Wild boars inhabit diverse climates, including frigid regions like Siberia, but their migration history and cold adaptation mechanisms into high latitudes remain poorly understood. We constructed the most comprehensive wild boar whole-genome variant dataset to date, comprising 124 samples from tropical to frigid zones, among which 47 Russian, 8 South Chinese and 3 Vietnamese wild boars were newly supplemented. We also gathered 75 high-quality RNA-seq datasets from 10 tissues of 6 wild boars from Russia and 6 from southern China.

Design of asymmetric electrolytes for aqueous zinc batteries.

Commun Chem

January 2025

Department of Materials Science and Engineering, City University of Hong Kong, 83 Tat Chee Avenue, Kowloon, Hong Kong, 999077, P. R. China.

Aqueous Zn batteries are gaining increasing research attention in the energy storage area due to their intrinsic safety, potentially low cost and environmental friendliness; however, the zinc dendrite formation, zinc corrosion, passivation and the hydrogen evolution reaction induced by water at the anode side, and materials dissolution as well as intrinsic poor reaction kinetics at cathode side in aqueous systems, seriously shorten the cycling life and decrease energy density of batteries and greatly hinder their development. Recent advancements in asymmetric electrolytes with various functions are promising to overcome such challenges for zinc batteries at the same time. It has been proved that the applications of asymmetric electrolytes show significant contributions in the field of zinc-based batteries in suppressing side reactions while maintaining electrochemical performance to satisfy both anode and cathode.

Biological materials, such as bamboo, are naturally optimized composites with exceptional mechanical properties. Inspired by such natural composites, traditional methods involve extracting nanofibers from natural sources and applying them in composite materials, which, however, often results in less ideal mechanical properties. To address this, this study develops a bottom-up nanofiber assembly strategy to create strong fiber-reinforced composite hydrogels inspired by the hierarchical assembly of bamboo.

A dynamic optimization of soil phosphorus status approach could reduce phosphorus fertilizer use by half in China.

Nat Commun

January 2025

State Key Laboratory of Nutrient Use and Management, College of Resources and Environmental Sciences, National Academy of Agriculture Green Development, China Agricultural University, 100193, Beijing, PR China.

Sustainable phosphorus (P) management is essential for ensuring crop production while avoiding environmental damage and the depletion of phosphate rock reserves. Despite local demonstration scale successes, the widespread mobilization of smallholder farmers to adopt sustainable management practices remains a challenge, primarily due to the associated high costs and complicated sampling. Here, we propose a dynamic optimization of soil P status (DOP) approach aimed at managing long-term soil P status within the range of agronomic and environmental soil P thresholds, which facilitates the precise determination of optimal P application rates without the need for frequent soil testing.

The dissemination of antibiotic resistance from environmental sources is a growing concern. Despite the widespread occurrence of antibiotic resistance transmission events, there are actually multiple obstacles in the ecosystem that restrict the flow of bacteria and genes, in particular nonnegligible biological barriers. How these ecological factors help combat the dissemination of antibiotic resistance and relevant antibiotic resistance-diminishing organisms (ARDOs) deserves further exploration.

Herein a novel and robust methodology to spiroimidazolidinones has been developed under a mild reaction. The reaction of (Z)-2-azido-3-phenylacrylic acids , aldehydes , amines , isocyanides , and isocyanides produced regioselectively spiroimidazolidinones in 71-88% yields via a sequential Ugi 4CR/Pd(0) catalyzed azide-isocyanide coupling/cyclization/rearrangement/hydroxylation reaction. Furthermore, the easily accessible starting materials, high bond-forming efficiency, and broad substituent tolerance make this strategy useful in synthetic and medicinal chemistry.

Study on the reforming performance of liquid products from biomass staged gasification based on component analysis and simulation.

Bioresour Technol

January 2025

Hubei Key Laboratory of Hydroelectric Machinery Design & Maintenance, China Three Gorges University, Yichang 443002, PR China. Electronic address:

Biomass staged gasification technology (BSGT) divides the traditional gasification into medium-temperature devolatilization (MTD) stage, high-temperature gasification (HTG) stage and high-temperature reforming (HTR) stage. The present study conducted MTD and HTG experiments on corn stalks and focused on the effect of MTD at 200-550 °C on the reforming performance of BSGT liquid products through component analysis and simulation. The results demonstrate that the MTD temperature above 350 °C could prevent the participation of phenols and oxygen in HTG and HTR stages, respectively, thereby improving the reforming performance of BSGT liquid products and the quality of BSGT syngas.

Bee venom acupuncture (BVA) offers therapeutic potential for rheumatoid arthritis (RA) but faces challenges from pain and allergies linked to live bee stings. A key hurdle is melittin (Mel), bee venom's main anti-inflammatory component, which degrades rapidly when orally ingested, leading to decreased efficacy and increased toxicity. This study proposes a solution by encapsulating melittin in liposomes to enhance stability and lessen side effects, expanding its clinical applicability.
