Abnormally fertilized embryos are often discarded during in vitro fertilization due to the fact that known chromosomal ploidy abnormalities lead to implantation failure or pregnancy loss. The objective of this study was to determine if pronuclear numeration (PN) observed at fertilization check is representative of the true ploidy status of the subsequent developing blastocyst in order to maximize the number of viable embryos available for infertility patients and increase their chances of conception. Upon successful fertilization, pronuclear numeration was noted, and zygotes were cultured to the blastocyst stage.

School of Tropical Agriculture and Forestry, Hainan University, Haikou 570100, China.

Against the backdrop of a changing global climate, the soil environment may undergo significant changes, directly affecting agricultural productivity and exacerbating global food security issues. Three different substrates were set up in this study, namely, S (high sand and low nutrient content), T (medium sand and medium nutrient content), and TT (low sand and high nutrient content). The results showed that the root/shoot ratio increased as the sand content increased (nutrient content decreased).

we evaluated regression models based on quantitative ultrasound (QUS) parameters and compared them with a vendor-provided method for calculating the ultrasound fat fraction (USFF) in metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD). We measured the attenuation coefficient (AC) and the backscatter-distribution coefficient (BSC-D) and determined the USFF during a liver ultrasound and calculated the magnetic resonance imaging proton-density fat fraction (MRI-PDFF) and steatosis grade (S0-S4) in a combined retrospective-prospective cohort. We trained multiple models using single or various QUS parameters as independent variables to forecast MRI-PDFF.

Personalised nutrition (PN) as a new endeavour emerged in the background of the human genome project with the ease to analyse genetic heterogeneity. First commercial offers with recommendations for diet and lifestyle changes, usually based on a few polymorphisms, entered markets soon after the presentation of the human genome blueprint. Although PN has seen many attempts, meanwhile, with the inclusion of other biomedical measures such as microbiome and/or continuous glucose monitoring, scientific assessments of such approaches in various settings revealed limited success.

Chagas disease is a chronic infection caused by the protozoan parasite, Trypanosoma cruzi, with limited benefits of the currently available anti-parasitic chemotherapeutic approaches to halt the progression of heart disease. Recombinant TSA-1-C4 and Tc24-C4 proteins have been developed as promising antigen candidates for therapeutic vaccines, leading to propose them in combination as a bivalent recombinant protein strategy. In this study, we evaluated the immunomodulatory effect of the combined TSA-1-C4 and Tc24-C4 recombinant proteins by in vitro assays using murine macrophages.

The SnO@BiO core-shell heterojunction structure was designed and synthesized via a hydrothermal method, and the structure and morphology of the synthesized samples were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Based on the conclusions from XRD and SEM, it can be observed that as the hydrothermal temperature increases, the content of BiO coated on the surface of SnO spheres gradually increases, and the diameter of BiO nanoparticles also increases. At a hydrothermal temperature of 160 °C, the SnO spheres are fully coated with BiO nanoparticles.

December 2024

NHC Key Laboratory of Tropical Disease Control, School of Tropical Medicine, Hainan Medical University, Haikou 571199, China.

The deep-sea ecosystem, a less-contaminated reservoir of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), has evolved antibiotic resistance for microbes to survive and utilize scarce resources. Research on the diversity and distribution of these genes in deep-sea environments is limited. Our metagenomics study employed short-read-based (SRB) and assembled-contig-based (ACB) methods to identify ARGs in deep-sea waters and sediments and assess their potential pathogenicity.

In this present study, we developed and characterized a series of supramolecular G4 hydrogels by integrating -cyclodextrin (-CD) and boronic acid linkers into a supramolecular matrix to enhance antibacterial activity against (). We systematically investigated how varying the number of free boronic acid moieties (ranging from two to six), along with guanosine and β-CD content, influences both the structural integrity and antimicrobial efficacy of these materials. Comprehensive characterization using FTIR, circular dichroism, X-ray diffraction, SEM, AFM, and rheological measurements confirmed successful synthesis and revealed that higher boronic acid content correlated with a stronger, more organized network.

Nestin is a type VI intermediate filament protein and a well-known neural stem cell marker. It is also expressed in high-grade cancer cells, forming copolymerized filaments with vimentin. We previously showed that nestin inhibits the binding of vimentin's tail domain to actin filaments (AFs) by steric hindrance through its large nestin tail domain (NTD), thereby increasing three-dimensional cytoskeleton network mobility, enhancing cell flexibility, and promoting cancer progression.
