Litter size traits of sows are crucial for the economic benefits of the pig industry. Three phenotypic traits of 1,206 Large White (LW) pigs, that is, the total number born (TNB), number born alive (NBA), and number of healthy piglets (NHP), were recorded. We evaluated a series of genomic best linear unbiased prediction (GBLUP) models that sequentially added additive effects (model A), dominance effects (model A+D), and epistatic effects (model A+D+AA, model A+D+AA+AD, and model A+D+AA+AD+DD) using chip data and imputed whole-genome sequencing (WGS) data to estimate genetic parameters and predictive accuracy.

However, adverse events, including liver injury, kidney injury, and phlebitis, have been reported in patients with SA in recent years. In this study, we used BALB/c mice and L02 cells to evaluate the role of ferroptosis in SA-induced liver injury.

Int J Surg

January 2025

Division of Hepatobiliary and Transplantation Surgery, Department of General Surgery, Nanjing Drum Tower Hospital, The Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing University Medical School, Nanjing, China.

Introduction: Laennec's capsule serves as a critical anatomical landmark in anatomical liver resection. Despite its potential, a lack of large-scale prospective studies limits the widespread use of the Laennec approach for minimally invasive hepatectomy. This multicenter cohort study aimed to compare the outcomes of the traditional and Laennec approaches in minimally invasive anatomical hepatectomy across multiple centers in China.

Herein, we developed a silane-promoted cycloaddition of thiobenzhydrazides with carbon dioxide leading to 1,3,4-thiadiazol-2(3)-ones. This procedure involves sequential -silylation and fixation of carbon dioxide toward a hydrazine formyl intermediate, followed by intramolecular nucleophilic cyclization and aromatization. A series of functional groups are well-tolerated under this procedure.

The study focuses on the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the economy and foreign direct investments in the European Union countries. Using data envelopment analysis constant and variable returns to scale models, and the Malmquist productivity index, we measured the efficiency of economic resource utilization concerning foreign direct investments and gross domestic product. These efficiencies were assessed in 2019, before the full outbreak of COVID-19, and in 2020, when uncertainty and the consequences of the pandemic were most pronounced.

Droplets in open microfluidics: generation, manipulation, and application in cell analysis.

Lab Chip

January 2025

Department of Chemistry, Beijing Key Laboratory of Microanalytical Methods and Instrumentation, Key Laboratory of Bioorganic Phosphorus Chemistry and Chemical Biology (Ministry of Education), Tsinghua University, Beijing 100084, P. R. China.

Open droplet microfluidics is an emerging technology that generates, manipulates, and analyzes droplets in open configuration systems. Droplets function as miniaturized reactors for high-throughput analysis due to their compartmentalization and parallelization, while openness enables addressing and accessing the targeted contents. The convergence of two technologies facilitates the localization and intricate manipulation of droplets using external tools, showing great potential in large-scale chemical and biological applications, particularly in cell analysis.

An ultrasensitive angular interrogation metasurface sensor based on the TE mode surface lattice resonance.

Microsyst Nanoeng

January 2025

National Key Laboratory of Advanced Micro and Nano Manufacture Technology, Beijing, 100871, PR China.

The localized surface plasmon resonance metasurface is a research hotspot in the sensing field since it can enhance the light-matter interaction in the nanoscale, but the wavelength sensitivity is far from comparable with that of prism-coupled surface plasmon polariton (SPP). Herein, we propose and demonstrate an ultrasensitive angular interrogation sensor based on the transverse electric mode surface lattice resonance (SLR) mechanism in an all-metal metasurface. In theory, we derive the sensitivity function in detail and emphasize the refraction effect at the air-solution interface, which influences the SLR position and improves the sensitivity performance greatly in the wide-angle.

National Clinical Research Center for Hematologic Diseases, Jiangsu Institute of Hematology, the First Affiliated Hospital of Soochow University, Soochow University, Suzhou, P. R. China.

Multiple myeloma (MM), essential thrombocythemia (ET), and colorectal adenocarcinoma (CA) are three distinct diseases. The co-occurrence of MM, ET, and CA in a single patient is exceedingly rare. Our study presents a remarkable case involving a 75-year-old patient who was simultaneously diagnosed with these three diseases.

Lamivudine plus dolutegravir (3TC/DTG) and bictegravir/emtricitabine/tenofovir alafenamide (B/F/TAF) regimens are commonly used as first-line treatments for people living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) (PLWH) worldwide. There are limited comparative data on the antiviral activity and safety between these regimens in ART-naive PLWH, particularly in China, where the 3TC/DTG regimen was integrated into first-line therapy in 2021 and gained broader adoption after its inclusion in the National Health Insurance in 2022. This study aims to provide real-world evidence comparing the 3TC/DTG regimen to the B/F/TAF regimen in ART-naive PLWH in China.

Craniofacial bone defect healing in periodontitis patients with diabetes background has long been difficult due to increased blood glucose levels which cause overproduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and a low pH environment. These conditions negatively affect the function of macrophages, worsen inflammation and oxidative stress, and ultimately, hinder osteoblasts' bone repair potential. In this study, we for the first time found that ANXA1 expression in macrophages was reduced in a diabetic periodontitis environment, with the activation of the NLRP3/Caspase-1/GSDMD signaling pathway, and, eventually, increased macrophage pyroptosis.

Metformin and the risk of malignant tumors of digestive system: a mendelian randomization study.

Diabetol Metab Syndr

January 2025

Department of Radiation Oncology and Hunan Key Laboratory of Translational Radiation Oncology, The Affiliated Cancer Hospital of Xiangya School of Medicine, Central South University, HunanCancer Hospital, Changsha, China.

Background: Observational studies suggest that metformin may reduce the risk of malignant tumors of the digestive system (MTDS), but these findings are often confounded by bias and unmeasured variables. Recent meta-analyses have questioned these associations, emphasizing the need for robust causal inference.

Methods: Mendelian randomization (MR) was used to evaluate the causal relationship between metformin and MTDS.
