The elderly are known to exhibit declines in postural control during standing and walking, however little is known about how the elderly react under time-critical and challenging postural situations. The purpose of this study was to examine age-related differences in reaction time (RT) and the pattern of temporal coordination between center of pressure (COP), trunk and head motion during voluntary postural sway movements. Healthy young (n=10; mean=24 years; SD=5 years) and elderly men (n=8; mean=75 years; SD=2 years) stood on a force plate with tri-axial accelerometers attached to the head and lower trunk.

The terminal sugar sialic acid (Sia) plays a pivotal role in cell-cell interaction and recognition. A prerequisite for the biosynthesis of sialoglycoconjugates is the activation of Sia to cytidine monophosphate-Sia (CMP-Sia), by CMP-Sia synthetases (CMP-Sia-syn). CMP-Sia-syn are conserved from bacteria to man, and have been found to reside in the nucleus of all vertebrate species analysed to date.

The purpose of this study was to determine the inter- and intra-examiner reliability, and stride-to-stride reliability, of an accelerometer-based gait analysis system which measured 3D accelerations of the upper and lower body during self-selected slow, preferred and fast walking speeds. Eight subjects attended two testing sessions in which accelerometers were attached to the head, neck, lower trunk, and right shank. In the initial testing session, two different examiners attached the accelerometers and performed the same testing procedures.

The purpose of the present study was to assess whether any differences existed in the upper body accelerations of young and elderly subjects during natural speed walking. Head and trunk accelerations in eight young subjects (aged 23+/-4 years) and eight healthy elderly subjects (aged 74+/-3 years) were measured during level walking on a 20 m walkway using a pair of tri-axial accelerometers. Heel contact and toe-off events were determined using a footswitch system embedded in the innersole of the right shoe.

The aim of this experiment was to compare lumbar spinal loads during individual and team lifting tasks. Ten healthy male subjects performed individual lifts with a box mass of 15, 20 and 25 kg and two-person team lifts with a box mass of 30, 40 and 50 kg from the floor to standing knuckle height. Boxes instrumented with force transducers were used to measure vertical and horizontal hand forces, whilst sagittal plane segmental kinematics were determined using a video based motion measurement system.
