1) recruits DNMT1 for DNA methylation maintenance during DNA replication. Here, we show that MOF (males absent on the first) acetylates UHRF1 at K670 in the pre-RING linker region, whereas HDAC1 deacetylates UHRF1 at the same site. We also identify that K667 and K668 can also be acetylated by MOF when K670 is mutated.

Objectives: To define how dynamic changes in pre versus postoperative serum aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine transaminase (ALT) levels may impact postoperative morbidity after curative-intent resection of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).
Background: Hepatic ischemia/reperfusion can occur at the time of liver resection and may be associated with adverse outcomes after liver resection.
Methods: Patients who underwent curative resection for HCC between 2010 and 2020 were identified from an international multi-institutional database.

Neoantigens are derived from somatic mutations in the tumors but are absent in normal tissues. Emerging evidence suggests that neoantigens can stimulate tumor-specific T-cell-mediated antitumor immune responses, and therefore are potential immunotherapeutic targets. We developed ImmuneMirror as a stand-alone open-source pipeline and a web server incorporating a balanced random forest model for neoantigen prediction and prioritization.

Massive sequencing of SARS-CoV-2 genomes has urged novel methods that employ existing phylogenies to add new samples efficiently instead of de novo inference. 'TIPars' was developed for such challenge integrating parsimony analysis with pre-computed ancestral sequences. It took about 21 seconds to insert 100 SARS-CoV-2 genomes into a 100k-taxa reference tree using 1.

The bottom-up molecular science research paradigm has greatly propelled the advancement of materials science. However, some organic molecules can exhibit markedly different properties upon aggregation. Understanding the emergence of these properties and structure-property relationship has become a new research hotspot.

Objectives: Obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) are growing health concerns. Since 2005, Student Health Service (SHS) and Hong Kong Paediatric Society formulated a protocol on urine glucose screening (UGS) for early diagnosis of T2DM in students with obesity in Hong Kong. This study reviews students with T2DM captured by this screening program and compare the data with the Hong Kong Children Diabetes Registry (HKCDR) database, to see if the UGS program facilitates early diagnosis of T2DM.

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is notorious for its resistance against chemotherapy and immunotherapy due to its dense desmoplastic and immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment (TME). Traditional photodynamic therapy (PDT) was also less effective for PDAC owing to poor selectivity, insufficient penetration, and accumulation of photosensitizers in tumor sites. Here, we designed a light-responsive novel nanoplatform targeting the TME of PDAC through tumor-specific midkine nanobodies (Nbs), which could efficiently deliver semiconducting polymeric nanoparticles (NPs) to the TME of PDAC and locally produce abundant reactive oxygen species (ROS) for precise photoimmunotherapy.

Manganese oxide (MnO) is one of the most abundant metal oxides, and it is renowned for its ability to degrade various phenolic micropollutants. However, under MnO-mediated transformation, BP-3 transforms into 12 different radical-coupled transformation products (TPs) out of 15 identified TPs. These radical-coupled TPs are reported with adverse environmental impacts.

The measurement of Z boson production is presented as a method to determine the integrated luminosity of CMS data sets. The analysis uses proton-proton collision data, recorded by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC in 2017 at a center-of-mass energy of 13. Events with Z bosons decaying into a pair of muons are selected.
